Question, were you involved at all in the development of the patriot systems? if you were, you might either know or worked with my father. Name is Jim Madewell. He was a fighter pilot, retired in very early 80s and went to work as an engineer then became one of the chief weapons inspectors overseeing the north texas region. He would have to evaluate, test, certify etc all weapons systems that came out of this region, he reported to the dod. Some of the projects he worked on was patriot, javelin/stinger, losat, some agm systems but i cant remember the names. He would be gone at white sands for a week or 2 quite often testing all the stuff. At home it was funny sometimes, he'd be on his work computer reviewing test footage, plans etc and whenever id walk by he would block the screen and be like you saw nothing 😂 He did make sure to emphasize to me that if i ever do happen to see the stuff, I better not go telling my friends about the cool things im working on lol

@@jamesmaddison4546 Sorry man, I have not met him. I was just a lowly PFC/SPC in a PATRIOT firing battery. LOL. We went to White Sands once every 2 years to fire 1 missile. That's it. 1! at (then prices) 1.5 Million a piece, it cost too much to train with live ammo! Happy when I switched to the Field Artillery, then we could make boom booms all day long! Anyhoo, that would be a cool job to have, your old man. I am proud though to be a former PATRIOT Missile Crewmember. I woked in the launcher platoon, and then the Fire Control Platoon. It was a good system then, cant imagine how the upgrades in technology have it today!

This would definately be fun/realistic. BUT irl nobody goes in blind. ELINT, IMINT, and good old fashioned guesswork means you pretty much know where they'll be set up. And by guesswork I mean... known CAP/LIM set of a set of gear, when paired with terrain analysis, gives you a pretty good guess at where they'll be. You won't get a targetable grid, but if you told a tank platoon/attack helo section/flight to look at this grid square and kill the SAMs there? Doable.

Yep, definitely unhealthy to be near active radars. You will notice at airports the radars are positioned as far away from people as possible.
@technicalfool
@technicalfool 2 жыл бұрын
It's unhealthy for the same reason you shouldn't stick your head in a microwave oven and override the safety interlocks. It'll cook you, but it won't cause radiation sickness in the same way as being near a neutron source or similar. Referring to cooking a meal in a microwave oven as "nuking" it is a popular, but incorrect concept. Which doesn't mean it isn't funny and therefore gets used a lot.

Radar uses frequencies of 2.9 to 3.1GHz and 9.2 to 9.5 GHz (10^9 Hz). X rays, (the "mildest" kind of ionizing radiation) have a frequency range of 0.5 to 60 x EHz (10^18Hz aka "Exa-Hertz"), so you were right Cap: the frequency of any radar is way lower than any type of ionizing radiation, by several orders of maginitude.

@jamesmaddison4546

oh god yeah definitely dude. the higher you go on the em spectrum the shorter the wavelength, in turn the more dangerous it becomes. It's because the frequency (therefore its energy) is higher. This enables more cycles to be completed per second

Although I love the video and premise, I just wanted to comment on something relevant. To the best of my knowledge, Russia does not incorporate SEAD into its air strategy. If I'm mistaken and this is an aspect of their air doctrine, then there are a few conclusions we can draw. 1. They don't value it anywhere near as important as US and NATO forces do. 2. They don't practice and train nearly as much, with US F-16s in particular being the designated all-stars of the USAF (at least as far as traditional SEAD/DEAD missions go and 4th-gen assets dedicated to this mission set). 3. Russia has been absolutely horrible in performing this mission within Ukraine. Not only do they lack air superiority after nearly a full year of missions from a massively stronger force in terms of numbers and capability versus Ukraine, but they also haven't even really gotten close to just dominating the air let alone full-blown superiority. I believe we can all confidently agree with the US air assets in a hypothetical war against an enemy equivalent to Ukraine would have followed the same trend as their wars against Iraq by dedicating the opening stages of the conflict to SEAD/DEAD and Tomahawk strikes to knock out enemy radar, comms, SAM sites, AAA sites, and mobile AA units. They would then utilize combined arms tactics and overwhelming air assets to gain air superiority and counter enemy MANPADS. There were MANPADS in Iraq/Afghanistan/Syria (granted much much less than in Ukraine), and the US successfully countered their efficacy as a whole.

