Love the video, I have been looking forward to this review. A bit of friendly critique though, I was disappointed that you didn't show the colors of the tablet at all. For a screen I would say it's really important. The B&W image is nice, but I miss seeing some colors, or color comparisons. You also didn't show the stand at all, which is not a big deal, but I would have liked to see it, especially at the lower angles.

Hi Brad, I would suggest you to dive deeper on color accuracy and color drawings when testing Wacom alternatives. It is the major drawback that I see people talking on forums and almost any review talks about that. Since you have an iMac, it easier to compare how colors look when they are side by side with a great monitor. Thanks!

You should get an XRite or a Spyder color calibrator. The lower level ones are just for monitor calibration and the higher cost ones are for monitor and printer calibration. They really aren’t hard to use and once you start calibrating you’ll be so happy to see more consistency across screens. It saves you going back later to correct color problems when you switch your graphic from one platform to another. Also be aware that the brightness of your device skews how you perceive the color. Also Photographers like higher color gamets ( range of color i.e ADOBE RGB or other higher ranges) for editing but often have to reduce to sRGB for printing . I don’t do animation so I only suppose that 120% sRGB will give you suitable color for most animation to be viewed on screen as that was a standard developed for screens. This is the most basic of basic info. Both of those companies have tons of good info on the web & KZbin.

Honestly, yes. The color gamut from the previous gen of huion tablet limited the color contrast and other things with their tablets, and as someone who still uses the GT-191, it's noticeable. If the gamut is smaller than the one on your main monitor, it'll be noticeable, and you won't be able to make it match completely no matter how much you try. You can get close, but I've never been able to match it 100 percent even with a color calibrator. It's annoying. Apparently it also has something to do with the tablet's compatibility with certain GPU's, and you have to tweak settings on your graphics settings in order utilize what you have properly. Thankfully these new monitors increased its gamut size and so it's definitely better than it was before, but I imagine Huion had to still cut corners for it to have the price tag it has.

Aside from value for money, cheaper alternatives cannot equate what premium products can do in quality and accuracy. And it is expected. As long as they're not far off, slight shift in measurements is not a game changer for those with poverty issues. Premium tools are for those who can afford to have one. What hurts is when premium products are discovered with major drawbacks or defects. e.g. Microsoft Surface Pro bulging battery that pushes the screen from its frame, etc.

Longtime professional animator here. After about 15 years using a Wacom cintiq I recently upgraded to this tablet. Overall I am really impressed with it. The drawing experience is superb and the colours are actually better than my previous cintiq 21ux. My biggest issue, (which is fairly minor) is that on a Wacom I'm pretty sure the tilt data from the pen is incorporated into calculating parallax / the cursor position on the screen. (Imagine the pen like a laser pointer) On the kamvas, this is not the case. The cursor remains in the same place irrespective of the pen tilt. It's a nuance that I dearly miss. Perhaps there's a work around?

you can try to calibrate the tablet again or update the driver. coz it seem like a driver issue and if not you can contact Huion for that and will send youa fix. also you are the first to mention this than the other reviews and people who own it so i think it is the driver.

its not high. its 22 inch with laminated screen and High RGB colors + shortcut key on the side. but the 16 pro is better you should have gone for that.
@3polygons4 жыл бұрын
I instead recommend the 22, BY FAR, even if is coarser pixels. Is NOT a key problem for production work. Real state, not working zoomed in all the time (global view of the composition at all times), surface to work on complex illustrations (and ease for the eye and eyesight), possibility of a more relaxed pose for long hours, ability to paint from shoulder or elbow for firm line/curves while inking, all that is more important. The "seeing the pixels" is more of an OCD thing. And often caused by people working WAY too close to the screen, which will deteriorate your eyesight real quick, if not positioning yourself (and your back and neck) correctly. Of course, for same reasons, a 16 much better than a 13" tablet, a 12" Surface, or the 12,9" iPad Pro, if those are the options at all possible instead of the 22. Which they aren't as the 22R is 700 euros and the Kanvas Pro 22 2019 , 770. Even the 22E is 600 euros. Surely cheaper in Amazon US and each brand's own local online sites. Is not as it's that far from the 16 versions. Save a few months more and that's it, IMO...

I have to admit, I was kinda looking forward to a little more in depth review of the hardware. I decided to upgrade my ASUS PT201Q and dropped the money for the Artist Display 22E Pro from XP Pen instead of my original plan to hold out for this or the updated 22E Pro (which I presume will inevitably arrive at some point). I wanted to see what I was missing out on by going with the current model. Not much apparently. Aside from the bonded display, color space, touch bar and the cable free pen, you could have been describing the 22E pro. What I didn't see, what I thought you would touch upon, are the number of same or similar sized product being sold for less than half the price of this unit. As I type this the XP Pen Artist 22E Pro is being sold for $399 that a 10% off coupon can be applied to at check out so it becomes even cheaper. Does the Huion really offer enough to justify that price difference? I don't know, it just seems like every Cintiq alternative review can be summed up by the phrase "It's fine but it's not a Wacom" and the ultimate test for determining whether or not a company has botched their release is if it produces an effect that is actually billed as a feature in the Rebelle software. I'm just at a loss to figure out why with all this time and all this hardware and with all these reviews from so many users we still can't answer the simple question of whether a tablet is worthy *without* mentioning that it isn't a Wacom. That's usually the given that drives people to watch these reviews in the first place. Isn't it?

