You should read The Candy Shop Wars by Brandon Mull. It was the first "long" book I ever read (at least, it was long to little six-year-old me!), and I remember that I just loved it.

I think I found your videos through Sasha's channel and I'm so glad I did! Its really nice to have someone who talks about and loves middle grade fantasy! I love those kind of books but I've always felt a little weird about picking them up and reading them because I'm 18 now and so many people go on and on about how they are 'too young' and 'not complex' and 'not good' which makes me sad but also makes me weary to try a lot of them, even if they sound right up my alley. You've reminded me that it doesn't matter as long as I'm enjoying what I'm reading, so thanks for that!! Plus you make lots of great recommendations in general, but especially for middle grade (which I don't see a lot of elsewhere) which is wonderful! Thanks so much for doing what you're doing :) I'm seriously enjoying your videos a ton

I hope you see this comment! I would be REALLY interested if you did a haul or something of ASIAN writers or book written about Asian Culture/Asian experience (in Asian/Asian American) & then did book recommendations from that haul!!! Or if you know of some books off hand. I only found about 2-3 videos on the topic and would love if you'd do one too! Thanks!

Oooohhh, I'm intrigued by The Dark Days Club. I added it to my amazon wish list. Next pay, it's mine! Like you, I'm fascinated by books set in WWII, and I keep hearing good things about Salt to the Sea. I'm so pleased to see you picked up Soulless! Gail Carriger is one of my top five authors. Her writing is amazing. The characters are beyond quirky, I adore her BFF Ivy, and I can't go a single chapter without laughing. I'm on pins and needles waiting for Imprudence to come out in July. I do feel like I should go back and reread the entire Parasol Protectorate series again since I just finished her Finishing School series. She wrote Parasol first, but Finishing School is set earlier in the time period. That series just ended and the last book let me connect a lot of dots. There were several "O-M-G! Jane Doe is related to Nancy Sue!" moments, thus the reread. If you're looking for a paranormal/fantasy series that involves some Native American mythology you might want to check out Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. It may not be blatant at first, but further into the series things about Mercy's father become more and more mysterious until a single book focuses specifically on the Native American aspect of her heritage. Amazing! There is one particular plot line of the series I'm not very happy about, but I love the rest so much I have pushed past it.

I've been looking at a lot of those books pretty hardcore now. However, I just want to add to the Brandon Mull hype...my aunt got the Fablehaven series for my cousin a few years ago and asked me, in the capacity of an elementary English teacher/author, to read the first book and give my opinions before she passed it along to the girls. I LOVED IT! I really need to just get all of his stuff but I didn't want to start another series by him before I get all of Fablehaven and (re) read it. I hope that you really enjoy it, his writing style is awesomesauce.

The Headmistress of Rosemere does have characters that are intertwined throughout the other books, but it focuses on a different story in each book, so you don't necessarily have to read them in order. The other ones are really good and worth reading if you enjoy that one. I have to admit, I was surprised to see it pop up in your video!

One more for loving Soulless but not generally getting too far with urban fantasy. I believe that Carriger's books have been referred to as "urbane fantasy" which I thought was funny and a good distinction. One of my favorite historical fictions is The Agency by Y.S. Lee. It is set in Victorian London and follows Mary Quinn who is a spy for a pro-woman organization (because no one notices women/maids/etc), and she also deals with her mixed-race Chinese/British heritage in a time and place that being Chinese was not ok. Lee has a PhD in Victorian literature, and I feel like she knows exactly what she's doing with her story. I think they are considered YA (the romance is great but fairly mild), and I highly recommend them!

This might sound a little off topic, because it's a movie not a book but I thought I'd tell you cause of the north Korea books but there's a Korean movie I saw (and currently own on DVD) it's based on the Korean war called 72: Into the Fire. It's about the 72 student soldiers who had to hold down their Base in an old school without the help of their superiors and hold of the North. It is very South Korea biased since it was filmed and practically written by Southern Koreans and I can't solely say how historically accurate it is, I'm going to say a decent amount with a few things thrown in for entertainment purposes but even if it's very loosely true, there's enough to get the picture across. I found heartbreaking and eye opening. I recommend it if you're into that. Anyway, back to the topic the North Korean books you got fascinated me so much, I've just put them in my wish list, same with the two period books.
