Naturally Spalted Plum with a very large crack nearly all the way through the width of the bowl. Some very deteriorated wood, some punkiness, lots of bug holes under the ever-flying bark! This gave me a very hard time.

I am 80 years old and have been very active most of my life. I fell hit my head and got a brain bleed. I spend almost a month in the hospital. Started watching wood turning. I watched all the guys with glueing things together and forming with epoxy but no interest. I just love watching your videos. It is like you are talking to me as a friend and you let the piece dictate the end product. Thank you for providing a very interesting product.

Thank you Nate. Thank you Phil “the Bark Man” Anderson. No “Flying Wood” t-shirt for you this time! Great seat of pants, suspense video. Next time you get that soft punky wood like that, brush on sanding sealer, then continue turning. It does a great job of stiffening the fibers without filling up the voids. It will save you from a whole ton of extra sanding.

As usual, I was doing what I love in watching the Phil Anderson magic show. This is my favorite part of the day. I saw no fear only ultimate confidence. I was glad to know the best encounters what I have to deal with on a daily basis. I was glad to see how you dealt with bad cracks, very punkey wood, and lose bark. These projects take a lot more time than anticipated and it is well worth it, The results speak for themselves. It turned out JUST STUNNING!!!!! Don't feel afraid to show it to anyone!!!!! Phil I'm very glad you always work with a net, in the form of a face shield...truly. First it was the dust storm, then the bark was lifting and threatening to come off, then the crack got messy on that one side, and then you had an iffy tenon, but you kept persevering...as you do. I might have spit it at the crack...I don't know. I know how important the bark is to you so I get why you kept fixing it, but it's Plum and even without the bark it's beautiful wood with great grain patterns. At any rate Phil, I'm VERY happy to hear you so clearly say that it is ART. That's a big step for you and I want to honor it. Yes Phil, you make Art! :-D

Hi Phil, That is indeed beautiful. I have found one thing out this morning and that is I can't drink my tea while holding my breath. LOL. That is an amazing piece of turning which I believe not many people would have even started to do let alone get such a wonderful piece at the end. Fantastic Phil. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

Well that turned out great. Just before sanding the inside you stated "I'm wondering who else would do this, and then put it out for everyone to see." Regardless of who else, it's because you do put it out for all to see that is one of the main reasons I continue watching your channel. I so thoroughly enjoy your tips and explanation of your work, and of course, I enjoy the end pieces. Kudos to you sir, and I hope you continue for everyone's enjoyment.

Well Phil, I would have carried on!! Honest to goodness, when I get a piece like that I always think to myself "what would Phil do?" I've said it a few times before, but you have changed the way I look at wood. A lot of the things I turn today likely would have been in a burn pile. This time though you had a real challenge!! Of course you carried on and made an exceptional piece of art. Plum at best is a cracky test, but spalted as well.......Hmmmm! Thank you. Cheers, Rick

Phil, how you approach each turning truly amazes me. You take the outcasts of others and tun then into AMAZING pieces of art that can be used for decoration or..... M&Ms. You are a truly blessed and talented person. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and uncanny ability to turn cracked, punky, and often times discarded wood into masterpieces.

I'm early tonight! Well I must say mr Anderson, I would have conceded defeat to the lump of wood even before it got to the lathe. You however have pulled something quite remarkable out of the proverbial hat once again. That looked extremely challenging, but as you quite rightly say, it turned out beautiful! That was some challenge, Phil. If I was a turner, I would have split it down that crack, and fed it to my woodburner. However, you are the master, and have created a beautiful bowl. I agree about epoxy: a natural finish for me!

Thank You Phil, Thank You Nate.... A little late Phil (had to go to the rib joint so now sitting, watching with a big bib on, ha)... This bowl did give you some serious concerns but with a lot of ingenuity, glue, manipulation (Phil-er-a-zation?) you were able to successfully complete another trophy piece of almost too far gone Spalted Plum at it's ragged edge of turnability..At 22:29 the bark is like a small bridge detached above the wood. YOU PULLED IT OFF & FUN TO WATCH !!! Until next time.... TM

Don't get those sticky fingers all over your mouse, Tuffy! Yeah, this one was a tuffy, too! I was going to fill those voids under the bark but once I saw it finished, I liked that "bridge" effect, too. I'm just glad it stuck together. Thank you, buddy! 😄
