People sometimes say that the United States has never produced any “great” composers to put up besides the masters of the Old World like Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. I disagree. The US has produced at least two such … John Philip Sousa and Scott Joplin. That we still enjoy their works after the passage of more than a Century proves that their music is truly eternal.

History shows how great and talented a lot of Black people were in that era especially after jim crow, slavery, etc...Scott Joplin had wrote another opera called The Guest of Honor which was stolen and never found...so sad and this is not the only story that has been robbed of what could have became an acheivement toward a better lifestyle for black people....there's way too many stories to tell and its sad that hate and destruction have held them down every since....

This is not how Joplin wrote them - not dotted notes. It lacks the original dignity and slower pace than Joplin intended, I think. They're not meant to bounce along and go fast.

I really feel like if he came back I know who he is today. Nobody paid attention but this man has the same musical background as Scott and they have the same initials in their names. He had time to come back . The person I think he is loves the keyboards now. He played the background with his popular family. Say if he realize how simular they are with each other. He would probably check this out. He even looks like Scott all over again. 2022

Interesting you should say that. Although I've known a lot of the most popular ones since I was small, I've just listened to "The Easy Winners" for the first time (I thought) and recognised it - I'm pretty sure it was the music on an early computer game that I used to play (I think) on the ZX Spectrum or the BBC Micro, called 'Cowboy Shootout'

I've posted this comment once before, so I'm saying nothing new. But Joplin has the looks of a movie star. Creole, as we once said, long ago, when I was young. And before drugs took its toll on Holiday, she, too, was a beautiful girl, her aging giving her character.

Most people only know him because of "mApLe lEaF rAg" or "tHe EnTeRtAIneR" or "The Sting" He has other works too, usually people just say "oh this guy made these songs, cool" Then they move on in life, and when someone mentions Scott Joplin they act like they have known him since birth, Its sad. And don't even ask me about the comparison about saloons and all these jokes. When will his music become *his music*, *scott joplin* not some bar fight or movie
@2manyIce3 жыл бұрын
@@naturlent2336 Actually "The Sting" lives of Scott Joplins music and wouldn't be half as good without it. In fact, during the great depression Joplins music was all but forgotten. Jazz would be the more apropriate choice of music for The Sting. If it wasn't for The Sting we would not even have this video or this conversation. Joplins music lives because of The Sting. So cool it.
@deabadami44353 жыл бұрын
@@naturlent2336 I know Joplin because I've loved ragtime since I first started playing at age 6 in 1951. Anyone who is really interested in music, jazz, blues, has experienced ragtime from Joplin's huge and impressive catalog - even if they may not recognize who wrote it. Joplin was so prolific - and even wrote concert pieces ... one of the most incredible is Bethena. So beautiful. If people ONLY think Joplin is "The Entertainer" they are missing out on some exquisite music.
@naturlent23363 жыл бұрын
@@2manyIce The thing Scott Joplin needed was popularity. And having a movie to do that helped. But claiming it would only be half as good without the movie is disagreeable to me. Im grateful the sting was released, but its been about 50 years and I think were not as ignorant to just forget an entire genre.
