In this video, you will see a real encounter with a huge catfish that takes the bait on the Ohio river but sometimes the angler doesn't always win.

Ya, I usually sit and pout for several minutes. Had one hooked funny, when I had him up by boat he was mad. Twirling around and the hook was such that to be honest had I lipped him I may have got cut up pretty bad from hook. I turn to grab net, Nope, My dumbass forgot to put the net back in the boat from some bank fishing I did few days before. This fish was around 20 to 25 and for that water a biggun. He actually unhooked himself and floated top water for what felt like a full minute like he didn't realize he was free at that point. In a last ditch effort I tried to grab him by the tail as he slowly turned to bottom. Couldn't hang on. I literally pouted a bit, I won't lie. Went and bought a net just for boat as soon as I got back to town. LOL. True story. Win some and lose some. Good or bad I will never forget that.

It takes a lot of self control for me to keep from busting the rod over my knee and throwing it into the river. It is a horrible feeling when you loose large fish and you never forget those lost fish either.

Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you. That would have been a nice one. When they strip line out when in the holder, it is always a good sign. But that's alright Steve, I will be down there in a week or two and pull him out for you. :-) Always think positive. Thanks for the great videos. Oh, and I will put him right back for you.

Mr Douglas, I've heard you speak of not fishing using the gut pocket as part of your bait, but on some videos you do use the entire cut of bait including the gut pocket. Are there times when using the gut pocket is beneficial as I understand why you don't use or like to use the gut pocket. Thank you for your entertains videos!
@PeelingDragCatfishing
@PeelingDragCatfishing 6 жыл бұрын
Bob Monroe this is old but I'm going to say I think the reason he doesn't use the gut pocket is because the fish might grab the bottom of the bait first and not get a hook up and to keep the channel cats from pecking on your bait.

You took that very well LOL. I had one do that to me on Possum Kingdom Reservoir in Texas; fought him for about 30 minutes and never laid eyes on him and he simply just got off. For sure would have been my biggest on rod and reel but no shortage of 50 plus pound catfish being caught out of there all the time on jugs and trots back in the day before moving to Arkansas.

I've hooked fish in the Ohio River that I couldn't turn around when they decided to take off. One that got hooked down by Meldahl dam bent a shark hook straight. I've used bluegills the size of my hand to fish in the river so I don't think 11 inches is too big.

We've all been there BUT I KNOW YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO SEE THAT FISH! At least he got it on camera also I'll tell you why we both wouldn't. I was below a dam on the Ohio where there's a washout hole cats hang out in springtime, or in the fall when temps are reaching 60 degrees. Active catfish, blues and channels mostly, are near the top and parts of the middle. Ideal spot no snags except your anchor lines. Which you can cut, and get back later since like most we buoyed them. Water temps perfect, slowly rising lightly stained water. Freshly caught skippies, shad and my fav. cut bait that time of year ?. I knew we'd have a fish on five minutes after setting up. I did, a nice channel cat about 12#'s. We didn't use Gamakatzu or even offset hooks on the boat. 12/0 Eagle Claw brass colored Baitholders were easier to snell in all that madness. Remember I was 18 too so this was new to me. Fast currents and a hungry channel or blue that just inhaled your bait will run from the other fish and hook themselves every time in those conditions. While in-hooking the channel my rod slowly bent down into the water At first my buddy said "Looks like you're hung up on a log or something Crispy." I thought so at first as it was slowly moving with the current. Then the Ugly Stick really bent down and started dancing. By the time I picked the rod out of the holder maybe 25 yards of line were off the 209D. I couldn't do anything but watch my line go my spool, even while thumbing and palming it, till she took it all and finally broke my Arbor knot. Not a few weeks before underwater wielders refused to go back down claiming there were fish the size of small cars right where they were wielding. I never believed cats that big were still down there tell after I talked to one and saw his face. He said he was just milking the clock but saw three or more fish bigger than him slapping around. So I waited till the pool level dropped and we got a good warm rain, got in my first boat out and had "the opportunity". Congrats Mr. Douglass getting great footage of that. I would have loved to had footage of that Ugly Stick just going nuts and me burning my thumbs and hands up. Cutting the anchor lines after the fish ran sideways and started pulling the boat. Following it down river and a fight over 45 minutes till it spooled me. If anything as a reminder you can have everything as perfect as it can get and loose to nature. That's a reason I love going after big fish. Still, I wouldn't have wanted to see that fish anywhere but in the boat, in the net with my friend on top of her turned over. Not even the tail or so much as a swirl from a roll. So I have a feeling you highly wouldn't have either.
