Is the Hummer EV the best electric truck on the market for towing? We did a 30 mile towing test to find out just how far it can go. ⇟⇟⇟MORE BELOW⇟⇟⇟

As you mention, recharging a 200+ kWh pack takes a long time. I think trucks will need an 800V architecture. Thanks for this test!
@jrsheets
@jrsheets 9 ай бұрын
The Hummer EV has 800V charging capabilities. It essentially has two 400V packs that normally run in parallel. When charging at an 800V capable charger, it switches into series. That is how it gets to its 350kW peak charge rates.

It will be awesome if a company will make a range extender that sits in the bed for when towing heavy.

Even if you could get that range, could you get the children to sit still that long? I think the battery is too big for efficient charging towing. Only time will tell though. Can't wait to see the road trip proving this. Great video, thanks

Most of the time the kids wouldn’t make it that long…but it would sure be great to be able to go that far if we were in an area where fast chargers were further than 100-130 miles apart.

Surprising results on the efficiency! I'd be REALLY curious to see how the Hummer does towing our Basecamp. 🙂 Also will be curious to see how fast you are able to charge when you are able to find working chargers - are the EA chargers in Lincoln still 'broken'?

@@AllElectricFamily It sort of makes sense. Towing is all about aero. The weight doesn't really matter when you go at a constant speed. And the airstream is the common (worst) aero component. Aero wise The Hummer looks a lot like the Airstream even without it connected, so doesn't make that much difference when it gets attached. I's sure a stiff crosswind will change that). I think all of a sudden that huge battery pack on the Hummer can come in very handy when towing...

An EV today that can average ≥ 200 miles per charge while towing seems to be reasonable, as an EV early towing adopter. That’s why we are waiting for the R1T and quad motor and max battery pack. We plan to tow a 5000 lb GVWR trailer. Wish our trailer was of such a design that we could add some drag reduction. Our current tow vehicle is a MB Sprinter 2500 passenger van, 144” WB, tall roof.

This did surprise me 1.1Kw/h mostly level reasonable temperature, with out wind as a factor made a positive test. I wonder what the upcoming Silverado EV with 20K towing option would be like on range. Hummer EV is a heavy vehicle, the Silverado EV should weigh in a little less. I am hoping the Silverado EV tow package would be capable of 225+ mile range with a 6850 GTW travel trailer in tow. That would make local camp grounds with in reach reasonably with out too much DC fast charging fuss. Thank you Steve for the insight with your tow demonstration.

Short answer, yes. What does it matter if you have to charge twice at 20 minutes each versus once at 40? Better to have the longer range, especially when towing.

Its usable but the question would be how much worse is it with some wind? It ideally would cut the amount of stops in half compared to R1T, but youd have to stay there charging longer. Could shorten trips by not having to hitch and unhitch multiple times.

Really cool to see somone actually towing and using the hummer ev for fun rather than just showing off. Question for you though, if you pull into a campsite with hookups, are you overnight charging the hummer using the level 2 cable? At the same time as having the trailer powered? I would love to know more. This would be my goal. Drive a day. Camp and charge a day.

We can charge the Hummer on 50amp and have the trailer on 30 amp in many campsites. Some we only have access to 50 amp and 20 amp...so it definitely depends on the site!

Sounds wonderful and great until you look at the cost of a Hummer EV or any other EV truck. Paying $100K + for a vehicle that is only capable of what you just towed is ridiculous. As you indicated, the charging network is not at the point of being able to support long distance towing. The “Cyber Truck” will have a better charging network but again it takes a lot of time to recharge. Of course, one can make a trip like that assuming one has lots of time for a vacation. I have seen other towing videos with the Ford Lightning and the Rivian R1T and the drop in mileage at 70 mph is around 40 to 50%. But again, the cost of those trucks is outrageous, especially with the higher interest rates and the lack of production pushing up overall price.

It's all about how you look at it. Sure, it takes more time. However, our family has found that because we aren't trying to reach our destination as quickly as possible, that even with limited time, we've been better able to enjoy our destination because we aren't as stressed when we arrive. It only takes around 1-2 hours more for a 500 mile trip...and that would be if we didn't stop at all in a gas vehicle, which with 3 kids is highly unlikely. With good use of time, such as eating meals at stops or doing the grocery shopping for your trip while charging on the road, it really ends up being nearly a wash. For some it would be a jump in price. For us, we were towing with a F-350 diesel Platinum, which runs about the same price as the R1T. Then, when you factor in the fuel savings, the Rivian is actually cheaper.

I’m thinking of trading in my 3500 ultimate on a 22 hummer ev edition 1 truck. I’m curious which vehicle you prefer towing with? Hummer or R1S? We’re also looking at the rivian, but I love the fact I can take the roof off the hummer. Which one do you think goes better in the mountains of CO?

It is a good tow vehicle if you can do all your towing on the original charge. Who the hell wants to unhitch every 200 miles or so and sit at an EV charger for well over an hour. And that is assuming you can find an operating DC rapid charger. If your only option is a level 2 charger on the road you will be needing that camper :) LOL

I have owned an EV and a PHEV (not trucks.) The Hummer EV is impressive in so many ways. If it could do 200+ miles on a charge that is a step in the right direction. I tow my 6.500 lb. travel trailer with a new Silverado. When I get to 200 miles I pull into a gas stop, fill up, do the necessities, and roll out in 15 minutes with a full tank. Can’t see that happening with the Hummer. In a few years, yes or maybe, Not now.

@@AllElectricFamily I hope so. There is something so cool about charging a vehicle with renewable energy and essentially driving around on wind or solar power. The Wallbox in my garage is at the ready when the stars align for another EV. My guess is the someday replacement for my wife's Highlander Hybrid will have a plug on it as well.

I think the Hummer is 800v, so if you can get optimum charging rate it shouldn't be bad. Can't be thta much worse with the two 400v trucks you have had in the past.

Now tow a normal box trailer that is not as aerodynamic. That’s what most people can afford to tow. Guarantee that the efficiency will drop tremendously with a box behind it as opposed to the airstream. Still proving that the EV movement is just another rich person movement. -own a home to house charger -buy/own solar panels to (charge for free) -spend $100k on an EV truck -buy an expensive aerodynamic trailer Please someone tow a normal box trailer so we can see the true towing efficiency of these things.

212kWh @ $0.36/kWh (Electrify America w/pass) = $76.32 trip / ~$0.32 per mile. If you can charge at home or find a free L2 charger, the numbers get a lot better. Home power rates here in Michigan are ~$0.15/kWh which brings that trip down to $31.80 trip / ~$0.13 per mile.
