One of the big takeaways from this resolution is that Magnus Carlsen has agreed to compete against Hans Neimann in future in-person tournaments. At the start of this whole scandal, Magnus said he wouldn't play in any tournaments that Hans played in, which would basically instakill Hans's career, since every major chess tournament will invite Magnus over Hans if they're forced to pick one.

"Once a cheater, always a cheater." has always rubbed me the wrong way. That's basically implying that the person can't ever grow and change as a person and will always make the same mistakes forever.
@HighViscosityАй бұрын
Second chances, most often, are best reserved for mistakes. Cheating isn't that. It's an intentional and damaging breach of someone's trust. Strangely, for as common as it is, I've never heard a 'good' reason to cheat that I could understand. It usually boils down to one partner feeling they're lacking something like affection. You know what your recourse is, then? You break up. That's it. If you can't do that, then you are simply a coward. Only the worst of us can find rationale behind cheating, and if they can once, it's not outrageous to imagine they would again. That's not the same as saying they can't change, but you shouldn't expect anyone to have to throw in behind someone who's already shown they can be duplicitous. Some things in this world are unforgivable. If you break someone's trust, their defenses go up. If you want to be a better person, you shouldn't need a chorus telling you to do so. If you can't grow otherwise, you probably weren't capable of growth in the first place.

There’s a chance that there was a mole in Magnus’ circle, the main point of speculation was Hans miraculously studied Magnus’ opening line (which Magnus had never opened with prior to the match) the morning of, as he stated in a post game interview. Perhaps Magnus did that to try and prove/flush out the collaboration
@princessaria10 ай бұрын
Those are not the only two options lol. It is equally possible that Magnus simply believed he cheated because of the circumstances (specifically him apparently preparing for an opening Magnus has never used in competition and having suspicions of a mole), and that everyone else looked at it and went “yeah, that’s valid.” Then it came out that Hans did cheat in online games, which added even more justification to those doubts of a legitimate win. I don’t think any of the parties actually involved in this situation thought he used cutting edge tech, they thought he simply knew the opening in advance, which makes it a lot easier to prepare for.

People initially balked at the $100 million in damages that Niemann was demanding, but it makes sense in the context of Carlsen's own net worth which is like over $50 million right now in his early 30s, and could probably double over the rest of his professional career just through investments and market returns, etc. The argument goes that since Niemann beat Carlsen in such a public and high profile match, he has a credible claim to having been denied a similar career trajectory. It will be interesting to see what happens to him now as a cleared professional player WRT his baggage but at the very least he'll make the game interesting for a while
