My favorite ancient death belongs to Mithridates the great. He was a king who had a mini empire around the Black Sea, but was also incredibly paranoid that he’s would be assassinated by poison. He proceeded to do what anyone else would do on hard times and ingested poison. Only small amounts at first but amp up the amount as he went along, eventually becoming immune to most poisons. When the Roman’s were conquering his land, he tried to go out with as much dignity as possible and tried to poison himself. The only issue was that he was immune so that didn’t work. So he had his friend stab him and he promptly kicked the bucket. Mithridates died as he lived, not dying from poison.
@codysurfer8232
@codysurfer8232 Жыл бұрын
What's also funny is that the reason he was so paranoid about poisoning is that his father died due to being poisoned, but the poison used to kill his father is one of the poisons people can't build an immunity to, so if he had tried to copy his dad it would've worked

Thanks for mentioning Mithridates~ He's one of my favourite Mediterranean Bronze-age rulers and I feel like he isn't galked about enough, even if we get the word "Mithridatism" from him (not a common word in the daily vernacular maybe, but videogames like Grounded still use it)

Draco's big deal was that one of his laws was that all the laws had to be posted in public where anyone could read them. Apparently nobody had thought of doing that before and the laws were mostly an oral tradition among the high class. Big problem for anyone else accused of breaking them since they literally couldn't know what the laws even were.

also he got the death wrong...The Suda chronicles a folkloric story of his death in the Aeginetan theatre:[3] in a traditional ancient Greek show of approval, his supporters "threw so many hats and shirts and cloaks on his head that he suffocated, and was buried in that same theatre".[4] The truth about his death is still unclear, but it is known that Draco was driven out of Athens by the Athenians to the neighbouring island of Aegina, where he spent the remainder of his life" . the whole coat thing seemed obviously BS.

Qin Shi Huang also asked to be buried in a Tomb with a miniature of his empire with mercury rivers along with his terracotta soldiers to keep him safe in the afterlife. He was originally sold on the mercury idea by his royal advisors and doctors. The man asked for his tomb to be that way mostly because his mind is heavily poisoned by the mercury he constantly drunk everyday to live forever. Honestly, I blame the royal advisors for that one. Mostly because it's likely a plot to quicken his death so his second son could take the throne without too much of a hassle.

One of the weirdest parts about Pythagoras was that he had enemies because Greeks had cults around stuff like math concepts. That hypotenuse part of Pythagorean theorem is the square root of 2 which is irrational, and there was a cult that believed that specific piece of information was heretical. Surprisingly the friend didn’t get charged with murder since it was clearly a freak accident, but he did get charged with petty theft for pocketing the cell phone and leaving what he thought was his buddy faking injury at the dining table the two of them were sitting at.

More interestingly about Emperor Qing is that they think they know where his tomb is but it's suspected to have traps so no one's really ever bothered. I think there was an old text claiming he was surrounded by a river of mercury, which no one can confirm but there are high levels of mecury around his suspected tomb... at least the last I heard :P

Horrible Histories says Heraclitus died in the cow manure but didn’t get devoured by dogs. He just died of heat stroke. He was trying to sweat out all the fluid buildup in his legs.
