Get the Katz-Moses Magnetic Dovetail Jig: lddy.no/stiz
In this woodworking project video I build and setup up a humidor. Made from Spanish cedar, maple burl veneer and ebony inlay. Rabbet joinery on the main case, I then inset ½” plywood and flush trimmed everything up. Then, using vacuum press bags I got from Amazon, I attached the veneer. I show how to join pieces of veneer and glue them on using regular Titebond 2. I then cut ¼” grooves around the whole box and inlaid ebony using ca glue and Titebond 2. Finally I flushed trimmed everything up, rounded the corners, put in the Spanish cedar liner and put on the Brusso hinges, feet, and brass lift. The finish is a gloss lacquer I got from Woodcraft. All the tools I used are linked below. At the end of the video I talk about the trials and tribulations I had building this as well as how to setup a humidor. Please subscribe, comment and like. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video man! Loved it. Only tip I would offer: when you separate the lid from the box, it can be mated better. Best technique I've used is gluing down 4 pieces of sandpaper to a workbench, then sand the top of the box and bottom of the lid. This produces perfectly flat edges. It will make the seam look much more sharp. Loved watching the veneer. Nice to see a new technique.

Glad to see you kept the interior cedar unfinished!! You don’t want your cigars marinating in chemically coated wood!! My 26 year old humidor I built out of Padouk, Wenge & Spanish Cedar keep my cigars in perfect condition. A few years ago I smoked the last of my Cuban cigars (a legal gift from a friend) , it was in my humidor for14 years.

Hi Jonathan, nice box. In guitar making we don't use superglue when gluing wooden binding as it's not as strong a joint as wood glue. What I do is apply a couple of coats of shellac on 2" all around my edges. I even do this before cutting my channel as I believe it helps with getting a crisp line. Then I attach the binding with reinforced tape (tape with fiberglass in it so it's super strong) by pulling really hard. I alternate the direction of the pulling to get an even distribution of the clamping force. When I remove the tape, i'm super careful to roll it over itself so I don't tear out anything, even though the shellac is doing a good job preventing that. That method is escpecially effective since we have curves on the guitar and we need the binding material to conform to these curves. Anyway, good job, have a good smoke !.

I love the humidor! I switched from sponge to beads then from beads to Boveda packs for my humidor a few years ago. They are great because they provide two way control so you don't have to baby sit your humidor as much. Big humidors can benefit from an active humidity system but for small desktop units, Boveda packs work really well.

Excellent technique and skill, thanks for sharing! A tip for viewers if your outer box material is not cedar. You should consider applying a poly to the inside of the box before installing the cedar liner to prevent wood movement due to the high humidity inside the humidor. Then sand away areas for the glue to adhere the cedar. It's not really necessary here because you used cedar for outer box, but for any other material, its very important. Again, fantastic video!

Thanks so much bud. I really appreciate the kind words. To be fair, this video took about 1200 dollars to produce (which is higher than usual because of the piece I made). I can completely understand why guys do sponsorships and don't fault them at all. I am very passionate about this and woodworking but if I didn't sell my dovetail jig, have affiliate links and other sources of revenue, it would be financially impossible to produce this content. I am luckier than most to have a popular product which allows me to produce videos like this.

I found your videos when you teamed up with the “stay passionate and make something “ guy when you were doing dovetails using your new jig. I smoke cigars regularly and I can’t wait to try this project!! Maple curl is my favorite too. And I have several board feet of mahogany for a special project like this. Since I’m prior Navy, I bought a brass porthole to center on the lid (maybe to heavy to use idk ) but awesome, I now have a reference for veneers as I haven’t done that either. Lol. Love the music in between long shots and your production is awesome too.

This was a great video. I love your videos. Your a really good teacher. As an old veneer guy. The most critical thing is the core or underpayment. The material you glue the veneer to. It has to be dead flat. If you have any bumps or high spots you will have burn through. Holes in your veneer. No you didn’t sand it wrong you just took off the high spot which was higher than the thickness of the veneer. .003. Thick veneer is about the thickness of a beard hair. Hope that made sense.

Excellent work and video! Inspired me to do my own! I prefer to essentially "dry box" my cigars so I can save on the hygrometer but I'd love to play with veneering. The particle board boxes on Amazon are just insulting when you look at how they're constructed. Would rather have the experience and joy of making my own than buying a humidor for $200+. Thank you for sharing this experience! Enjoy your next cigar thoroughly brother!

Outside the humidor is 40% humidity 🤪. I loved every moment of the weather in SoCal over the history of my time in the Corps, but I assure you the weather is like no other. For example it’s almost always between 68-92% humidity where I live so regulative type materials are a must for moisture release absorption in humidors here with refrigeration to actually remove humidity also being more frequently encountered than you’d suspect. Not withstanding, you’re exactly right on the humidity considerations you made. You know I’m just messing with you otherwise. Rock on, No Zero Days my brother!

40% humidity!... Lol, you crack me up! The only time we see 40% humidity is dead Winter with the heat on high.. Try 85-99% humidity most of the time here in Florida. I wish we had 40%....

Hey K-M, very nice build! One thing I love about Spanish cedar is it’s spicy smell. It’s wonderful. One suggestion: you may want to consider wearing a respirator with chemical cartridges when spraying lacquer. It looked like you were wearing a dust mask? Thanks!

Working with wood for years when it came to finishing with gloss or lacquer was to use compressed air to blow the dust off between coats and sanding. we would only do 2 coats and it would always be a glass finish

I want to build a black walnut cigar box (not a full blown hubidor). I was thinking dovetails for the sides and just doing a panel 1/4 from the top and bottom of some 1/4 inch maple. This project might be a lot for me at this stage but loved watching you work.

Bro, loving your work & your vids! Truely impeccable! I’m not up to speed with laminating, is there a reason you can’t just clamp the laminate instead of using the vac bags & everything that comes with it?

This is a beautiful box. I am curious, did you veneer over solid wood for the four sides of the box?

Spanish cedar is favored because it imparts a desirable flavor to your cigars therefore the interior of humidors are never sealed.

beautiful humidor...but you gotta protect your lungs. A dust mask isn't sufficient for spraying lacquer...get a decent vapor absorbing mask. They may not be as comfortable, but it'll keep you making great content for a lot longer!

That’s a great project. I’ve never tried veneer but what you did seems to be doable. Perhaps I’ll try it sometime in the not to distant future. Since I don’t smoke I’ll have to try it on something else.

First off, I really enjoyed the longer format video that brought us along the journey from wood selection all the way to the detailed wrap up talk at the end. -- what was the point of the business card trick when cutting miters at the stop block ? Personally I'd like to see a few more technical tips and tricks along the way, good enertainment and learning along the way. Thanks.

Great video of a great project. One correction, though. The propylene glycol is hygroscopic and is used with distilled water in the humidifier to stabilize the humidity. It is not for disinfecting or killing fungus or creepie crawlies.
