We have the exact invasive species in Sweden and we have a "unofficial-holiday" to eat this delicious creatures. There is a Swedish style for cooking "Signal Kräftor"/Crawdads, but the recipe my mother has is. For 60 Crafish 5 liters of water A smal can of brown strong beer. 5 sugar cubes 200 g coarse salt And a bouquet of dill. Add all ingredients except the crayfish in a large cooking pot. When everything starts to boil, add 20 crayfish. Wait until it starts boiling again. When it boils again, add 20 more and continue the process. When this is done boil for 5-8 min, depending on size. When this is done, you need to cool the pot so that it does not prolong the cooking. Preferably by putting it in the sink or the river to cool the crayfish down. And then wait a couple of hours to marinate and then serve. Bon appetit from Sweden.

If you're not already aware of it, you should google "cajun-style crawfish recipe". A bit different from the Swedish style

Traps are great if you are planning on doing other stuff besides crawdad catching but If you are camping the best results I have had is to go to the river right after dark with a bright flashlight and a long set of barbecue tongs. If you want to be really efficient throw a bait bag with chicken(weighed down and attached to a rope) in the shallows right before sunset.

Loved the stylistic approach in this, the intro scene was inviting, visually informative and relaxing. The tools were homey and accessible. And both of you have awesome voices. Possible suggestion to maybe have the camera woman do some soft spoken informative voice overs about how it became invasive and where you could find them? Possibly some light instrumental guitar or strings over your intro walk, like Ventura highway or something. Solid vid, always getting better. 👏🏾

Heya Taku~ we used crawfish all the time growing up from Arkansas to northern California...all we did was to tie decent hunk (about 2 inches or so) chicken, porkfat or anything really ...to some fishing line and thrown it in...wait for about 5 or minutes and slowly pick it back up (if you can see it just wait until the start eating on it for a minute or so) ..the crawdads just hang on to it with their pinchers (greedy i guess) and you can literally just slowly hoist them out and into a bucket...a couple of shakes and they are off..*rinse and repeat* ; ) ...this works especially next to the bank where they tend to hide under ledges like where you first saw that one...no hooks traps or sticks needed...we caught heaps!----thanks a bunch man! always been a fan! started watching you when i lived n Fort Bragg (Mendo) years ago now..

Hey mate, the craws/crays will hold onto bait until they come out of the water, it's easiest to net them just before they break the water surface. They will also swim up to the edge of the bank so a shorter stick would also help you out. Nicely done.

You know what's crazy about crawdads? I grew up catching them in creeks, but never knew this until a couple years ago. My dad bought some land and built a house on it, and there's like 100 acres of farmland. Corn and wheat is farmed on it, depending on the time of year. After the harvest, in the lowest spots, you will see all these little holes in the ground, and they are full of crawdads. And this is nowhere near any creek, river, or natural body of water. Right in the middle of a North Texas corn field. And there are so many of them. I wonder how they get there? But they are delish! Great video!

As long as you don't take them out of the water they will stay on the bait. Take net and scoop them up while they are still under the water. I catch them all the time and use them for an ettoufe', rice with rotell tomatoes and crawdad meat. Makes a lovely side dish or a main entre'. I use anchovies for bait and a split shot. Just tie the line behind the anchovies gill and it won't come off.

advice for future crawdad fishing: make sure you're pulling them slower out of the water. stick might be a bit too long because you're rushing to get it under them. they sense the change on the line and release.
@geecee95625 ай бұрын
Here in Australia as a kid growing up we used to catch blue yabbies on fishing line with liver, wouldn't use a stick though. Just a length of fishing line tied to something on the bank so, you can bring them right to the bank, keep the yabby in the water and net under them like you would fish or squid. 😁 Tight lines.

Long handle net held below the surface to move into place under crawdad as you lift towards the surface works a treat - you win either way if it lets go🙂

When we went crawdad fishing, we would use chicken livers and string. But we had a net that had a long handle on it because the crawdads will jump off sometimes when you lift the food up from the bottom of the creek. They do let go when they get hit the top of the the water. And that's another reason for the long net is so that you can scoop from underneath the crawdads in the water. We didn't get crawdads with big claws. But we didn't keep them. We just took the tails home and left the rest of the crawdad.

We've got signal crayfish here in the UK as well, and yes, they are an invasive species here, too. In fact they've been so detrimental to our waterways and native crayfish species that if you catch them whilst fishing, you are not allowed to return them to the water, even if you were not intending to catch them!
