Cam you know as well as I do not all men are created equal and those that push back on the idea of physical fitness related to hunting are those that envy the men that have the ambition and drive to put the work in when they don’t. Keep Hammering!

Cam you are spot on regarding fitness in the woods. My elk hunting buddies are between 58 and 63. This year we quartered my elk and had to walk 2 miles to the truck. It was very muddy and mud kept sticking to our boots layer upon layer. I focused on being in very good shape before the hunt and it paid off in dividends during that walk. I was able to go back and relieve someone from their load. I was very grateful that I had the help of my friends to pack everything out, but noticed that the walk wiped out some of the guys. Keep up the great content that so many of us can relate to.

They call me an animal at the gym,I’m 67 work out 4 days a week 3 hours each time. The mountains as he says are unforgiving. I still put 60lbs on my back in wilderness area at 11 thousand feet. It still takes me awhile to get where I’m going but love every step. I can’t run anymore but do tons of cardio. Cam is such an inspiration and this video is so true!! I do this solo last 5 years.

Cam you are so right about physical conditioning. I remember reading your book Backcountry Bowhunting. I marveled at how you far you got into the backcountry and how you could backpack all your gear. Several years ago as an overweight out of shape hunter who had never killed an elk, only whitetailes after reading your book you inspired me to get in shape. Did I run marathons no but i shed 25lbs and hiked with weight on me pre season. That season I was able to further than I ever had. We were five to six miles in from the truck and heard elk bugling over the next ridge. Tired at that point but not deterred we located a nice 6x6 bull. Although my hunting partner wound up killing the bull it taught me a valuable lesson about staying in shape and what a difference it makes to your hunting success. Thank you for your continued inspiration. All the best in the new year!

My eldest brother was an outlier. A remarkable guy. A highly accomplished mountain climber, natural athlete, skydiver, scuba diver, and good at everything that he did. Always calm and thoughtful in an otherwise stressful situation. I did a lot of adventures with him that I would have never done with anyone else. My other brother developed a cowherd here in Alberta that was 2nd to none. Perfect cookie-cutter cattle. Our mother and father were remarkable and everyone who knew them said so. How lucky to grow up with that.

I am with you Cam being prepared for the mountains, hunting season and life in general take fitness! I took up archery hunting 5 years ago and from the beginning of my transition to archery hunting. I was not going to allow for my health to keep me from being successful in the Elk woods. Plus I need to take care of myself for my family. Physical fitness is not only beneficial to me but my family as well. Keep hammering brother! 👊🏼🙌🏼👏🏼🔥💯🙏🏼

As a former competitive distance runner and focusing on the marathon after college, being able to run a marathon certainly helped to get around in the wilderness in my younger years. Now at 67 and not running marathons, having a disciplined fitness program still keeps me able to backpack bowhunt elk! No push back here. Thanks for all you do for the hunting community!

My mother-in-law a very fancy lady. Wearing kit gloves and heeled boots said to my father-in-law. I just don't get the big deal of all your hunting elk. He put her in for the draw and she got drawn. He told her wear better close as winter in Alberta are brutal. On the tailgate he set up her firearm then was setting up his. All of a sudden he hears a huge BOOM! She said I really don't get what the big deal is. She took down a record Elk just down the ditch from where they were getting ready to hike in. Done deal. He kept hunting but has yet to beat her record. That was 35 yrs ago. lol true story.

I’m 63 years old and try to stay in decent shape to hunt and continue to be more motivated to push myself beyond current limits after hearing your work ethic and preparing for hunts. I also believe it’s out of respect for the animals that we hunt to be more efficient hunters.

I totally agree with you brother. A few years ago I packed out a big buck and it nearly killed me physically so ever since I have done the work to build strength and endurance so that I can enjoy hunting and never be limited during the hunt by physical strength. Keep up the great work and advice your an inspiration 😁👍

Cam you are a beast and an inspiration. For New Years, my wife and I stayed at an off grid cabin that required me to carry our gear (lots of it) a half mile up a steep escarpment. It took several trips to the cabin and several back to my truck. It was brutal and I train hard all the time, but a 62, I felt it. I could NOT imagine carrying a bear hide and meat 18 miles out of rough country like you did. I'll have to work harder to catch up to you, LOL.

Love hearing the details and why you push as hard as you do, Cam. I'd love to hear your general thoughts/experience on the nutrition and supplementation that it takes to perform at the level you do. There's so much bullshit out there, but you cut to the chase and keep it real. Hell it might make a quick "Keep Hammering Collective" for ya.

Hey Cam, you’ve covered the ground with your compound bow. Ever thought about taking up the longbow and increasing the requirement for woodsmanship, hand and eye coordination and challenge? I’ve used both and although I love shooting my Hoyt and have arrowed animals I’d have had to pass with my longbow, it is the hunt with the longbow in my hand that stand out most.

Im 53 and still hunt Colorado for ELK. I live in Miami. I up my workouts 6 weeks out and push my body to limits. This has always made a huge difference in the mountains. What do you do for arthritis and joint pain? Every year, there is a new joint that hurts.

Hunting buddy of mine was leaving the field a month or so ago and got waved down by this old man by the road. Old man was hyperventilating from adrenaline, and begging for help because he forgot his phone at home. He’d shot a big 8 point whitetail and couldn’t move it an inch, wanted help dressing it, and obviously needed help getting it into a truck. Understand that your limitations should outweigh your desires.

Ok, heres the question, ive heard comments about how carrying rucksacks or heavy items on your back destroys your back so its not the best thing to do. Is it one of those things where you just gotta roll the dice, carry heavy items so youre stronger, better at hunting and potentially hurt your back or maybe you dont...
@AndrewPorter1011 ай бұрын
I hunted whitetails In the midwest my whole life. I went elk hunting in Utah for the first time when I was 30. I worked out before hand and it still kicked my butt. You can't be a fat elk hunter. You need to put in the time!

I remember when I was a child, my grandfather came from hunting and said that it was the last time he was 70. I'm 56 now and it's getting harder over the years. I used to run every morning now my leg hurts and I don't run, but I stretch every day and lift weights.I'm thinking about Nordic walking. I shoot a bow every day and pour cold water on myself in the morning So we're still walking in the woods.