Cap, your plane at the end didn't pitch down because you had autopilot still on. Check the autopilot indicator with green LED's on. In order to get the control back, you have to turn the autopilot off completely, otherwise the autopilot will "fight" you. (by autopilot I mean altitude hold, bearing hold, etc.). I don't know why, but it works like this on Russian aircrafts. In F-15C and A-10A you can always override the autopilot by input from the stick. I own only FC3 module and this is what I noticed while playing... and yes, I died because of Russian autopilot too. Just remember, always turn AP off before using the stick.

15:30 Yes, pretty much all radar technology is non-ionizing, the same as a microwave. In fact I see no point in using ionizing radiation - for starters, how'd you make it work cheaply? I mean you can't split atoms with just electricity. Secondly the hazard for everyone involved would be way too high if ionizing radiation was used. I mean these planes would basically be nukes once they crash. The only stuff in the military that uses anything ionizing are nuclear weapons and nuclear powered subs. Remember: nuclear = ionizing. Microwaves (FM, AM), visible light, infrared light, UV light = non-ionizing, aka doesn't need uranium, plutonium, caesium and the likes. Ionizing = rips atoms apart. Non - ionizing = basically harmless to anything smaller than a molecule, with perhaps the main danger being heating, which is how a microwave works.

You are close on how the PATRIOT Battery emplaces. the EPP, ECS, and RADAR are closer together. The ECS Is usually right behind the radar. The EPP is parked to the side of the ECS, The cables from the EPP to power the ECS and the Radar are not that long, thus the small footprint. As for the launchers, they will always be "in front" of the radar down range a bit. The launchers set up in a lazy W formation. They are closer to the ECS if they are running their Fiber Optic cables to communicate, or can extend a bit more down range if using SINCGARS ASIP encrypted.

I listened to Animarchy's interview of Habitual Linecrosser, a Patriot Instructor, and I think that these Patriots are definitely set up with underestimations. I know that a lot is classified (from what I gathered, Patriot should be able to counteract jamming), but the range is at least between 20 and 100 miles (20 miles due to the earths curvature, at least 100, as Habitual Linecrosser had to look up whether the true range was unclassified or not). He had to hold back so many times about what he wanted to say, because it wasn't on Wikipedia (thus still classified), that I believe that Patriot is so advanced that this attack probably wouldn't have gone so easily.

Hard UV is where radiation starts to ionise stuff, so yes, radar systems are well below ionising wavelengths. They're varying degrees of microwave. Now if you had a UVC LIDAR, that might be different, but that would also be moderately insane. If someone made an X ray or Gamma ray radar, that would be ionising, but also probably bonkers. (Fun fact: The modern microwave oven has its roots in radar research, with the possibly apocryphal tale of an engineer noticing the chocolate bar in his pocket melting near a particularly beefy radar antenna.)

RADAR, like any other EM radiation, including light, is photons. Only high frequency radiation (like X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays) is an ionizing risk. Radiation with a lower frequency than visible light (like TV and radio) is not ionizing, but does contain a great deal of energy and can cook nearby objects, like a microwave oven.

Radar is indeed non-ionizing radiation. It's basically just radio waves. Non-ionizing means that the photons done have enough energy to create ions, which are atoms that have gained or lost an electron. They also don't have energy to break the bonds in your DNA, which means they can't cause mutations which might lead to cancer.

Radar IS non ionizing radiation. 15:40 visible light and longer wavelengths are non ionizing. Ultraviolet and shorter wave wavelengths ARE ionizing. Basically, as per Einstein’s first noble prize, each photon has to have more energy than the binding energy of an outer electron.

