Hungary is more than Budapest, go to Eger!

My dad and his wife bought a house in Hungary and I am staying here for the first time. We work in the house and garden and explore this beautiful country this week. Today we visited Eger. A must see when you visit this country!
This country is surprising me a lot. I so enjoy this week of slow living with my dad at his new house in Hungary. Dutch people moving to this country. Because we desire a calmer way of living. We feel really happy being here together. It's my second home now, after Poland 🥰

Nynke, how can I thank you for this wonderful video from the charming town of Eger? It is virtually loaded with images of beautiful places, each of them having a big historical and cultural significance. And it invoked in my mind some warm memories from my childhood and early youth. Well, the only way in which I can thank you is by telling you a beautiful story that is related to this historic Hungarian town. If you liked the recent stories about the Copernicus code (video from Włocławek), castle of Bobrowniki (video about the excursion to the countryside of Włocławek), and the bond between the city of Toruń and the Dutch city of Leiden, you'll like this one as well. And the inspiration to the story came to my mind from the glimpse of a street banner shown in your video at 3:33. The inscription on the banner says 'CSILLAG WEEKEND ÁPR. 28 - MÁJ. 1. EGER. DOBÓ TÉR' ('csillag' -> 'star', 'tér' -> 'square'). The banner informs about the event called 'Star Weekend', due to take place this coming weekend in Dobó Square. In this particular context, the word 'csillag' -> 'star' is used to denote the white wine called 'Egri Csillag', which is the white counterpart to the red 'Egri Bikavér' mentioned in my comment to your previous video. So there will be a joyful wine-tasting festival this weekend in the main historic square of Eger. It would be so nice if you could go there with your dad and film it, and also tell about your wine tasting impressions. But the word 'csillag' has a much deeper meaning in the context of the history of Eger. The name of the white wine 'Egri Csillag' -> 'Star of Eger' is derived from the lights emanating from the watchmen's huts which stood on the northeastern borders of the city during the Turkish occupation of Hungary in the 16th and 17th centuries. These 'stars of Eger' were immortalized in 1899 in a historic novel by the Hungarian writer Géza Gárdonyi. The original title of the book was 'Egri csillagok' -> 'The Stars of Eger', but in its English translation the book is known as 'Eclipse of the Crescent Moon'. The Polish translation by Maria Ella Sperlingowa preserves the original title of the book ('Gwiazdy Egeru') and this is the version that I know from my childhood. I read this novel, and also another one, entitled 'Trójkolorowa kokarda' -> 'The Tricolor Bow' by the Polish writer Jadwiga Chamiec (a story about the Hungarians' fight for independence (and the Polish participation in it) during the period of The Spring of Nations (1848 - 1849)) when I was a primary school boy, and Hungary has remained close to my heart ever since. The plot of the book tells the story of the heroic (and successful) defence of the town by 2,100 defenders against the Turkish Ottoman army of 80,000 soldiers. The defenders were fighting the onslaught of the Turks from the stone-walled citadel you show so beautifully in your video. These events took place in 1552. Intertwined with this military thread was a romantic tale of love between the gallant Gergely Bornemissza, a half-orphan and a son of a poor woman, and Éva Cecey, daughter of a landowner, who grew into not only a beautiful woman, but also a fearless warrior and an excellent horse rider as well. Hearing the news about the Turkish army approaching Eger, Gergely joins the forces of the defenders, leaving Éva at home with their little son. Soon after Gergely had left, the child was kidnapped by a stranger whom Éva believed to be a Turk involved in the siege of Eger. Brave Éva dressed up as a man and joined the Eger defenders by smuggling herself into the besieged citadel. The commander of the defenders was István Dobó (1502 - 1572), a Hungarian military leader and aristocrat, whose full name was Baron István Dobó de Ruszka. His monument stands in the middle of the main square of the town named after him; you showed this monument between 4:27 and 4:37 in your video. When the Ottoman forces were finally defeated and withdrew, Gergely's and Éva's little son was exchanged for a Turkish boy captured during the siege, the family was happily reunited, and at this point the book ends. Mało świata zwiedziłem, ale w Egerze akurat byłem. Bardzo dobrze wspominam, ale wieczorem trudno było kupić zimne piwo. Kolejny świetny film. Pozdrawiam.

The Hungarian countryside and towns are very similar to Polands. I can only imagine this was tue to the Austrian Hungarian empire influence. Absolutley magical vid. Thank you Nynke and Papa.

The Austro-Hungarian time had an important touch on it but it is much-much more. In fact 1000 years are imprinted there. You might have missed but for a glimpse there was a minaret in the video, remnant of the Ottoman occupation. So it is much-much more than just the A-H times.

Actually, what I have seen from the countryside in Poland, your infrastructure is in a much better shape over there...roads and pavements, just like the buildings are in a shabby condition in Hungary... there are still lots of dirt roads while asphalt roads are usually full of potholes and many houses are abondened and in a terrible state of repair

I have just seen two of your vids and I think you will enjoy Hungary immensely. Hungary is packed with wonders, Eger itself is very interesting (just look up the stories about the brave Hungarian women fighting the Ottoman Turks, or visit the wine valley "Szépasszonyok völgye"), but there are Pécs, Szeged, Sopron etc. etc. And add to the countryside the lakes and rivers all over Hungary (so not just lake Balaton, which itself is a wonder), go kayaking at Tisza tó, or in Szigetköz, or just have a weekend at Holt-Körös around Szarvas. I deliberately named a few examples across the country to show there is magic in every corner of this country. Just type in these key words and search here in YT.
