In this video, I explain the steps to remove your alternator for a 3.5 or 3.7 Hummer H3.

IMPORTANT EDIT: To reinstall the 2 connectors under the fuse box, you need to lift the internal part of the connector so that 2 littles arms will stick out. Those arms have grooves that will connect to a pin under the fuse box!

IMPORTANT***FUSE BOX For those who wants a specific on how to remove and reinstall the fuse box follow this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXXalIGprpl3e8k IF YOU DON'T INSTALL IT PROPERLY THERE WILL BE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. And do not apply to much force when screwing back the bolt for the wire connected to the alternator/generator. This will need to be fix since the alternator won't work anymore.

2006 H3 250K miles. Did it in 1 1/2 hrs. Don't understand the bracket for just one aluminum tube. Didn't need to remove fuse box either. Thanks for the video.

Meh, the 3.5 and 3.7 have weird brackets like that. They feel over engineer for what they do. When you removed the alternator without removing the fuse box, did you pull it towards the firewall? Just to give an idea to other people who wouldn't want to remove the fuse box. It would help!

@@probonomechanic I was able to unclip the wire harness and pull on the aluminum tube enough. Just brushed against fuse box.

I was approved for the financing and was about to buy an H3. I'd been watching a lot of videos prior to the purchase when this hit my feed. Considering it's a 15 minute job on my S10 that is free of obstacles I'm having a lot of second thoughts about making the purchase. This is ridiculous how much GM buried it.

I owned a GMC S15 for nearly 10 years, it's basicly the sonoma/s10 of the 80's- 90's. They are really good trucks! The late 90's -2000 s10 had issues with the frame rusting. But beside that you could drag them for years without any major problems. If you have a 4x4 s10 and the frame is solid, I would stick with the s10. The H3 is nice, but I would suggest them to someone that is handy in mechanic, since they kind be tedious on maintenance and to fix on your own (but again depends on your personal experience in mechanic) or to someone that have a good wallet to pay for the repair. But it doesn't mean it's not for you. You can find many aftermarket parts for cheap to decent price. And once you know them, they are pretty easy to work with. (GM engine in the end are all the same) My honest opinion, if you need to do a loan for it (and here it depends on the amount you pay for it to! Some people over price them, make sure to check the blue books) and that you expect it to be a tank that will not break for the next 5 to 10 years without problems I would say skip it. Better have a good work horse (vehicle) that cost nothing and parts are everywhere then being strap for cash. Feel free to ask any question! But in the end, its your choice. Maybe some other people in the comment will say otherwise.

So far my 2006 H3 has had the lowest maintenance ever..just the basics oil, filter, fluids etc. At 248,000 miles it has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever had, still..and I have had many. I just gas up and go. I do have rust in rear underside, due to NE snow but also because I didn't have mud flaps on the rear. So I guess it's the luck of the draw..sometimes.

Depends how well they are taking care of. Honestly I didn't have much to do like you said they are pretty sturdy. The rust does attack the rear more. Watch your rear door flaring. The back wheels throw a lot of stuff behind that plastic mold. Glad to see another strong running H3! Best vehicle I ever drove in the snow!

I did change the alternator on H3 twice. By removing the fuse box and by removing fan cover then bending a bit the ac hose. The 2d opinion way better and faster., because watch out when putting back the fuse box, not to bend the shjtloads of pins underneath when putting it back.

My video isn't properly done. I need to redo the job without the camera bugging at the fuse box part. That's the thing. The fuse box can be a really easy job, if you know what your are doing. So the removal takes about 20 min to do and reinstall is as fast. So I made a specific video on how to remove the fuse box, and its super easy and go in as butter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXXalIGprpl3e8k The problem is that there is a weird trend to push the fuse box in place with the connectors unextended and it bend the pins. They need to extend the connectors until they clip open. After that the fuse box slide in place no problem. In the end, the time is about the same for both method. But the fusebox one, request the person to understand the whole process to make it proper. For me its easier, but I suggest big time to check the proper method to remove and install the fusebox to do the job. In the end this method is the safest of both. No bending of ac pipre and fusebox pin. Knowing is power hahaha Thanks for the comment! How much time it took you between the 2 methods?

@Pro Bono Mechanic hey :) I had to change the alternator 3 times in 3 years that I have the vehicle. 1st time, by removing the fuse box it took me almost 2 hrs, 2 d time playing with fuce box roughly 1hrs, then I bent one of the pins, 3 times I did it about 3 weeks ago, by the removing the fun guard and sneaking it trough the front about 20 min. Ah, and forgot to tell, last summer when I did the job on fuel injectors, I took off the air intake and changed the serpentine belt with tentionners, I unbolt the alternator for easier access. So, to locate the lower bolt and to get it out, it got easy for me. Also I found out how to change starter in that thing.. :)) honestly, the engineer who designed it, I would invite to perform the mechanics on it, to see how happy he would be ...

