Hummingbird Babies Rescued by Rehabber

Our little mother Costa's Hummingbird in Las Vegas, Nevada, became unable to feed her baby birds for nearly a day. Fortunately because this was observed on Hummingbird Spot's live cam, we were able to intervene and the baby hummingbirds were rescued by a certified rehabber. The babies are doing great and we expect them to grow and be released back into the wild.

This was bittersweet. I checked in on the little ones at least once every day, and more frequently overnight, when I work. I'll miss seeing mama and her nestlings all snug in their nest for the night, but I'm just glad they're alright. That rehabber is a saint.

I remember not seeing her at the nest at night and wondering what happened. Then I was checking the following day, and still did not see her at the nest.... I am so grateful someone took action to save the little fellows. I hope to see a video showing how they are released. ❤

While it may be disappointing we won't be able to follow their journey live, I think there is such a positive light at the end of the tunnel in being able to observe them and understand there were issues, contacting an experienced rehabber to come to their assistance. Perhaps the mother knew to come back when the sun was out more to warm them up. Nature is so special and so mysterious it’s hard to know. I just hope the mother didn’t come back to the loss of her nest and babies. It’s hard to believe that a mother wouldn’t have made several attempts over time to feed them. It was good that someone had the knowledge to feed and hopefully bring them up to fledge. Good luck babies, mom and rehabbed.

Based on the timestamp, she was gone for 8+ hours after last feeding so probably wasn't coming back. Younger ones are usually less aggressive so will give up their territory instead of fighting for it. Still surprising with her nesting. Either way, it didn't look like the babies would make it through another night so no choice at that point.

@@elizabeth-2213 I think it's common practice to return birds to where they were found, but since these babies were taken elsewhere to mature I'm not sure where their natural home actually is (here or there).

So sad, today I just found out that the mom haven’t came back. It is the first time we have hummingbird nest in our backyard. So we don’t have camera, we just leave them there and not interrupt them. But 2 weeks had past and I don’t see any sign of the birds grow out the nest as the pictures show on google, so I finally went out to see , and find out, So Sad that they dead. R.I.P 😭

Rehabbers have special food that contains the protein they need and that substitutes for the insects that mom usually feeds them.

I found 2 baby hummingbirds one unfortunately was dead ! And the other is a survivor ! But I don’t know what exactly I should feed him ! ( am giving him ants and fruit flys ) what else I should feed him plz help he seems to be weak !

You will not be able to do this yourself. You need to call a rehabber in your area. Search for wildlife rehab in your area.

Where I live in California we have sweat bees , they kinda look like a wasp . They are bully’s to the hummingbird and one single sweat bee chased my hummer off lol how can that be?
