In his defense, even Regina's happiest songs are tinged with just a bit of melancholy. The sound and the lyrics. That's one of the things that first drew me to her music. How about "Chemo Limo"?

I remember seeing her open for Dresden Dolls back in 04 at a tiny club when I was 18. She played “Poor Little Rich Boy” with one hand on the piano and keeping time with a drum stick in the other. Thought that was cool as hell. Don’t know if I would have gotten into her before that. Checked out her first album and song with the strokes. I was like alright, I hear you ❤️ I like the weird stuff.

Regina Spektor is gold. I've heard that she has never written her lyrics down, so each performance could be different lyrically, but amazingly. Saw her at the House of Blues in Dallas in the mid 2000s. What an amazing show.

I am thinking you guys might enjoy exploring the music of Tori Amos. I'm a Jazz & Prog rock guy, but Tori's music just hits me so hard, like very few can. Tori is piano prodigy, really interesting as a composer, integrates her voice and breath with the piano in a unique way, has an improvisational quality that she brings to each performance, and is also gifted at covering the music of others in different genres (led zepplin, nirvana, et...). Also an interesting song writer. Check out some of youtube performances there are loads. If you like that maybe checkout something from 'Boys for Pele' an album she produced, where she plays harpsichord, and incorporates horns and a selection of really varied songs. Just a really unique, and gifted artist.

I've heard she's amazing live.
@sethleon21583 жыл бұрын
@@cometogether999 I think so. She makes old songs fresh with her approach to performance, and rarely have I seen her less than completely engaged and present live. She takes criticism for what can seem to be overt sexuality in the mannerisms she displays connecting with the audience. One of her heroes was Robert Plant, and you don't see that type criticsim leveled at male fronts, so I don't find it fair-minded. She is no doubt idiosynctatic/quirkly/unique, but I find her performance style spell-binding, expressing what is running through her in communion with her piano and audience. Maybe I am under her spell, but I can't get enough of her live performances, especially 2003 and prior.

Love the song and the performance. Feels almost intimate. I have the same reaction as your husband to the minor chords in music and that heartstrings pulled feeling with certain performers. In the prog realm you'd want to include Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant, Kate Bush, and many more. My kryptonite; though, is Tracy Chapman, one note and the tears form in the corners of my eyes, she could be singing the Star Spangled Banner and I'd still weep. But it also makes it harder to listen often, it can be too much, overwhelming But I think I'm going to look into Regina some more, I know I've heard her voice in tracks used in movies or TV

I absolutely fell in love with her music at first listen. It still never gets old to me. I _wish_ someone had captured my first reaction to hearing her. (I think the first thing I heard was the alternate version of 'Better"). I immediately went to see her in concert on the 2006 True Colors tour. Lots of great talent at that show including Cyndi Lauper and the B-52s, but I went just for her. I say that her music has a kind of restrained optimism. By the way, suggestion in the "weird" spectrum: singer/harpist Joanna Newsom. Start with the song '81 and the whole _Have One On Me_ album to ease into her voice. It takes getting used to but she has incredible musical and songwriting talent.
@cellfractionation2 жыл бұрын
Yes Joanna Newsom! But I would recommend any song from her album Ys. Especially Only Skin and Cosmia. Also, maybe Fiona Apple is in some ways similar to Regina Spektor? Very nice voice, with an airy upper range and a full lower range. They are both great songwriters and are emotional, relatable, etc. When the Pawn... is an excellent album.

@@phoenixshade3 yes!! No fillers! Exactly what I wanted to say! What else do you listen to, my friend?
@phoenixshade32 жыл бұрын
@@cellfractionation I would say my tastes are very eclectic, with a focus on 80s post-punk (Siouxsie and the Banshees is among my all-time favs), 90s alternative, 00s nu-metal... I don't know what to call a lot of the music I listen to other than "avante garde," because it breaks old genres and defines new ones. But I have always had a soft spot for female vocals in just about any genre. Tori Amos, Kate Bush, The Pretenders, etc. Also big on classical from Mozart forward, classic jazz (not a fan of most new jazz), hip-hop and rap with a soulful message, like De La Soul, Arrested Development, or Flobots...
