HP ENVY x360 13" Laptop Cracked LCD Touch Screen & Top Cover Broken Hinge Mount Replacement (13M-AG)

In this video we have an HP ENVY x360 convertible model 13M-AG001DX laptop in the 13 inch screen size, which has two damaged parts that we need to repair. First, this ENVY x360 13 has been dropped so it has some cracks / fractures in the LCD touchscreen display panel glass in several areas. Second, it already had the classic broken hinge mount issue (screen popped out from the laptop lid) on the lower right corner of the top cover, which then shattered the LCD glass and damaged the digitizer in the lower corner when it was eventually dropped. The hinge plate problem is endemic to HP ENVY models, and a long standing HP ENVY design flaw. The way the hinge fails on the 13" models is a bit different than the larger screen models, in that is is primarily a loss of adhesion between the hinge and top cover mounting plate. But the hinge still inevitably fails and has to be repaired (re-epoxied), or replaced outright as we do here.
So this vid is a twofer, we will BOTH replace the HP logo metal lid / top cover (as well as suggest an alternative epoxy patch repair for the hinge backing plate design flaw) with a 100% identical Chinese copycat part AND we will replace the complete LCD touchscreen assembly with brand new reproduction / knockoff / clone part that is not 100% the same as HP OEM, but was the only option for this model. Thus this laptop gets a complete display panel assembly rebuild! HP does not sell these parts individually, and only thru HP resellers. The HP pricing for the complete display panel assembly is cost prohibitive for this model laptop anyway, so we are going to roll with Chinese made fake HP parts.
This video shows the HP model 13M-AG001DX laptop exactly, but should be applicable to any HP ENVY x360 laptop in the 13M-AG series (13Z-AG, 13-AG series). The parts I show also should fit any 13M-AG series laptop, as well as several other 13.3" models, check with the individual parts sellers for fitment before you buy. What matters to getting the right clone replacement part is matching up the HP part numbers on the white stickers of the original parts.

Excellent video! Thank you for all the insights, now I know what to do to fix my detached bracket before I end up breaking the glass. As I will be reusing my screen panel and cover after going with epoxy in the bracket, do you think the screen glue would still work enough to put it back together? If not, what would you recommend to use instead? I think VHB double sided tape might work, or is it too thick?

Thanks. It's uncommon to not damage the double sided OEM tape that holds the screen, but if you have it that would hold best. If not, there is a 3M tape specifically for this LCD screen reattachment purpose that you should seek out on eBay or Amazon to be thin enough. The new LCD screens already have this applied as shown in the video.

Am I right in assuming that if I just need to replace the back cover (dropped the laptop, back cover warped, screen is in perfect condition) and not the screen, that I won't need to remove all the cables for the webcam? Basically, just separate the screen from the back cover (using the spudgers and whatnot), unplug the wifi cable, remove the screws from the hinges, and swap out the back?

You'll have to do all the steps I do for the replacement back cover in this video. But the webcam isn't attached to the metal cover part no. You will have to remove and reattach WiFi antenna adhesive, hinge bracket screws, WiFi cable routing etc that I show doing. You'll need to be careful with the LCD screen adhesive since you're reusing the screen. In this video I was pretty aggressive with it since I knew the screen was going to be replaced.

I'm going to fix this myself but I have a question since my hinge broke a month ago, now when I tried to use the labtop the screen is glitching making it hard for me to type and click on what I need to do, do you recommend I need to replace the screen assembly as well as the hinged replacement? Tough to say, it could just be the connection flexing from the lack of being secure anymore. Or it could be that repeated flex from the lack of this correct hinge placement has damaged the wiring harness. If I had a customer with this complaint, I would inspect for any cracks in the screen glass first. Then I would visually inspect each of the screen wiring harnesses for chafing or similar damage. Finally I would check the connectors themselves. If I couldn't find anything, I would go with replacing the hinge(s) first and re-test.

Okay so finally I got to fixing my labtop, the ifixit tools were extremely helpful, my screen popped off super easy...but my question is where did you purchase the replacement parts?

Hi there! I've just got a laptop like this one and it had the same broken hinge mount issue, do you know if it's possible just to replace the broken display panel glass from the lcd screen? i have found some with very good prices and i haven't found anything on the internet talking about that.

Like with an Apple iPhone, the panel glass is fused with the digitizer and LCD assembly because of the touch functionality in these HP Envy units. So panel glass cannot be replaced separately without special equipment to first separate, and then re-fuse, the assembly together like factory. Not something for the DIYer or even the average repair shops to handle imo. Listings for parts like this are kinda scammy as they never explain you need $$ in extra gear to use the cheaper part. ;-)

Same process and approach. Obviously different part numbers, and the specific cable routing and adhesion points will vary from the 13" versions. The hinge design will differ as well.

I'm having the hinge problem on an HP Envy x360 15M-ee0013dx. The brackets broke off where the screws go in, do I have to replace the entire back plate for the screen or is there a way just to replace that bracket? It does not have the little metal ones pictured here.

You _might_ be able to re-epoxy the brackets back onto the cover, if that's all that you have broken there. The hinge screws onto the bracket, the bracket is expoxied to the cover (at least the Envy models this video covers are assembled in this manner). Typically though there is more than just this wrong, depending on how long the problem has not gotten repair attention. If the cover is bent, or the hinge is also broken, or the screw threads are stripped, etc then you have to replace the whole cover.

@@DrShock thanks for the heads up, I figured that would be the case. I'm already replacing the screen due to the damage this hinge issue caused. On the backplate of the 15.6" models are two cables leading up to some bars labeled AUX (left) and MAIN (right) with some copper squaring. I've done some digging but there just doesn't seem to be enough information on my model, so I can't figure out what these are for or if they're necessary in replacing the backplate. I've noticed replacement plates have a line on them marking where they should go, do you have any clues about this? I would try to fiddle with them but they seem firmly attached and I'm not sure if I'd need a soldering iron to put them on the new plate.

I've not seen that particular model, so not familiar with what those leads are used for. But usually the leads in this area are antennae related - Wi-Fi in most cases. With copper adhesive strips like the model I've shown in this vid. If the top cover is made from aluminum it's unlikely to be soldered on, perhaps a conductive epoxy instead. If the top cover is magnetic (ferrous metal) then it may very well be soldered on.

This is a question for the seller of the display. You'll have to make sure the connectors line up with the touch version, and are of the same pinout. HP used different motherboards in these ENVY laptops so some may support both display types, others may not.
