They got the information because their have been studies on the order of smaller Chimera Ants. What made the current ants such a mystery is that 1. The queen was huge and 2. They consumed humans so their behavior became unpredictable.

That is the thing with Gon. He is hypocritical and selfish, but people overlook it because he is the prota. The samething happens with Killua who has killed thousand people and never shows any remorse about the people he killed and anybody cares about it, but them they HATE chimeras who has killed less people than him with a better reason.

Chimeras were supposed to only bring food for the Queen but ended doing this kind of twisted games. It's not the same a killer that enjoys bathing in its victims blood that a remorseful one.

Although tbf, I still think Gon would share no sympathy either to those that kill for fun. Proven by him crushing that armadillo ant. This is more of a writing standpoint to showcase "what would Gon do if the enemy cared for another". And as I'm writing this, I just realized something at the same time......

12:14 Gon wanted to go first with that angry look on his face bc he was already pissed since the previous episode with the ants using humans as dogs and he already intended to kill the ant he sliced then (even tho Kite finished the job so this one is only technically his first kill) ...but he still wanted to give Baro a last chance to live, or let's say his resolve wasn't hard enough at the beginning of the fight...he just avoided the attacks first and then Baro talked about how much fun he had killing humans (and it wasn't for food! Gon said he could let Baro live bc he had no intention to eat him, so in his POV the ants killing them for food would be acceptable) and THEN you see Gon going full power with his ren and attempting to catch and crush Baro...so yes both reasons are correct like you said the highlight is put on that part of his reasoning bc it will be important later, as we already can guess that some ants already show some non-evil human feelings, have memories from their human lives, so Gon's resolve could waver once again and THAT would be "dangerous" (foreshadowing his last fight and the moral conflict other characters will face with the same mindset)

In this episode Gon wanted to fight first, not only bc of a childish competition with Killua but if you look at his face, you can see that he was already pissed since the previous episode with the ants using humans as dogs (and Ponzu's death too... he knew her but she wasn't a friend either)...so he DOES care about people who aren't his friends if your argument was that it's weird that Gon cared about those NGL bad guys used as dogs who maybe didn't deserve his compassion I could agree, but even then, Gon never believed that bad people deserved to be killed by his own hands, he never played the executioner That's why he let Binolt go surrender himself (bc Bisky decided to let him live/leave first, if she decided to kill him Gon wouldn't be able to stop her) and also thank him for his help bc he was truly helpful to them, nothing wrong with that it doesn't mean they became friends (he became friend with Killua yes but it's bc Killua rejected that life) and he didn't forgive the Bombers either, they captured and restrained them so they won't hurt anyone else and THEY decided to heal everyone and explained their reasoning, they never said it was Gon's idea so putting that decision on Gon only is just wrong (if anything Killua was the one arguing that he had no right to judge them and that was great character development)

2:43 The reason this seemed random is because it was. The whole conversation between Kite and Yunju and their fight are filler that were not in the manga, where only the aftermath was shown, which also explains why Gon's fight seemed to take forever, since Kite's was shoved in-between. Same with the anime claiming they produced weapons, which makes no sense because that would require smelters that could not be hidden. They also started reusing footage from the previous episode at the start of the episode, like any lame shounen anime. *SPOILER:* 8:00 Nicole: "Nuke it!" 👀

It's a lot to remember, to be fair. I know a lot of the system and all the ways you could manipulate nen.. but not a lot of people are caught up with the manga. True to your point though, the condition that his current weapon be randomized probably implies it's there as a restriction to enhance his ability.
