Pulling a calf & draining an abscess... just a typical Wednesday.

The cow that prolapsed a few weeks ago unfortunately has some more trouble and is unable to deliver her calf. The calf is dead, but we make an attempt to get it out of her to save her life. Then, as we are checking on the rest of the herd, we find a pretty nice abscess on one of the newborns that we end up draining. Thanks for watching, eat beef, and God bless!!

That's why we use Hereford and Angus over our Friesian heifers Instead of Friesian bull. They are Way too large on small frame Cows. Plus the beef X prices Are through the roof here in Australia.

So that what we were taught hard work neve hurt anyone but it made your a better person. Over the Years ive had some really dirty hard jobs for a girl but im here. 😀 Never been the delicate little flower. The cow did make a full recovery. We sold her about a month later (waited for antibiotic withdrawal period to expire), as we didn’t want to breed her again for obvious reasons. We didn’t ever have to give the calf any additional treatment. She is doing great as a yearling heifer for us right now. We usually dispose of the dead by taking them away from the other animals (so as to not attract predators or scavengers to the herd) and leaving the body to decompose. There was a rendering plant in our area that would pick up the dead carcasses, but they stopped servicing our area years ago. Burial would be nice, but we don’t have the equipment to do so.

Cows are pretty resilient as he said, the abscess is a compartmented infection by the body (kind of like a big pimple on a human). Once he drained the puss/infection from the abscess, the body will naturally begin healing the area. On the other hand, if the abscess had grown too large and ruptured, the risk of bacteria entering increases odds of healing, creating necrotic tissue and most likely proud flesh forming; thereby creating more of a problem, necessitating the need to evacuate the wound and for antibiotic.

I never thought about what a cow farmers life would be like until I came across a few videos a few weeks ago and today finding your video. Is it normal for cows birthing to be difficult? Many videos I have seen so far look like some have a hard time giving birth. Also, the poor bill calf looked extremely dry, never seen something like that before.

Not normal at all. Out of 40 cows that calved for us this spring, this was the only calf we had to pull. This one was very dry as a result of it dying probably a day or two (maybe longer) before the mother started to show signs that something was wrong. Thanks for watching!

I know the smell and once you have smelled necrotic tissue and abscesses/pus/drainage of all types to manure you never forget the smell and can very quickly identify it. I walk onto a farm and I can tell what animals they have from the manure smells and everyone says "how did you know that?" because at one point I have shoveled it and had to deal with the animal. Necrotic tissue like he mentions in the video is a scent that lasts and it lingers on you and you feel/smell like you need a decontamination shower before you go in the house and sometimes we would just undress and use the hose from the house to wash ourselves and possibly our coveralls or you roll them up and they go into the wash immediately. You walk into the house in your skippies having an outdoor shower with the hose because your family (for me a Mom) wont let you sit on the couch otherwise.

Hello to you AWESOME folks of Hurricane Creek Farms! Brand new sub!! I love the graphic (blood & guts!lol) things!! Anything that could be deemed "medical!" I have a 20 year career in mental health (worked in a mental institution!lol), HEY! I HEARD THAT!! Someone in the back ROLLED THEIR EYES VERY LOUDLY & said "Well, THAT explains a lot!" lmao Over the years I've accumulated a lot of medical knowledge/experience, as well! Both subjects fascinate me & I try to NEVER stop LEARNING!! A great deal of the medical training has come in EXTREMELY handy! I've WITNESSED car accidents, have stopped & helped at MANY accident scenes (Ok, who am I kidding! I stop at every single one that I see!lol) & at EVERY scene, I was the ONLY person that had ANY training!! Anyway, I love seeing HOW procedures are done, animal OR HUMAN!! And, with humans, I analyze EVERYONE!lol The psychology of ppl & figuring out what makes them tick, is my favorite!lol. I know it's probably too late now, but, in a case like the cow that's not making milk for the calf and, since you ALSO just had a calf that wasn't alive, is it possible to milk the mother of the stillborn & use THAT in the bottle to feed calves in trouble?! I know it's happened when a cow that miscarried, will sort of adopt the calf & let them nurse, but, if mommy is that protective of her baby ALREADY, she probably wouldn't tolerate her calf nursing from the other cow? Just a couple of thoughts/questions that popped into my little coconut! And, I'm an OLD FART, so I HAVE to blurt things out, or I'll forget! lol

Yes, that is an idea that could work. An orphaned calf can also sometimes be grafted onto a cow that may have lost her calf. Or, if a cow has twins around the same time another loses a calf, you can try that. That’s even better if you can get them to do all the work for you! Thanks for watching!

The cow ended up making a full recovery. The bottle calf is still nursing it’s mother, but she didn’t have much milk. We’ve actually since quit supplementing her with the bottle because she got to where she’d barely take anything. I think that cow was probably milking better than we gave her credit for. My day job is a dog & cat vet. Thanks for watching!

I live in a rural area in SWern VA and have been around a few farm animals.Watching these type videos have helped my "gag reflex". I enjoy watching but hated to see that big calf dead.
