It's quite possible that Esmeralda and Pheobus simply sang the wrong words and they just went with it. Trying to fix it would have made it obvious that they flubbed up. One of the prime things they teach you as a singer/musician is that the worst thing you can do is show that it was a mistake. That being said, I agree with you. Those lyrics are just as significant as the words they sang, and I am disappointed that they didn't sing that.
