Last week's south swell was the biggest early season Southern Hemi to hit California since 2012. No, this is not just a compelling KZbin title. We know this because we have a digital filing cabinet somewhere in the basement that contains about 40 years of data of swells hitting coastlines all over the world. Which, to be fair, can be quite useful with coming up with compelling KZbin title.
That said, south swells are notoriously selectively good in California. Sounds good on paper, sure, but really, there's only a handful of spots that really benefit. The trifecta of Lowers, Wedge and Malibu for starters. This particular swell was far enough north to offer up some fine surf in Santa Cruz as well. All of which are featured, in fine form, in the vid above.
As for the title? Well, Surfline's SoCal based forecaster Schaler Perry kinda nailed it. "When that storm system, that fetch, stayed over the developing seas we get a little more juice out of the same squeeze," he said. "Wasn't the first swell of the year but it was the proper season opener that got spots across the states into pretty solid Southern Hemisphere surf."
Here's to a fruitful summer. Stay tuned for our Southern Hemisphere Outlook, coming very soon.
