@@DeathNoteGenderbent Also I should mention that your version of "Playing His Game" is how I learned there was a Death Note musical. I got a recommendation for the cover, and I thought it was a fan-made thing, but I looked into the musical and discovered it was an actual thing and now I'm obsessed with it.

You know this is so well done, it’s made a flaw in the original score super obvious. To me, the instrumentals communicate “hopeful idealist” and not “developing a god complex” I have no musical skill so idk WHY exactly it doesn’t work for me. I just know they don’t. But I can identify the emotions I get from hearing a melody. The instrumentals for “Where’s the Justice?” really captures Light’s passion and anger. I’m not sure exactly which musical elements cause me to feel “anger, passion” from the instrumentals of “Where’s the Justice” while the instrumentals here make me feel “hope, emotional control” I feel like the “calm” instrumentals work for verse 1 and the first chorus. But as the song progresses I really feel like the instrumentals should’ve pulled from whatever the musical elements in “where’s the Justice” make it sound angry and passionate I just feel like the instrumentals are WAY too calm for when someone is screaming “I’m the god of a brave new world!” EDIT: The lyrics of the Japanese / Korean versions of this song very effectively bridge the gap between idealist who follows his fathers teaching and a megalomaniac with a god complex IDK I just really don’t get “idealist developing a god complex” from the instrumentals. I feel like a good musical (and the whole point of making something a musical) should be using the instrumentals to help tell the story. If the lyrics are doing all the work, what’s the point in singing them? It’s a real shame because I feel like the overwhelming majority of songs in Death Note: The Musical do a fantastic job of capturing the emotions / mindset of the character singing through the instrumentals. So the fact this one doesn’t is a real shame. On its own it’s a good song. (Especially your cover of it) But compared the other songs in this musical, it feels weak by comparison. Especially compared to “Where’s the Justice” Can’t wait to hear more of your work! Obviously no pressure to upload the whole musical. Your life and mental well-being come first!
@draigyn7010 Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I would disagree because I do find it becomes more intense as the song goes on. Not by a lot, but I would chalk that up to it still being around the start of musical. Light does talk about being a god and stuff, but I actually like the hopeful idealist vibe. It's a nice juxtapose from Where is the Justice? and I think it does good in representing how Light seems agreeable-ish at first; two different perspectives. The contrast between the music and lyrics/emotion of Hurricane is very nice to me aswell, showing how Light himself is not necessarily as pure as made out to be. I am just a big fan of contrast and clashing vibes in general though; so I get it lol
@opalishmoth8591 Жыл бұрын
@@draigyn7010 actually I’m kinda inclined to agree with you after listening to the Japanese/ Korean versions In those the hopeful melodies work and have Light initially be horrified and disgusted by the fact he killed someone. Of course that doesn’t last long as he realizes he has the power to change the situation and give people hope and an escape from fear. Both still have the line about “i am the god of a new world” but they also have themes of Light viewing this as a sort of self-sacrifice, framing himself as a martyr. Which absolutely works perfectly with melody. Moreover it provides a bridge between his ideals and the ideals of Souchiro. He starts as having the same ideals as his father but strays from them. The Korean and Japanese versions are a beautiful contrast between “Where’s the Justice” and “There are Lines” We see a hopeful idealist twisting into a megalomaniac. The English version just skips to the megalomaniac. Having Light start as a hopeful idealist really adds a dimension/ depth to the character. Despite some of the extreme statements me made in “Where’s the Justice” we see him as a grounded kid. He is hesitant to actually act upon his black-and-white thinking. He starts a good person. Which makes the arc of his character tragic Still think the tone of the English lyrics are at a mismatch with the melody But now I think the lyrics should change to match the melody. Well change to be more in-line with the Korean / Japanese versions. The first six lines of the English version are super strong
@DeathNoteGenderbent Жыл бұрын
@opalishmoth8591 Another thing I think that helps bridge the gap between Light's idealistic side and the total ego-trip side by the end of Hurricane is another song that occurs between Where Is The Justice and Hurricane called Change The World. It exists in the stage versions but wasn't included in the original English demo recordings. We're hopeful that it will be released with the London cast recording soon, but we'll be releasing our version of Change The World as well! I think it helps with making the transition into Hurricane a bit less jarring pacing-wise, plus the reprise of it (sung by the members of the police force) is one of my favorite moments in the show 😊 - Light/Isabel

As an aside, i am disproportionately annoyed by the fact the word “hurricane” is used. In the Eastern Pacific these storm systems are called typhoons. Hurricanes and typhoons (and tropical cyclones) are all different names for the same phenomenon so they technically are interchangeable. The naming conventions is just based on cultural traditions. Hurricane would be familiar to Anerican audiences but it does break my impression LOL I mean it’s a super minor thing But I every time I re-listen to this I can’t help but think “Light is Japanese and the word hurricane wouldn’t be a familiar term in that region” I just can’t help but over analyze media LOL

@opalishmoth8591 the lyrics are very americanized for sure. i have been interested in seeing if we can try to sing the japanese lyrics in english or adapt them to fit the rhythms of the songs in the future as for a lot of the songs, i prefer the darker and more severe, existential lyrics of the japanese version. thanks for the discussion (: - L/kiki

I actually like this song a lot better here; sung by a woman. I thought the male version sounded too generic (not bad... just predictable), like you could have thrown it into any of a dozen contemporary musicals, and no one would notice. This gives it the extra oomph! it needed.
