I would understand them not taking that... but try using a Scottish note in Iceland Gateshead, they refused it. Also Sports Direct have to check it by a manager before they can cash it. I just told them don't bother and left every item at the till and took the cash saying it's xenophobia!

A shop can refuse to sell you items at point of purchase, if the petrol station font accept certain money they need to put ot on the pump because once the fuel hits the tank it becomes a debt which can be paid with all legal tender

At a till in a shop for most goods, they can refuse to sell you the goods if they aren't happy with your form of legal tender. With fuel put into a car's tank and restaurant meals you have consumed goods / services and are under obligation to pay your debt. Debts can be settled with any form of legal tender.