How is the color calibration on the 22E Pro? I was using Astropad on my iPad but did not like the continuous disconnections. Now I am considering the XP Pen 22E or 15.6 Pro. @@edgaribarria I haven't done an official color correction on it yet. I plan on getting a Spyder when I can. While it's in sRGB mode, the whites are too blue out of the box. I'm currently researching affordable color accurate monitors.

Reviewers compair other tablets to Wacom simply for the reason you stated If he ended the review with "it's good" as opposed too "it's good but it isn't Wacom" then people who are used to getting Wacom products will expect it an equivalent performance. An alternative to a graphic tablet displays, are products like the Surface Studio which have a larger screen, more accurate colors, use a more advanced lamination technology getting the tip closer to the image, and doesn't suffer from the edge tracking issues like this device. These edge and accuracy issues are also a problem with Wacom and other active stylus technologies. Look for updates to the Surface Studio that will be modular - rumors are still standing that a Surface Studio Screen will be available as a tablet/display to use with existing systems instead of being an all-in-one computer.

When asked about how they claim a paper like feel when there is not hint of friction on the drawing surface, well - now they tell me that is subjective... STILL, there is something about this Kamvas... They are trying, they are improving so I'm going to stick with it a bit longer and probably hold on to it. Tilt would be nice, better drivers too. A bit fed up as I bought the previous version last month. I wouldn’t mind so much but according to the specs all 20 express keys are now independently programmable, something that isn’t retrofitted to the older versions. Presumably this is a “selling point” for the new version, which is a bit annoying as it is probably something controlled by the drivers rather than the hardware.

That’s true! I think that there could def. be strides towards that area, even if it end up just being a 16 inch tablet. how is this today in comparison to the 2022 version? There's a Halloween sale going on for 2 days and it says the Kamvas Pro 22 (2019) version is on sale for 499 Euros. Is it worth it? Better 2022 versions out there? I was initially wanting to get a 16 version for my tiny desk space but this deal is making me wonder if I could get a wall mount for it (table mount isn't an option with my table type) What's the best tablet I could get from 16-22 inches within the 500 € range in 2022? The drawing feel is most important to me. I love the feeling, grip and sound of using a pencil more than anything and want sure what would be right for me. Sorry, lots of questions. if you can just come back to me on it it's a good deal or warn me of what I'd need to deal with compared to newer versions/brands in 2022, that would be great! Thanks :)

Hey Brad, great content. I was hoping you could answer a quick question. I’m thinking of buying this, is the cost difference worth it over the equivalent sized xp-pen? I’m keen on the larger size due to using it as a second monitor.
@deuswulf61935 жыл бұрын
XP Pen has worse color accuracy, slower response time and is somewhat older tech as far as these chinese alternatives are concerned. Its up to you if you think that the price increase is worth it. Alternatively, you could spend the same amount for the 20 inch 2019 version of Huion's display (non pro version) and get a higher color range, but at the cost of response rate. I think you would be better off just going for a cheaper laminated 16 inch version of Huion or XP Pen's tablets, then wait till the come out with something nicer for the bigger screens. Their 16 inch tablets seem to be where all their "r&d" (half joking) is going into these days. Also note that the bigger the screen size you go, the more pixelated it will look due to the 1920x1080 resolution. You might be better served going smaller for now, at least until they can pump out some higher resolution displays.

@@deuswulf6193 in what ways? And what would you say is better? We know that the 16 has better quality, what about the parallax?
@deuswulf61935 жыл бұрын
@@polymerhorse5309 The 22inch version (2019) has a much much lower response rate. High response rates cause ghosting when you move objects around on the screen or make fast strokes. Low response rates update quicker. The 22 has a 8ms response rate where as the 16 and 20 inch have a 24ms response rate. I have the 16 inch and it is quite noticeable. I would not use the display for animation or anything else that moves. Parallax does exist on these Huions but it is not as bad as it used to be. There are two kinds of parallax, the kind that you notice due to the gap between the LCD and the surface of the tablet, and the kind that results in drifting around the corners. The first is great, your pen feels like it is touching the LCD directly. The second does show a slight drift around the edges but its so minor few may even notice it. I have found that I have to move the pen away and put it back to "re-calibrate" its location a bit. I think a large part of that has to do with the pen tilt feature, which I hate tbh, as the tablets pick up where the sensor is, not the tip of the pen itself. Over all though these are very very good Cintiq alternatives. I probably won't go back to using cintiqs (assuming I have to buy them) as the pen behavior is close enough to what Wacom offers.

