Hungarian pro tip - paprika! Bacon lard in place of butter. Cook bacon onions garlic then add your cabbage. Cook your noodles in Chicken broth. Use a cup of left over broth from noodles and the noodle into your fried cabbage. Add a couple dashes of vinegar. Add your paprika and let the noodles soak up all that glorious broth. Add a generous amount of paprika. I shred my cabbage on a mandolin like my grandmother.

I just received my 2 qt enameled cast iron dutch oven. When I post this, I’m going to wash it and make this recipe, with your modifications (minus the bacon lard, I have mini smoked sausages). Thank you!

My maternal grandmother was Hungarian, she always made this, and would sprinkle in poppy seeds....a true Hungarian dish...it was delicious, and that's how I make it.

Yes yes yes hulushka. I don't know if I spelled that correctly. Many years ago I dated a woman whose parents were first generation Hungarian American. I loved going to her parents house for dinner because her mom was a wonderful cook. My favorite dish was fried cabbage and noodles, which if I remember correctly she called hulushka kapusta. Her family was such wonderful people and wonderful cooks. Just bought a large head of cabbage and will be making this dish very soon. And by the way, that bowlful serves one.

I'm making this for dinner tonight! Not sure it's that inexpensive though. Cost me over $20 for the ingredients. Making it as a side dish with corned beef so over $40 for dinner for 2 people.

I am a Hungarian Kapustas' Testa... Cabbage with noodle's... Excellent pronunciation also by the way. I like them with bitesize potatoes also and a little garlic. Bacon added is good too etc. I prefer Hungarian Paprika and like to add yellow Hungarian peppers for a little zip... (They look like banana or cubanelle peppers but a little spicy.) LOL Not too hot but tasty. Thankyou... Koson Um... a form of thank you.

I'm 1st generation Hungarian/American. My Parents and sister are from Budapest. My mother would just use cabbage, oil and wide egg noodles and season it with salt. My father, on the other hand, seasoned it with sugar and cinnamon.
@judithreynolds16573 жыл бұрын
That is more Hungarian than this is.. originally we shredded the cabbage, no bacon and don’t recall onion in it. It was caramelized to the color of walnut shell. Yes, salt and lots of black pepper or sugar …

How about adding a little smoked paprika? And can you use olive oil instead of butter?
@tiny.terrorist.negotiator3 жыл бұрын
Yes to the paprika. No to the olive oil. The butter gives it a richer flavor.
