They don't really need Chrollo to be successful as a group. But they all like him and in the case of the original founders, they love him as longtime friend. It's also interesting that the argument between the founders isn't whether or not they value him as a friend, but how to EXPRESS that. On one side, you have Phinks and Feitan who express it by making sure to follow the rules that Chrollo put in place, and then Machi and Paku expressing it by trying to save Chrollo's life if there is a way to. And in the middle you have Franklin who has the most balanced approach xD

What I love about this is the author is showing that even the notorious phantom troupe are given character depth. They are not just flat out 'I'm evil so I'm the villain'.

Spiders weren't really fighting... they were just bickering which is fair to do in a stressful situation and they're very well capable of functioning without Chrollo. Seeing Illumi during the end of the episode always sends chills.

Its not that the spiders arent that good without Chrollo, its just that even if the deal within the spiders is: "if the head(chrollo) is chopped off the spider still moves" even with that, some of the members still dont want to lose him and they follow their heart, and others dont, so they are bickering around what they should do, they are not fighting significantly. Kurapika plays on the card that the spiders would be affraid to lose the boss, but chrollo hopes that they arent, so they would not have any weaknesses to be used against them in these kinds of situation. Fortunately, Kurapika is smart enough to pick his targets amongst spiders 🤓

The thing is, Phinks and Feitan are also following their hearts. Their way of expressing the value of Chrollo as a leader and friend is by following his rules with absolute certainty. It's not an argument of one side not "following their heart", it's a difference on how to express their loyalty to Chrollo.

@@crazyape515 that's only because they haven't lost him yet and are having differing opinions on the situation. you can see later when they have feitan as interim leader and then in the manga with the trio of nobu + phinks + feitan that they're pretty well-organized even when they split into mini-spider squads x)

Also, Kurapika's oath is actually very easy to beat once you know about it, especially the part where he dies instantly when he uses Chain Jail on a non-spider. There's just too many ways to exploit that kind of limitation.

I remember you comparing him to Batman and Batman has the same imbalanced limitation, which in his case is "can't kill". Ofc the explanation for that IRL is all his enemies are also IP characters so the writers can't kill them off permanently. But in-universe it's a very weird and exploitable limitation for a vigilante and it's probably why no real-life vigilante works with that sort of limitation :P
