We saw this blockbuster at a huge drive-in theatre in Texas and the place held spaces for 500 cars and each car was packed with people----and most of the cars were huge. Ten minutes before the movie started, the box office was closed----the place was full. Unless you were there in 1968, you don't really know just how exciting this Saturday night out at the movies could be. The average drive-in screen was already much larger than even the largest screens in the downtown movie palaces, but the larger drive-ins, like this one, had THE largest screen in the entire state; in fact, it was one of just twenty screens out of 5,000 in the U.S. that was this large. This great drive-in had a playground, a miniature golf course, three snack bars, an arcade, and a miniature boat lake for the kids with state-of-the-art rechargeable boats! The 1960's was a decade that had its problems, but middle class families had it pretty good, and a night out at a drive-in like this one beats just about anything that is out there today.

In 1947, McQueen joined the United States Marine Corps where he was promoted to private first class and assigned to an armored unit.[6] He initially reverted to his prior rebelliousness and was demoted to private seven times. He took an unauthorized absence by failing to return after a weekend pass expired, staying with a girlfriend for two weeks until the shore patrol caught him. He resisted arrest and spent 41 days in the brig.[6] After this he resolved to focus his energies on self-improvement and embraced the Marines' discipline. He saved the lives of five other Marines during an Arctic exercise, pulling them from a tank before it broke through ice into the sea.[6][17] He was assigned to the honor guard, responsible for guarding the presidential yacht of US President Harry Truman.[6] McQueen served until 1950, when he was honorably discharged. He later said he had enjoyed his time in the Marines. - from Wikipedia.

The "Seven-Ups" car-chase didn't really match the other two: Roy Scheider was no Steve McQueen for coolness and his anger just didn't match Gene Hackman's manic turn as Doyle, even though he tried and he tried and he tried.

@@None-zc5vg Steve McQueen was no Roy Scheider by any stretch of the imagination and I don't know what you're blubberin' about but I suggest you rest your skull and/or up your meds, you have ZERO idea what you're talkin' bout

Very true. What I like in those older movies is that they did not need to talk all the time.

Lalo Schifrin at his best. Funny how many of my favorite movies are scored by him. This was also Steve McQueen at his very best. This movie is a landmark in cinema.

Steve McQueen was a man's man. He barely needed to act.

Not funny at all. A great soundtrack can save a so-so movie. Not that this masterpiece was so-so! Great detective story, the best car chase ever, great acting by some of the best in the business.

Oldest brother died unexpectedly 2 months ago, he was the oldest of 4 sibs~seven years older than me (I’m the baby) & my protector growing up. First sib to die 😿. Looked just like Steve McQueen & drove a light bronze fastback Stang in HS, my epitome of cool R.I.P. Robert James💔

McQueen was a real badass gangster in his teens and one hell of a tough hombre in real life, with a Purple Heart, from the Navy to show for, much respects for this gentleman.

Paul Genge , the grey haired hit man was a staff sergeant in the Army. He looked tough because he was. I suspect6 he could walk the walk

The guy in glasses is Bill Hickman who also did all the actual stunt-driving in _The French Connection;_ and was first on the scene when his friend James Dean was killed, who died in his arms.
