I feel like the main issue from many international kpop fans is that they are worried that without a clear-cut definition of what kpop actually is, many people may try to use stereotypes to define "Kpop." Additionally, these people who have no idea/any connections/have never been involved int the Kpop industry may use these pre-existing negative stereotypes to go out and make music they call "Kpop" based off of them. I think that many worry about the integrity of Kpop. As Suga said in an interview, "K-pop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach K-pop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.” I don't think you can call it Kpop, because I personally thought of it (first impression) as more of a pop song with random korean words here and there. Also, to take KAACHI, a non-korean/asian English group and have them sing in broken Korean is just a very odd concept to me. I don't think it's a matter of practicing a language. They just simply have no experience with Korea and Korean culture, and now they are taking the umbrella term "Kpop" and applying it to themselves, without fully understanding? Now, you may say that people everywhere are doing it with English . . . but . . . English is a widely used language found in countries across the world. There is no specific sentiment or culture attached to it-- it's a language everyone uses. Some may say that they do understand Korean culture, but they are still making an attempt to learn about it. That's fine, I don't have anything to say about that, but . . . when a member of KAACHI makes derogatory comments about certain kpop idols, and Korean culture in general, that's when they go too far. It is blatant disrespect, and in my eyes, goes to show that they AREN'T interested in learning about it at all. There was a lot of hate before simply because they weren’t considered "traditional" Kpop, but most people starting hating them a lot more when this happened . . . "they just debuted and already have a controversy" is what many kpop stans think. I mostly agree with Danny and David on this issue-- if you don't like it, just ignore it. However, when something like the above happens . . . I don't really see many people ignoring it. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Edit: Spelling and Grammar

Flower Music17 but also a lot of people are hating on them solely because they aren’t fully korean, saying white people should “stay in their own industry” which I think is stupid and divisive. Also with the double standard saying its wrong for the western music industry to exclude Asians, but then the people saying that are also excluding western people from the asian music industry

very good comment - you summed it up well 👍🏻 Your reasing is very clear and neat and it makes sense without sounding off as too personal and biased. It is not really a personal complaint but rather a complaint about how this music industry will reduce kpop to something less that it actually is. Personally I enjoy kpop for everything it offers- it is a mixture of different types of arts put together with a very clear vision, idea and purpose behind it with refined infrastructure and system and the final product that we see is sold out to us by people who work very hard and with a lot of dedication and passion. If they went through the same intense training that korean trainees go through as they only trained properly for two months and also the lack of Korean. I think they should have learned a decent amount of the language so they could pronounce things correctly in the song. 5. They had original concepts and not copied other groups. 6. The video inst that great and the dance isn't in sync in the video also the vocals and rap isn't that great either. kpop has a certain fashion sense, the way they promote songs, the way they do performances, the archetypes of members, the fan culture, the concepts. also, an idol is not just a musician or singer. they're an entertainer and a performer primarily. this is different from western pop characteristics. and jpop sounds nothing like pop as defined by americans. although i do agree that they'd have been better off calling themselves an idol group, since that'd explain what they are just as well

I think if the producer had claimed to be deeply influenced by K-pop or inspired by it she wouldn't be getting so much criticism. But I don't think it's possible call yourself K-pop if you don't put in the work that K-pop artists put in. It's like saying "I'm an Olympic gymnast" because I did a somersault across the living room floor. Olympic athletes don't all come from Greece anymore. But they all put in the work. Other countries can claim to be producing K-pop when they start putting out the same level of quality in their work. Until then it's just fan projects. K-pop isn't different just because it's in Korean. The amount of work that top artists put into their content makes it different, too. But I really admire the generous attitude you guys have about these girls. FYI, I am super into Se So Neon thanks to you guys. I loved their performance on Studio Music Hall.

