Extensive damage after #hurricaneberyl directly hit #carriacou #grenada as a very powerful Category 4. The island is without power, coms and nearly every home is damaged or destroyed. I covered as much ground as I could with the drone.
Sorry for the sloppy edit, just trying to get stuff uploaded at this point.

Very scary. I hope everyone came through safely. As someone who recently experienced the Derecho in Southeast Texas, I couldn't help noticing how many power poles were left standing after this powerful storm, even when palm trees fell. That will certainly aide in the recovery.

I am looking at the trusses left behind on many of the houses that lost roofs, they appear to be in 24 to 36 or more inch centers which is crazy to me. You see some houses with roofs intact, then you see houses minus roofs with those huge truss gaps. Hopefully when they rebuild, they build to a better code.

The lesson on this....Governments in the Caribbean MUST insist on building proper roofing for buildings....concrete or reinforced galvanized. A thorough investigation of the homes that withstood the hurricane should be done. WHAT IS IT THAT MADE SOME ROOFS STAY WHILE OTHERS SUCCUMBED? No more shabby or just nice looking homes. Even the smallest of homes should be built properly. This will save decades of anxiety every time this season comes around.

Not trying to downplay the destruction, but after what just hit this town, I think they fared well. Most of the houses are standing with expected roof damage. These folks know how to build storm resistant homes. To gauge the wind force just look at how all of the trees are shredded. Was there a big storm surge? It doesn't look like there is any debris piled up after the ocean receded. My prayers to everyone affected.

With all this destruction, i am delighted to see that the airport is somewhat intact. Aircraft aid can arrive faster than using boats 🚢 in these choppy waters

This is awful. Thank you for the footage . By any chance you have any footage of Craigston or the Windward side? That’s where our friends and families are.

It is really inexcusable that we still have people dying in these Caribbean hurricanes on the less populated islands given how many passenger and cruise ships move regularly through the region. All of the Caribbean microstate governments should come together and jointly negotiate a standing emergency management plan with the cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian) that in the case of a severe hurricane the cruise lines must cancel some of their itineraries and instead use their cruise ship capacity to rapidly evacuate the residents of the islands at greatest risk away from the hurricane. Agreeing to this plan should be a mandatory requirement to obtain regular cruise port access. The property damage of these hurricanes is to some degree unavoidable, but loss of life is not.

The cost of the standing emergency management plan could be allocated among the Caribbean countries as an insurance system according to a weighted factor combination of their population, actuarial severe hurricane risk, number of populated islands, and geographic proximity to usual cruise origin hubs. It would be negotiated jointly though so that the cruise lines must agree to evacuate all of the countries when needed rather than picking and choosing. The governments could fund it through a mix of port fees and/or citizenship by investment revenue.

Very sad to see all this destruction 😢. It reminds me when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in 2017. We had such a hard time and it took us time to recover. It was like being in a war zone. I pray for peace of mind for all those affected. 🙏🏻
