Salman is a funny one. He started out a decent enough actor/dancer, and some of his earlier stuff has great rewatchability value. But by the late 90s-early 00s he started caring less and less until, eventually, just stopped putting the effort in.

The movie is eerily similar to ( and per a lot of people based on ) the bengali novel called "Na Hanyate" by Maitreyi Devi. It's based on true events between Maitreyi Devi and her father's romanian student Mircea Eliade. Mircea wrote his version of things in Romanian and later translated to French called "La Nuit Bengali". Maitreyi then wrote and published her version of events. There is a 1988 movie called Bengali Nights starring Hugh Grant and Supriya Pathak , along with Soumitrya Chatterjee, Shabana Azmi and John Hurt.

The Italy portion of the film was actually shot in Budapest, Hungary. I assume to cut costs. And I was cringing in anticipation for Korbin to see some Oscar level white acting in this 😂😂 This movie was deffo a product of it’s time as some of the abuse was a bit more acceptable in the late 90’s.

Who even recommended this movie to them? This is too much of an cultural immersion for them 😄😄 As you can see from the movie that the Indian society is depicted as rather conservative, which in several instances is enraging our friends here, which they nicely cover up with their charming smiles and laughs. Even I used to always think that I wish Indians were a little more progressive and then I started watching shows like Judge Judy and other similar shows covering teenage pregnancies, women having so many partners that they needed DNA tests to determine the Dad, parents leaving their kids in childcare and not showing up for months to fetch them, daughters suing their dads for childcare expenses etc. And now I am not so sure if I want to be progressive. I am on the fence unable to move in either direction 😅

I don't think its about emotions but more about the fact that this movie doesn't really stand the test of times. As Indians, topics of discussions like marital r8pe and freedom for choosing one's partner are very recent for us so we still understand where these character's actions (however despicable, now that i'm seeing it again) are coming from. I think the next generation of Indians would react to this movie in a very similar way as them because of the same mindset disconnect. And that isn't really bad, it's actually a step in right direction.
