Warlord have clarifired that one Rifle Platoon unlocks one of each other platoon, you only need two Rifle Platoons if you want a second platoon of a specific type, ie two Armoured Platoons or two Heavy Weapon Platoons.

Actually I read it like that during the video. For me it didn't need clarification. The "you can only have as many multiples of any Platoon type as you have Rifle Platoons" was perfectly worded for me.

A reinforced unit is typically how real military organizations operate. However, this new system is essentially simulating the same thing where you have a Rifle Platoon that is reinforced by another type of platoon in its entirety rather than a single attachment from another type of platoon. Both make sense.

@jonathanbirkeland1085 Yes, I know military units support each other. I spent 14 years in the military. Attaching single howitzers or armor to an infantry platoon was goofy game design. The new way is a more sensical way to do it as a base. Future supplements can portray more ad hoc organizations with off the wall attachments.

Well: The wording of the rule was pretty straightforward in my opinion: "As many multiples of any platoon types" means, that total number of Rifle platoons is the upper limit for any other type of platoon. So if you take a single minimum Rifle platoon, then you can spend the rest of your points on all of the other platoons. But you can only take 0-1 of any type...

My biggest gripe, however, is pistols. I love giving them to my officers (especially early war) because it was thematic, and I figured at least they had tough fighter. Now, there is no benefit to it so why not just take an SMG?

As a French player a welcome my 3 Howitzer 5 medium mortar platoon options. Also I don't think platoon commanders will be any better. Warlord knows their game and knows they are a tax and that will be a stealth balance for being allowed to take these new platoons, which looks so far that they could be used for cheese.

I've got Sharpe's Command, it's weird how they can't decide whether he's a Captain or Major, as he's referred to as both. He should just be a Captain given the chronological order of the book, other than that, it's good.

You can take armoured platoons in 2nd ed Bolt Action, with 5 tanks - using the Tank War book or campaign books

I believe historically this was more acurate… at least in British doctrine the light mortar was a platoon level weapon whereas the medium mortar was company level.

@@julianwarren7770 The trouble is that a lot of countries didn't have these at the same time: in both the German and Soviet armies, the platoon would lose light mortars as the company gained medium mortars. A late-war German army shouldn't have grenatenwerfers at all unless if it's following the TO&Es (which, to be fair, many German units didn't).

At first I tought it was done like you say one rifle platoon plus something else and so forth. But after re-reading the article I am pretty sure one rifle platoon unlocks one of each other platoon and you only need two rifle platoons if you want two Armored platoons for exsample.

I remember back when I was playing Dust Warfare the vehicle mounted machine guns were just the same as the emplaced ones, and I thought there was just no way it worked like that in real life. I like this new way of doing it, it's a very clean fix.

I am a little worried about how many officers we will need. I think most players have only one. Also now cant just throw in a tank you have to take other vehicle which is quite an inconvenience.

an armoured car (including jeeps and bike/sidecar) can be one of the vehicles along side the tank.

I actually hope Platoon Commanders are very diverse. Army command is sometimes good and sometimes bad. You should have the choice of super cheap commanders that are literally a tax, maybe even give some penalty. Then you have expensive commanders that, like MG said, gives real benefits that you want to have. That way your elite army can be even more elite, and your horde can be even more horde!

I wonder then if they dialed back MMGs on tanks if they’ll put in the tracer fire to make their HE or AT main gun more accurate ? If so I’m all for the MMG change on the tanks. They are pretty clever with their fluffy stuff so I for one would love some tracer fire accuracy improvement.

Would be cool if the vehicle machine guns gave the main gun a small buff. Like if the machine gun hits a tank or infantry unit, regardless of damage or not, main gun got a small boost to hit. Re-roll or +1, I don't know how much room is in the rules for it.

Look at how they massacred my boys. :( Yes, there were complaints about snipers online, usually from people who didn't understand how to do counter-sniping (the biggest threat to a sniper's life and limb is another sniper. This means enemy snipers will be very high on a sniper's to-kill list: even if your sniper loses, your MG is probably safe). I keep career stats for the units in my Bolt Action armies, and my best sniper has scored 20 kills over the course of 36 games: a success rate of just under 59%. That's pretty good, but it's hardly game-breaking: even if my opponent doesn't bother with counter-sniping at all, his machine gun has a decent chance of surviving the entire battle, despite the attentions of my sniper.

The Char 2C is looking better and better. It's got enough MMGs and a howitzer to do anti-infantry. If I include a rifle platoon and two AT Guns, that should make for a solid force.

I was hoping there would be more compatibility with all the current starter army boxes. As it stands, it looks like a portion of the included units will be effectively unusable without additional purchases. For instance, I recently got the Fallschirmjaeger starter box, and 3e seems to nuke my ability to use its flamethrower team or Panzerschreck team under any circumstances. Similarly, the medium mortar team is out of the picture unless I pretend it's a light one. Oh, same with the PaK 40. That's close to half the box out of action, even if I went out and bought all the damn officers every little composition pivot requires. I'm not impressed.

i read it as half of your army will always by inf platoons.... if you have 4 inf platoons, then you can have 4 other platoons of any type, for a total of 8... BA is an infantry centric game...

Well I have a couple different forces, because what gamer has only one army, I mostly play German so I can be the de facto bad guy in my local store. And always low-key bothered me that the Americans could bring more machine guns than me. I'm very happy to see that's no longer the case. And I am happy about the machine guns on tanks changes. I'm sure some variants will probably have a rule that says they get the full bonus against infantry, but having dealt with THAT Italian tank and watching it mulch my veteran squads with little difficulty. I will not miss that thing's reign of terror.

Try the DAK Light Division list (Campaign The Western Desert p 115). You are allowed a max of x6 "Schutzen" squads. Each squad (CTWD p 93) is composed of 6-10 men, up to 2 men can have Lmgs and the first Lmg is free! They need the usual loaders and can be reg/vets. I'm not sure if we will be able to use these campaign books with Ed 3 rules.

Remember that these are only the Generic platoons and that presumably the nation/Campaign book rewrites will give us more flexible platoon organisation. I for one am happy to see the end of Assault pistols but the SAS/LRDG has been seriously nerfed with the new Vehicle MG rules

You're not building a platoon anymore, you're building s ksmpfgruppe, or a battlegroup, if you can take "As many multiples of any types can be taken literally. As always, it will depend on how many points will be available and the cost of the units themselves.

I’m not sure it would be in their interest as there is an already competing 15mm scale game that is highly successful… Flames of War. I know there are other epic scale napoleonics/ACW etc, but not to the popularity level of Warlord games.

Who plays on average with more than one platoon each side anyway? Just think of the number of order dice you will need for even just three platoons each side. This sounds more like Epic scale bolt action than 28mm 3rd edition. Too much money already spent on all the books and figures so will stick to good old second edition myself.