Closest case I have heard of relating to "radar" damage was the Norwegian KNM "Kvikk" case back in the 90s. Basically children of someone that had served on the boat showed genetic damage and birth defects in their children and they had both served on the same ship. Of course, while that boat was scrapped before they could do reconstruction of it, the current biggest culprit that is suspected was the paint. Since during its service, it was a ship that had a lot of camo paint experimentation going on, which of course contained a nice toxic cocktail including lots of mercury to mention one of them. Naturally painted by the crew, so that was a logical exposure.

The way ionizing radiation works is that the amount doesn't matter it's the frequency that does. So you could get hit by an enormous amount of "radiation" (like we do all the time from space and the sun) and unless it is higher than the frequency needed to ionize human atoms, it won't have any effect on your body.

14:56: There's also a galley on the other side. 15:38: Non-ionizing. They use microwaves, which are on the complete opposite end of the electromagnetic spectrum from ionizing radiation. Visible light is more energetic, per photon, than microwaves. That being said, radars put out a ton of photons that, while harmless individually, are hazardous in large doses. They won't damage your DNA, but every watt of RF energy that gets absorbed by your body has to go somewhere- and that's into heat. So you won't get any genetic mutations, but you will be cooked alive. 17:17: Photons. Neutrons are massive and, by definition, can not move at the speed of light. Thanks to mass energy equivalence, a massive object (neutron) would need infinite energy to move at the speed of light. Neutrons are not force carrier particles for electromagnetic radiation. Instead, they are unstable subatomic particles (half life of ~15m when free of nucleus) that can transmute a stable isotope into a radioactive one.

Great vid! There is a AN/FPS-132 (UEWR) radar in Taiwan, I worked on it (constr) it's on Google maps (it's a copy of the site in Thule, Greenland). I'd like to see a Chinese Campaign simulation of some sort, with that added in. Talking to the radar techs, they can see and ID tanks (ground, line of sight) at 300 miles, no info on air targets (OPSEC), but it tracks satellites, any ballistic missiles. Talking to the Taiwanese guys on the jobsite (including mil folks) that would be the first target hit, at the opening of hostilities. There were alarm sirens and strobes, on the roof of the support buildings, you had 1 minute to get off the roof, or you would be toasted to a crisp, in a few sec, from the waste up, if you were there when they switched it on.

About that huge tail Su-34 has I was told some years ago by people who actually fly this thing, initially Su-34 was planned to have an ASW capability (or at least there should have been an ASW variant which was developed first) and house a magnetometer in there in order to locate submarines, but this idea was scrapped when the plane was almost complete. So they have decided to use this space to shove in as much chaff as possible, so yeah, now it houses a chute and tons of chaff. Its one of the reasons why this plane is nicknamed "duck" by the pilots (a male duck, to be precise "селезень", because in Russian there are separate words for a female and a male duck). This story about magnetometer might just be a myth, was not able to find any confirmation, in Russian or English.

Russia has already taken out 75-85% of Ukrainian AD (and it's a much more advanced AD). Meanwhile the defensive weapons wasted cost 5 times as much and the very important target is destroyed as well. I guess its very cost effective if Russia has the equipment to pull it through. It might not work out so easily in real life or Russia might not want to risk the pilots for a target that might not realy worth it. Even if cruise missiles cost more, they are 100% safe to use. A kalibr is only 900k per missile and they are latest tech land attack cruise missiles, realy cant see a reason why not to use cruise missiles even if some patriots are sent (I think 2 batteries are about to be sent).

But it can be bad for you or feel uncomfortable as it's heating up whatever it passes through, so they turn it off on the ground (and i presume a2a refueling too) to not microwave the ground/tanker crew. Even devices like two-way radios, cell phones and cell towers, wifi access points will do this. There are regulatory limits to body absorption as measured from a cellphone and a lot of wifi access points and wireless routers come with compliance booklets warning to turn the device off before coming closer than around 25-30cm to it. Also some of you might have seen a picture of one or more cats on a starlink dish, they just like the warmth of a transmitter powerful enough to be understood by a receiver in orbit
