I’ll say this without hesitation because I am a father of 2 amazing young women and a wife that I cannot fathom to be living without her. 2 words come to my mind when I think of this mans decision to do what he did….. SELFISH…. WEAK…… As a man, I am utterly disgusted by such an act of this. Absolutely shameful.

Bankruptcy is a good option to consolidate applicable debt, and allow money to go towards the taxes. However the property taxes were likely bought up by someone at a municipal tax sale. So they can ultimately foreclose after a period of time usually two years, if they wish. However they are not first in line. If there is a mortgage, the bank will not allow their interest to be lost. So that presents an issue for the tax certificate holder. All that said, a bankruptcy gives the filer protection (from everyone) and stays all collection efforts until the stay is lifted. Add to that, first the husband can file, then the wife can file after his is over, creating more time.

It started as a financial issue that eventually turn to something too big for him to handle. Everyone puts up a front of the things we want people to see. But when reality of debt, tax evasion, fear, and shame was catching up, it took a toll. Then he finally broke. I just hate it when people just try to simplify it to mental health. But there's more to it that lead to this horrific tragedy.

The story doesn't make sense. How could he stab himself in the chest multiple times? If he texted his wife that he would kill all of them, then why would his wife and kids stick around? They bought their house for $1 million and it's now worth $1.7 million. Selling their house could have paid off their debts. If they were having financial problems for years, then why were they still sending their daughter to Iolani (tuition $28,250 per year)?

Also....I reviewed his yelp page.....in 2017, his financial situation took a hit (per media reports)... During that time, there were some patients who left their remarks to Dr. Oda informing him how RUDE and bad his receptionist was......maybe her attitude toward his patients, blindly led to his lack of patients and soon, piles and piles of unpaid bills.

I worked with a lot of people that went to private schools. They wasted all that money going nowhere only to work for $30/ hr. People think u need to go to private school u will have an edge in life but look at my cousins they went to public school now one is a nurse and the other is an engineer. It doesnt matter about the parents also becuase their mom was a housekeeper and their dad worked as a gardener. Its really about the motivation of the kids imo.

@@nlhernandez39 one of the main benefits though of going to a "particular private school" is that when they graduate and excel in certain areas, you see the media picks up the story as 'so n so is a graduate of -------------------School". So what? I think former Gov, Ben Cayetano went to Farrington as well as other notables. I reside in Kalihi, my parents would have allowed me to go to Dole Intermediate, but when they found out that my neighbor's daughter was hijacked at Dole, they went thru "district exemption" to make my brother and sis and me go to Kalakaua Intermediate instead. But we ALL did graduate (proudly!!!!) from Farrington HS.

It makes perfect sense though, he had financial issue. Didn't pay taxes which he owe and was trying to find a way out of debt but could not. Had he only took his own life then his debt falls on his wife and kids so to not let that burden fall on them he took them with him by murder suicide. If he only took his wife with him then his debt falls on his kids shoulders and that to him is even worst. In the end avoiding debts is what shattered his entire families. It's sad, he could had also find help but refused as well.

@@VOAN I mean, it still doesn’t really make sense. First, I believe that you cannot go to jail for unpaid taxes-of course tax fraud is different if that’s what was happening here. Chances are the debts could have been paid back. Anyway, the children probably didn’t want to die because of unpaid taxes. His wife probably didn’t. He didn’t give them a choice, he just killed them. Financial stress is one of the primary reasons for family annihilations (alongside when a partner, usually the wife, is trying to leave the relationship) but it doesn’t REALLY make sense. Also it differs state by state but it is likely that unpaid tax debt would not fall on his children’s shoulders if both parents were to die; the money from the parents’ assets would be used to pay but only if there is enough money, if not the debt may be forgiven. Anyway, the solution should have never been to kill his family. There are children born to parents who have basically NOTHING right from the beginning-so to kill your children over this… No…

Having children and or home ownership are becoming unattainable / unaffordable / unsustainable. I don't have children and I'm not rich by any means. I just work and try to save my money. I was raised poor and that's just the way it was. In fact most people I knew were poor. I'm sorry the beautiful children had to leave this earth in such horror. ✝✝ The whole family was beautiful.

I think she is a mom also.......... imagine dispatch calling your homicide detail to that address and inform them that this is a major crime scene with multiple stabbing victims.....all deceased. HPD is taking precautions because of what happened in 1999, at the Xerox office on Nimitz......7 doas. On one of the networks, she is seen outside next to the MTH morgue van.....

I've had a coworker kill himself at work and we couldn't understand why he left his wife and kids that he said loved. I thought he was selfish for doing what he did and try to understand... The more I look back I realize that trying to rationalize his intentions was useless. His mind wasn't thinking rationally. This man did this horrific act because he was under the belief it was "right" in his mind. If the warning signs are there, people need the help before it's too late. He was in mental duress. This is the worst outcome. If he had received help, it could've saved his life and his family. RIP

WTF. It was a beautiful family and he killed them all over money troubles. He forgot the #1 rule of family is to Love and Protect. He should have filed for bankruptcy or at the very least get mental health support to address his murderous thoughts. I would distance my family to me in this state and self delete before I ever harmed them. Men should Protect their families even from themselves if necessary at all cost.

It gave me nightmares couple nights also thinking what his children and wife went through. I had to locate the house this morning and said prayers for the eternal repose of their souls. So heart breaking. If I were the wife and my husband was planning (even just mentioned) to kill all of us, I would not waste time but escape with my children Seek help from friends, or parents of their children's classmates, or the Police, any government agency... so sad :(

Maybe he convinced himself that the kids might be saddled with his debt as soon as the oldest turned 18, that they would never be able to go to college because he couldn't pay for it, that he ruined their lives so he just ended the whole nightmare because his mind had become so twisted. It was a shame that he had an obedient wife on top of it all. Very, very sad that none of the other relatives stepped in.

Just like the korean lady recently on the news.....she got caught evading taxes from the IRS. She pled guilty. Its called SHAME....especially if you an asian......haoles, pinos, etc, they no care ....no more shame. He might have gotten a letter from the Feds and told him that he was indicted and he must turn himself in. That probably would be the last straw

His business was not successful because he was losing patients. From what I read his receptionist from years back was nasty and patients vowed to not return for treatments at his office. Therefore losing income. Among other reasons. So many patients complained. His brother was known to scam his own patients, losing patients too. He could have been sued if the patients wasnt forced to sign waivers. His brother was fined for not paying his office space rent. Im sure there is alot more.

First of all, it's very heartbreaking and upsetting. Why didn't he make any other choice? Why diid he go to extremes? Why didn't he apply for Bankruptcy? Why didn't he transfer his kids to public schools, why didn't his wife go to work? There could have been so many ways in which American society could have helped these people, but didn't he ask for help... It's just a pity. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family who was lost to this tragedy.
