Hunting Rabbits with an Air Shotgun

A new approach to small game hunting with an airgun hunting: On this outing I used the Seneca Double Shot, side by side air shotgun, to hunt for the big Texan blacktailed jackrabbits.
The air shotgun was capable of taking rabbits at almost 30 yards, with the right load. I was using a double laded long shell, packed with #5 shot.
This is a very versatile pcp air rifle, able to shoot shotshells, AirBolts, or .50 caliber roundball. This one air rifle can be used on upland game, predator, or big game!

Good video Jim, I'm taking one for tree squirrels and Quail myself here very soon. My only concern obviously is lack of air, a buddy bottle I'm sure can make outings go much longer. @@americanairgunhunter I own a bone collector air rifle. i want an air shotgun for small game, and what I've seen so far is just the Senecas. Is there any other different or better air shotguns?

I've been a big fan of airguns for nearly 50 years now and while I find both this and its single barrel version to be extremely cool, I'd have an extremely tough time justifying its purchase. There's just nothing that it does that a conventional shotgun wouldn't do significantly better and for less money. If the shells were reusable maybe, but it appears that they're not and they're not at all cheap.

It's a niche gun even for enthusiast. What I like about this gun is I can use it for small game with shotshells, take hogs with roundball, then use .50 cal airbolts for air archery on deer. That economic statement is true across the board, you can do small game with a .22 lr or big game with a 30-06 for less than most airguns, certainly when considering the added costs air tanks and/or a compressor. My analogy is the I could catch more fish with a spinning rod from Walmart than my $1200 Orvis fly rod......... I just like fly fishing more and I like the Orvis rod. Nothing wrong with either view

​@@americanairgunhunter The difference is that while the initial purchase may be more expensive than a rimfire, it won't be once you go through all the hassle and expense involved with getting a legal suppressor. With airguns I don't have to bother with all that and once the purchase has been made they're usually much cheaper to shoot. Being able to shoot quietly allows me to shoot far more often and in a more relaxed setting. For someone who wants to do a lot of shooting, quality airguns really are one of best investments you can make. I'm not saying this isn't a great product or that someone shouldn't buy it, just that from a standpoint of practicality it doesn't make much sense. It's really the kind of thing you buy because you have an airgun obsession or because you are prohibited from owning firearms. And I'm speaking as somebody that owns a musket. Not everything has to be practical. If it puts a smile on your face then it's worth it.

Great video sir! Love the info regarding double loading. I have a question and a question/request. With double loading, are you able to do that with the standard pre packaged shells that you can buy from Venturi? If not, where can one get the materials to make their own? Now for my question/request. I have not been able to find any accuracy videos for either the wingshot or the doubleshot using only slugs or round ball. I’ve only seen ones with airbolts or shot shells. Do you know of any and if not, would you be willing to make one? I am very interested in their performance for whitetail deer applications but am very hesitant to make the purchase bcause I have seen nothing to base my expectations on. Thanks In advance

Here in the uk its always customary to flush a rabbit with a shotgun to give it a sporting chance. Shotguns are for moving game only. Generally.

I wouldn’t say “tested”, I did used one on an iguana hunt and had some very good results with it. I liked the feel of the gun, and the accuracy and power were quite good.

Hello Jim... I’m am picking up a Wingshot ( single barrel) second hand for a great price. Seeing you double loading, I’m wondering if a double loading of 5 shot lead, or possibly 6 shot Hevi-shot would take a turkey down with a headshot at 25 yds.... I still remember a childhood friend took a gobbler out of his backyard ( in season) with a Spanish break barrel at that distance. That gun only produced 600 fps with a Crosman Wadcutter (.177)..

Hi Neal.... funny you ask that. I was just down in Texas on a deer hunt and ended up taking my first Rio Grande with an airgun....... my .357 Texan, so a bit of overkill! But I was wishing I'd had my Wingshot with #5's instead. I think it would work, I'd probably prefer 20 yards, but think it would do 25. Let's hear how it goes. BTW: just finishing editing and will publish that turkey video this week.

Hi Jim this is Trevor over at Northeast Florida Outdoors I just bought a Seneca double shot and was wondering if it has the same power as the dragon claw could you help me with this. Wondering the fpe etc. for deer hunting purposes.

I’ll have to go back and see what I can find in my notes, but off the top of my head I recall getting about 150 fpe using round ball, which is 40 fpe less than with my standard dragon claw. However, shooting air bolts this gun is a monster, and you can load one barrel with a air bolt and one with RB and make a call on which to use in the field. Good luck, lets hear how it goes for you. I’ll post more when I get a chance to do some note diving.

William Jann I think it will, these jacks are much tougher than cottontails. I take your point about the tenacity of the grays, will be doing some squirrel hunting with it and do an update on my experience.

Jim when you described “double loading” did you mean you were quite literally loading 2 shells in the same barrel or firing both barrels simultaneously?

I was loading two shells in the same barrel. Only a slight drop in velocity when I chrony'd it, but put a much denser pattern on target. The length of the loading port limited the length of shot shells that could be used. Loading two was the only way II could think to increase the load.

I wouldn't make this my first or only air rifle, but a lot of fun for specific applications. The fact you can shoot airbolts and roundball/slugs out of them does sweeten the value proposition!

My preference is the single barrel, it's much lighter and aims better, especially when using roundball or AirBolts out of scattergun mode.