Thanks for yet another good review, Brad! One thing I'm missing from your reviews, that I think are important, are some test of shading. Like, how well can you simulate a graphite pencil? Of course, that depends on the software and the brush that you're using, but it also tells a lot about the pen whether or not you can lay down consistent and subtle tones. It's something that can be really frustrating when you go really nice and smooth, yet you get you get blotchy and uneven tones. Again, it can be difficult to separate the hardware from the software here, but perhaps you could add a test with something like Photoshop and Sketchbook or somesuch thing? Anyhow, thanks again for a good review and keep up the good work! You're awesome!
@thebradcolbow5 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. I don't use much shading, I'll have to look into some of the pencil brushes.
@tqracing5 жыл бұрын
@@thebradcolbow Different styles of course. I personally like to do more traditional stuff, and that can really show off some of the weaknesses with some tablets. And software... for example, I love Procreate on my iPad Pro but in terms of drawing Sketchbook Pro is much better. And different tablets are of course better or worse when it comes to drawing. Not just line quality, but also how in terms of how smooth your shading is going to be. For me, that's probably the biggest factor of them all. Well, aside from touch input where you can zoom and rotate the canvas.

I have a Wacom 13HD and the graininess does kill me. The texture on the screen is nice, but it's not worth it for the hit to the image. I assume all Wacoms have the graininess due to the layer they put on for that paper-like feel? If so, I may try switching to a tablet.

I personally own a Huion product (gt 191 v1) and I'd recommend anyone to just be patient and wait til they have enough cash for a wacom, even for the cheapest one (16inch). The experience with huion is just not rewarding enough and I wish I knew that before I bought one, if you're short on cash just go with the wacom bamboo for the meantime, just feel the wacom pens are really far superior to their counterparts, I only use my huion now as secondary monitor, the reflective screen and slow response time gave a bit of headache and eye stress, and nope, the matte screen protector that comes with it doesn't help, it degrades the color too much to be even useful plus its a hassle to install.

Does anyone know if there's any place or way to try out pen displays before you buy them? I get why they can't exactly have them up in your average Best Buy or wherever, but I honestly think the only way to really know the differences in pressure and pens and such is probably to actually hold them in your hands and use them. Do you just have to know a person who has one or who works at a studio that has them? Or is there a secret demo room somewhere?

@3polygons4 жыл бұрын
@@Page157 - 22R Has a probably a wider color range than the kanvas pro 22 2019. XP-Pen 22R is around 90% Adobe RGB. That's.. .VERY wide range for an alternative. Is the strongest point of the 22R. - Huion Kanvas Pro 22 (2019) , careful to not get the pro, but the pro (2019) is LAMINATED. A lot less parallax, and having used an old cintiq, I do know the huge problem that thing is. Almost as bad as getting sth smaller than 22 inches. - Kanvas Pro 22 (2019)... I found no data on their support of Adober RGB color space. Only 120% of sRGB color space. While this is meaningless (and incorrect by itself, but is a marketing trick) , it typically means that is surely having a nice support of Adobe RGB than usual. For me, the laminated thing is very important, also as I have a semi pro monitor, but which doesn't either reach full 100% Adobe RGB. So, kind of would calibrate both similarly with my calibrator. As many online POD print companies mainly produce good results just using full sRGB screens... I'm "kind of" (not happy, tho) OK-ish with it... Meaning.. I can deal with it, even if not ideal: I'd go for the purchase, give the fact that the next step I'd go for is a 1700 $ for a refurbished Cintiq Pro 24 (NOT a 22 HD!!!, neither a Cintiq 22 latest, as both are merely sRGB, and non laminated, big parallax), as the 24 Pro yeah, that one is laminated, 99% Adobe RGB, is a thing from heavens....But is almost 2x the cost of a nice editing PC machine ! So... While is... "fine"... to get a 22R... I'm lately more inclined for Kanvas Pro 22 (2019). I'm finding there's no way to get it (and been so for a while) the 22R on Amazon. But seems now XP-PEN has sites for severalcountries. Use the site for your local country at xp-pen.com !! And buy from that xp-pen's site store. I've seen 22R is at 700 euros. And the Huion Kanvas Pro 22 (2019) at 776 euros. For me, it's worth it, the difference, for a laminated screen. Even if I like more the data I have about the color range on the 22R. While we're at it... A cintiq 22 is a color accurate screen (that I recommend to color calibrate by hardware, anyway, like with all tablets!), having only sRGB support, but the build quality and other cool things of a Wacom device are in it, even if it's eons away from a Cintiq Pro. But is 1k $... With the mentioned Huion.... maybe even the 22R... is less and less of a point... I mean... .... is 600 euros for the 22E (the 22E IS on Amazon), 700 the 22R , 770 the Kanvas pro 22( 2019) ... versus a well built, yet less featured, non laminated Cintiq non-pro 22.... for around 1k euros..... Hmmmm. Kanvas Pro 22 (2019) it is, IMO. But for classics, I still recommend the XP-PEN Deco Pro Medium and Deco 03 (130$ and 84$) over Huion alternatives. And for ALL, including the cintiq a colormunki or the like colorimeter, a hardware color calibrator. To not get crazy with the color of your illustrations once you export it for some purpose (printing, web, etc).
