I cannot ever get enough of this song. Hugh's brilliance for storytelling is only matched with his ability to make beautiful music. He will go down in history as once of the best in the field

This specific performance of this song is my favourite! I love this song. We lost a musical genius. RIP to the Greatest.

My band did an opening set for Hugh's band on February 12, a day after Nelson was freed from prison. Hugh told us that as soon he was finished he was getting on the bus, going directly to the airport, flying directly to New York, and meting his dear friend for the fist time in 27 years. He did a great show!

Bra Hugh' songs are not just great performances but deliveries of our oral history of Southern Africa. So much of what he sings takes me back to those early years 1950's - 1960's - until today ... of our country's troubled past - a past filled with angst and suffering and tears and deaths - many-many deaths - too many deaths. owen_mshengu_sharif

I was there .I walked bare foot form hyde park to Clapham their must have been over 1 million of us that day but the police said 250000. long live freedom in the world. I also have the 12" recording of this .

Fantastic memories.. me and a friend hitch hiked from Scunthorpe to this and yes I remember it was more likely 250,000. The Police and The Media wanted to downplay the support as the present Tory government was full of supporters of the apartheid regime..

A truly amazing "Man" and artist, I first heard "Stimela" in the mid 80's and loved it from the start. I listened to it so much I could sing it in it's original language, phonetically of course.

he had many admirers of his african classical music in london. saw him many times. twice at ronnie scotts. chatting together during the intermission in the bar. a lovely man. amused all w with his teasing of one of his musician who was excitedly dancing in ronnies. hugh called him "the choreographer" to much amusement. he is "free" with nelson mandela now. RIP.

I saw Hugh perform this song the night Nelson was released from prison. Hugh explained at the close of the show he and Nelson were meeting in New York the next morning. Hugh and Nelson were dear friends and had not seen each other for 26 years. When Nelson was imprisoned, Hugh exiled himself from South Africa. Nelson was the leader of the anti apartheid movement, and Hugh was the most internationally renowned South African musician. That show was incredible music with a beautiful messwage.

My FAVORITE Hugh Masekela piece. Its music with a message with a sexy groove on top of that. By sexy I don't mean sexual, but soulful. I love it. Much much much musical, social, and cultural value.

He performed this song in Milano many years ago, in a concert where he was supporting Paul Simon. Miriam Makeba (his wife) was the other supporter. At the end of the song I stood up and clapped and screamed for 10 minutes. I was the only one standing up in the whole arena, but I couldn't care less. This song outperformed by far all other songs performed that night. Listening to it again still sends shivers down my spine. There's not enough stars in the Milky Way to rate this song.
