Some lightning strikes in the eye wall. That's uncommon. Tropical systems don't have lightning very often because they are warm core systems without cold air aloft. Michael also had lightning in the eye wall. Something I guess only high end hurricanes have. I hope SW Florida never sees a storm like Ian again. Worse than even Charley, the previous storm with similar strength, and track, but much smaller in diameter. Charley caused severe wind destruction in Charlotte County, especially in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, but didn't have such a high surge like Ian.

I hope there won't be another storm like Ian in SW Florida for quite some time. Still, you can never rule it out. Just look at all of that 90F+ degree water off of southern and (especially) southwest Florida right now (July 13, 2023). If a hurricane were to track over that, provided that the wind shear were very low, you could get another Ian, or even something worse. I believe the sea-surface water temperatures were around 86F (30C) for Hurricane Dorian and its devastating strike on the Bahamas in 2019. I'm not saying that there will be another Ian (or worse) this year, obviously, _because it's very unlikely to get another storm taking a similar track._ You can never let your guard down, especially considering that you basically have hurricane "rocket fuel" off of southern and southwest Florida right now. If these anomalously-warm water temperatures continue into the peak of hurricane season, and a storm takes advantage of those waters, it could lead to a very destructive hurricane. Ian devastated the lives of so many people, and some are still trying to recover from it almost 10 months later, so I hate to say something like this. Yet I cannot help but notice those extreme water temperatures and think about hurricane preparation, including in those areas still recovering from Ian, but also for the Florida peninsula more broadly, including cities like Tampa and Miami. Truthfully, seeing all those warm waters scares me as we approach the peak of hurricane season, especially if they don't start cooling down. It's the fear of getting a record-breaking monster like Typhoon Haiyan or Hurricane Patricia; nothing that strong has ever been recorded in the Atlantic basin, with Dorian coming the closest. Obviously, worst-case scenarios don't happen that often, but it is definitely something emergency managers and the general public should be looking into this year, just in case the unlikely does happen.

Laura and Ida each had lightning in the eye wall as they were intensifying off the LA. Coast, very sobering and scary to see

He was right with Ian, just hearing how he put this storm into perspective you can't come up with something more stern than the storm itself.

Wink news during a big storm is the best. Selfishly speaking I hope they don't get offered big jobs with the weather Channel. Wink..., pay you anchors well (especially Matt) so they don't go anywhere else. We need them here in SWFL.

She spoke about how much better the cell towers are working with Ian , not for us with Verizon. We lost cell service pretty early on and my phone is still not allowing me to send pictures two months later 🤔

I'm in North Port, just above the Port Charlotte line. I went outside about 1AM after the back eye wall passed. The ONLY cellular service that was working at that point was T-Mobile and that was very congested. I was able to text but did not have enough speed to watch any video content. Verizon, as well as the landline services Xfinity, Century Link, and Blue Stream were dead in the water. It took me 2 days before I was able to check on a friend in Port Charlotte because she had Verizon and was unable to contact anyone. 7 days after the storm I had to make my truck payment via phone from the top of the El Jobean bridge because cellular service was still so poor. It was one of the few places I could find where I had a decent connection. There was a lot of damage to the local cell towers up here.

I'd agree to what you both said. Somehow T-Mobile's network faired the best. Still had issues but still was usable. My parents on Fort Myers Beach were able to hit Verizon towers from Estero and Bonita by standing on the balconies of higher floors. Not the clearest phone calls but good enough to get the message across most of the time.
