Oh Phil, it may be older or damaged wood, but the subtle grain coloration I find quite appealing. Additionally, it challenged you a bit too, and if you are even a little like me, you still enjoy conquering a challenge. You gave it a chance to be something other than moldy wood. It is a unique and usable piece.

Phil, it's ALWAYS a JOY to spend time with you. Although we're not physically with you we are with you in spirit. The piece of Butternut you had was NOT good to look at BUT, in typical Phil, 'never say never' you decided to give it your best shot AND YOU WON. This bowl is brilliant when one considers what you started with & it certainly would make a great 'key bowl' & I am sure many other uses could be found for it. Well, that old log deserved a chance and you brought out some nice features in it. The grain on the bottom really is pretty. I have to tell you that I've got a picture in my mind of you "slobbering" that sanding sealer on the piece. There really aren't many better words for it. Perhaps slather. Daub or smear really don't convey the idea very well. Best of luck with the computer upgrade. I remember when getting a new computer was an exciting event because of all the new features and capabilities that came with the upgrade; it has now become more traumatic than exciting. I will say that upgrading has become less traumatic after migrating to the Apple environment -- the last several upgrades have been really very transparent and painless.

I was excited to see the crotch figure in this piece! While it’s a beautiful turn, Phil, it is a little disappointing with regard to wood grain character. Eight weeks ago I turned a cracked and pithy piece of hard dense wood I still cannot identify. I’d glued and epoxied cracks. Taped the outside tightly when I hollowed it. After taking the tape off, it needed to be refinished because of the sticky residue it left. I went back over and sanded to 800, used sanding sealer, and then micro shine. I even took out a wool bonnet to buff the micro paste. I noticed the lid fitting needed just a tad better clean-up so I reached past my mask to grab a negative rake… POW! The bowl blew in three pieces. Thirteen stitches in my cheek later, a concussion, nerve damage, and a seven inch scar later I can talk about this stupid mistake. The laceration went clear through and wood chips came out when the cut was irrigated. Tomorrow is the first time I’ll use the lathe again after this accident. I got an airflow mask now. Every time I hear you say, “Mask and face shield on” I reflect on your reminder. That one, last, itty-bitty micro clean up on a lid setting almost cost me my life had that bowl hit my forehead of eyes. Thank you for your talents and reminders each week Phil!

Seven years ago I volunteered to build an ADA ramp for an elderly couple who couldn’t afford to have it professionally built. I was admiring his beautiful butternut trees. Howdy Phil You like the Ryobi belt sander too ...Had to get one myself ... Mitutoyo died with big sparks flying out of it ! ... after 40 years or so .. When you were turning the bottom it looked like there was gold stuck in the wood , at the angle I saw . If it was used standing up ...I think would put a clock in it ... I would not use it for keys but for gold nuggets I fine in my back yard ...LOL It is wood ... it turns on nice ... would walk pass it ... keep on turnin'

Haha, great comments today, Bruce! I think a clock is a great idea, thanks! 😊

It's really not that bad. It has some pretty grain on front and back. The bark is interesting. It's not your prettiest piece, but it's certainly not awful.

That's great wood, Bobby! Maybe let some of it dry for awhile to save the mess! 😊

You may not like it, Phil, but I think it looks just fine. Not every piece is going to have a shiny finish... or needs to, for that matter. But you know this.

Hi Phil, Great work! I really do appreciate your dedication to your pieces. I actually like the color of this wood and the contrast where the wood meets the bark. Always enjoyable to watch your expertise unfold. Good luck with your computer project!

@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Never seen no Yellerbellys around here, plenty of redheaded woodpeckers though, and I've seen that same pattern of holes.

This takes me back 35+ years when my brother made us custom kitchen cabinets in butternut or white walnut. I agree with you this is not the best piece but we were thrilled with how our cabinets turned out. Good try, thanks for not giving up on it. 👍

A silk purse out of a pig's ear. Maybe not, but it demonstrates you can make something from nothing! As for the computer storage, you may want to consider an external hard drive that you just plug into your new computer's port. Then when you get your new computer you will have everything all safe and secure. Good luck, my friend, and thanks for the great videos!

Thank you, Robert! 😊 I have a new 18 terabyte external hard drive and a new 12 terabyte NAS. I should be good to go!

I don’t know whether this is sad or not take it as you are, yellow bellied sap sucker, I thought I remember seeing this before, but it was around two years ago and I actually just found it, And the same piece of wood came from the same person, Valerie, And I think, if you look in the bottom of the bowl when you hold it in a particular way, you can see your purple birds flying especially you can see the heads and beak, I have a very vivid imagination , I still think it is a piece of art and it turned out, alright, I’ve actually just watched this just gone 2 o’clock in the morning, I started laying my waterproof OBS flooring yesterday but after lying about eight or nine boards, I twisted my back, I think the word not as young as I used to be, And swinging a piece of 8’ x 2’ flooring grade boarding around it taking its toll on my back, I laid on my settee last night and I fell asleep there. 😂, and yes, I did watch loads of refuse on E-bike, I did think about getting one, the problem is I think my mountains hills will kill the bike within 15” min, So I purchased a HOG instead, I have still got to pick up, it is another reason why I’m trying to get my workshop garage sorted out, I’m even thinking of building a elevator lift in my 4 story Mill , nice one Phil, great piece of art at least it didn’t go on the fire, And yes, I know what it smells like. I’ve had some wood laying around with a lot of mould on it very similar last year., not very good for the lungs,

I've worked with a lot of punky wood as I like trying to turn spalted pieces. I have two techniques I use for sealing the punky. I will use shellac as I turn and reapply with each cut or I just use thin CA. I know you had a bad experience with CA at one time and are probably not in favor of that technique but if you soak the area with CA and then leave the area for 5 - 10 minutes it doesnt jhave as strong an effect on your eyes. I use salf made Shellac and can blend to different pound cuts. The Shellac will eventually permeate all the punky wood and will stabilize it. Love your videos and appreciate all issues you encounter and how you tackle them. Great looking and keep up the great work. PS....I have several pieces that are 'key catchers' and they hold up really well.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop9 ай бұрын
I have done all of that, as well, including on this piece. Not CA this time but sealer, dry, sand, repeat. The problem is, I'm trying to get a video out and not much time for waiting around! LOL!
@Mortalis29 ай бұрын
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Time......yes, you needs time for the Shellac to dry before adding more if needed. Thin CA sets rather quickly but, either way the solution needs to cure before moving forward. I do these techniques during the turning phase.

The crotch feather on the bottom is the best part. Was it stored out in the shed? Our damp climate can really mess up wood blanks. And Butternut is soft to start with. Good job getting something nice out of it. And happy upgrade. Hope it goes smoothly!!!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop9 ай бұрын
Agree, Valerie! No, it's been in the shop since I got it. It did sit out by the tree for a day or so before I got to it. I think I've got the upgrade figured out, I'm gonna start tomorrow! 😊
