I was sent to Galveston for the relief effort when I was in the Navy. I was on the USS Nassau. I remember when I pulled into crystal island port on our LCU boat. There were small houses, capsized boats, dead cows, and debris floating all around us. It looked like an apocalyptic scene. One of my crew mates pulled out several pieces of lawn furniture from the water, and we all used it to play cards on at night, when we took breaks from relief operations. We had to work, eat, and sleep all the while we were surrounded by dead, bloating, and rotting live-stock corpses that was floating all around us. I will never forget it.

I’ve remembered Hurricane Ike coming through Houston since I was 9 years old at the time. My grandmother use to live in Cold Springs which was north of Houston and it did cost damage to her farm. I have remembered watching the coverage and tracking Hurricane Ike when it was coming to Houston. But I live in Western North Carolina and we’ve had hurricanes come from the Gulf of Mexico to the mountains causing major flooding.

I remember Ike very well, like it was yesterday. It scared me to death. I just had put a new mobile home in about 1.5hrs north east of the Island too. When it started heading towards us all days before, I'd told close friends to get out of SETx and go the farthest inland they could. I'd had a sick feeling deep in my gut with this one. We headed to NEOk and had an "Ike-ation" for a few weeks. We finally were able to get ppl on the phone down home and my daughter had gone by my home. There was half of a huge 100 yr old 60' yellow pine on my house. It got rebuilt by the factory when I was able to get back. Still, ppl were living with generators and in RV's for weeks and even months up where I lived. I've always gone w/ that gut feeling I got from Ike with any hurricane. It's never proven me wrong. I hope others take head and evacuate when we are told to do.