Hahahahahahah yes! Please invite me over so I can look at him doing the job! Pretty sure its tge new trend for modern vehicle. They want to make sure the owner can't do the whole job themself. To a point that it gets rediculous even for mechanics lol Honestly, sorry to hear that you had to change it so often. Do you have any leak? Like debris getting in the alternator? Or a lot of lights and accessories? It feel weird that they go out so fast. Anyway, I wish for you that 2022 will be a good alternator hahaa

@Pro Bono Mechanic 1st time I change it because I wonder it was due (I guess for the girl who sold it to me, it was last drop), then the rebuild one I get, wasn't properly rebuild, then last time, it start whining like supercharged, after I change the belt.. It lasted like that for one month.. and I did 2 trips back and forth Montréal- New York, good thing it broke not far from my place, so I can CAA tow it... I general I think if you want to ow that wehicle, you'll have to to the mayor or all mechanics yourself, otherwise you'll go bankrupt. On my H3 I did crazy job. I tear it apart almost whole thing, change lots of parts (suspension, brakes, censors, some wiring job, rust proof, brand new paint job, chome strip, sandblast, powdercoat...- you name it) but to do that you'll have to keep in mind that you'll newer get your $ back, you do it because you like the wehicle... Anyway, happy new year for you too! :)

Hi Dillon, Remove your battery, lift the fuse box again. Check the pins that are under the fuse box, just to make sure there are no bent pins. If the whole thing seems in order, there are 2 little brackets on each side of the plugs that connect under the fuse box (big white plugs), make sure to lift those brackets as far as you can (it will make the middle part of the plug stick out of the bracket) and push the plug back into the fuse box (slowly and straight). Let me know the result!

thank for your video bro.without that i dont think i take risk to remove my h3 alternator,it takes me about 3 hours but i am glad i didnt pay for labor,i order new one so to put it back do ineed t release the belt one more time and put it in alternator before i hold it(screw it) ?

Hi, Reinstal by screwing it in place, then remove the tension from the belt to install it over the alternator. The tensioner is located on the other side of the front of the engine. Update.Hi bro i order new alternator from amazon and i place it but now nothing work in car(dont turn on and no lights or sound when you put the key in! )i thought the battery was drained completely with the old alternator i get new battery but still the same.do you think the alternator i bought is damaged or i miss something when i reconnect wires and putting back the fusd box that i removed.even with bad alternator i think the car suppose to start with new battery at least for few minutes right?and tips you give me will be helpful and thank you

For the alternator, the wire that connect to the back of it is just hold in place by an easy to strip when putting back the nut. Make sure you didn't strip the threads. The terminal for the battery are well known to cause problems on the H3. Make sure they are properly installed. As it coupd be the problem. When you reinstalled the fuse box, did yoi follow the link that I sent you? You may want to remove the fuse box again and make sure the white connectors that are under the fuse box that connects to the wiring harness are completly extended as far as possible and that they are clipped in place. On a side note, can you tell me the symptoms that your H3 had before doing the alternator job. I want to make sure you are working on the actual problem.

@@probonomechanic thank s a lot.i will check all that when i get home,i remember for the back wire of the alternator,i just screw it tigh all the way then i cover it so maybe was the problem,yes i have seen your video and i heard a click when i put the fuse box back and all pins looks fine,beside those two white connectors there is one smaller connector in right side but i dont see anything connected to it! so the problem starts when my car wont start and the lights very low then after i jump start the car,everything work great then after 2 days the car did the same so i said maybe the battery is dead so i bought new one and put it back and it works then after few days while the car parked in garage wont start again,at the begining change the terminals but nothing change so by elimnation i suspect that it was alternator or something that drain a battery everytime

Battery light actually means the alternator is not charging. Rarely will bad battery create a light.

I agree, my mistake since I did not make the distinction for different location in the world. The fact is that we get -35 degree celcius (or -31 fahrenheit) and it is common for cells within the battery to be damage by the battery expending when it freezes. It is a story geography in that case.

I did mine yesterday and now the only thing that comes on is my head lights. I had an aftermarket security system in and now nothing comes on. So mad right now!!! SMH

Hi, sorry for the delay! You have no power? Did you check my video for the how to uninstall and reinstall the fusebox? kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXXalIGprpl3e8k This is usually the problem! The brackets under the fuse box needs to be lifted and lock in place before dropping it back. If you push it in place without the brackets in their proper position it can bend the pins or just not be connected properly!

Hi, Sorry for the delay! Did you properly reconnect the plugs under the fusebox? If it was maybe not aligned properly! There are 2 white pins on each side of the plug, you need to push them as far as possible to make sure the connectors are lifted out of the plug. (It should click!)

You really should remove this video and do it without touching the fuse box, there is NO NEED to remove it. Seems people who have no idea what they are doing have caused themselves issues by doing so. I removed mine without even touching it.

Hi James, thanks for the comment. Would you mind giving a description on how you removed it without removing the fuse box. It would help those who do not want to remove the fuse box. The channel is more like a forum page so any info for the others the best! Edit: did you slide towards the firewall or did you pull more to the front near the AC hose? For the video the fuse box is extremely easy to do sadly the video edit is went side ways. So I made a video on how to remove it. It is a safe process when you know how to do it.

My method, remove upper radiator hose to access fan shroud, slide bottom half up and around and remove shroud. Loosen tensioner and remove serpentine belt from alternator pulley only(unless replacing). Remove battery and battery box (for room and safety). Unplug front sensor and move back wire harness cluster( use small bungee cord to hold it out of the way). Unbolt A/C line and yess, bend it back as far as possible, you are not likely to cause damage if you do it slow and gentle, It’s either this or take the chance at messing up your electrical system by remove fuse box. Remove all 3 bolts and bracket. Unplug alternator wire nut and harness. Remove bottom alternator bolt first, then both top bolts. With minor maneuvering the alternator will come right out the top. So personally I seen no need to touch the fuse box, especially after reading others issues. Overall, your video helped, thank you.

Ivhad to remove the inner fender well before to replace the intake manifold gaskets and after watching this I have to Disagree 👎 the going through the bottom is a lot easier.