I guess I just feel like while yes, kpop is a genre, and no, you don’t technically need to be fluent in the language to sing it necessarily, it is a little strange when or other individuals that are not asian go around speaking broken korean and singing in korean when it’s not really their culture? Take Selena for example. She was one of the most famous Mexican pop stars ever and sang in Spanish, but she didn’t speak Spanish fluently at all... but she was still Mexican, and it’s her culture to express. If a band of white or asian or black people who never grew up in the Latin culture and knew very little about it and started speaking in broken Spanish and dressing in Spanish fashion and singing in Spanish and making all their MV’s Latin based, and giving themselves Mexican or Spanish names, when they didn’t speak Spanish at all or really know much about Latin culture, it’d be a little strange. It’s fine to appreciate a culture and be a fan of the music and music style obviously, but I’m not sure it’s really their place to be singing in korean and having themselves korean names and calling themselves Maknaes and stuff. It feels very awkward to me.
@AF-ft6nh4 жыл бұрын
just a quick question about "it is a little strange when or other individuals that are not asian go around speaking broken korean and singing in korean when it’s not really their culture" - so if a Pakistani, Turkish or Saudi individuals were to start a kpop group it would be ok because they're asian? And what about kpop idols who aren't Korean and didn't grow up in Korea but are idols in successful kpop groups, is it ok for them to be called kpop idols even though Korean culture isn't theirs?
@Vicky194634 жыл бұрын
but what about English speaking artists from the States or Europe or wherever singing in Spanish though? Nobody has an issue with that, but when it comes to singing in Korean you HAVE to be Korean? It's literally just creating problems for the sake of it lol

AF and also - what about Korean idols who sing in Spanish or Korean? 🤔 or any non English speaker in the world singing in English?! 😄 people can sing in whatever language they want and that’s that😌

More then that I feel that personally if you want to be a kpop idol/singer/group. You should debut in Korea. I think that is the one requirement I would have for something to be considered Kpop. I mean if you want to be a part of the industry you go to that industry. For example, if I wanted to be an actor staring in American movies I probably go to America right? It just doesn’t make sense to me to label yourself as Kpop when you don’t debut in Korea. Like when artists here in the states make a wave, they come to the states. Or when you an athlete getting scouted you move to where the team is located.

Sephie Rivers Yes, David name is Kim Kyungsoo. I remeber it because they joked about it few times how he has the same first name as D.O. from EXO (full name Do Kyungsoo hence Davids bias in EXO) and Danny has said they even resemble each other. David just kept saying: Please stop saying that - I assume he was afraid of the fans, but they actually do look a bit alike. 😃 So to sum it up- he is Kim Kyungsoo. Don’t know about Danny though.

The problem is not that people don't want diversity in music - because that's exactly what they want. They want to see asians slay the music industry world-wide and not get pushed aside again by white artists. So many asian artists born in USA/Canada/Europe only have the chance to succeed when they go to korea or japan. Jackson Wang, Jay Park, Ailee, Mark Lee , Wendy, Tablo (etc the list is very long) would have gotten absolutely nowhere in the mestern music market. After K-POP got so huge it got kinda normal to see asians in western media. Asian representation is pretty much non-existent in western media (I can literally only think of Luzy Liu, Jackie Chan, Sandra Oh and Ken Joung from the top of my head sorry) For f'@%&s sake people still call BTS chinese or japanese and use derogatory terms to refer to them or saying they can't tell them apart - after almost 4 years of them being incredibly popular in the western market. The *cross-race-effect* has to be minimized.
@izzywoods7944 жыл бұрын
Annie X THANK YOU! Idk why but it seems like a lot of “majority races” that already have a ton of opportunities in their own countries think it’s unfair that kpop is mostly Korean and mostly asian! A lot of K-pop music is similar to western pop and hip hop. Just like Danny made a good point about that Korean rapper, even though he's not from America he makes hip hop music. To me.. this is not about nationality, as consumers of kpop in general, we have a standard and certain things we expect from the artists. We´ve seen very young kids going to auditions then the years and years of training to be really good at dancing, singing, rapping and so much more just to debut, that when a group like this appears it seems like they are not even trying to be a kpop group even though they claim to be one... and that´s why we can´t emphatize with what they are doing.
