A few seconds ago I was watching an episode of The Leftovers. All of a sudden, one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a long while is played on a scene. I just remember the words "God can be funny". I stop the episode, come on KZbin, search and find this jewel here and this wonderful singer. My most precious discovery of the year.

Regina Spektor was one of the ones we both loved and this was his favorite of hers. I was likely the last person he hung out with. He was 38. It sure is different watching this now. RIP Brent.. Miss ya buddy.

I just found out about the sad news earlier today. This was the first song that came to mind. While I rarely RARELY listen to her songs, I’m a huge fan of Regina and I absolutely love her, I hold her and her music so sacred that I don’t listen to them often because they make me cry. I never knew her father personally but somehow learning of his passing hurts in a way that feels similar to as if it was my own relative who passed. Maybe it’s just the impact Regina had on me that made it so. It is never easy dealing with loss, let’s all wish Regina and the Spektor family peace and love and resolution, and may we honor her father by continuing to support her and her work. He is now up there laughing heartily with God. Покой с вечным миром, Илья Спектор. 💝

People aren't hearing the song right, she's saying no one laughs at God in these terrible situations, we make jokes about God, or people brush him off like he doesn't exist(whether you believe or not, doesn't matter), but when the going gets tough we aren't laughing at God, we're praying, and that last bit "laughing with God" that's the tearing up, the way we hysterically cry during a tragedy, just as God is.
@attix2eden

I disagree. I believe she's saying that no one mocks God when the tragedies befall one of us. She's saying that God is laughing at us. He's laughing WITH the people laughing at us.

Gregory Kirsten , that's it. We are here to listen to a song by an artist that believes in God, and to comment about her perspective and her song. If you want to troll about it, please go somewhere else. I personally agree with cpr196123, only that the last bit, I think she means that, when we made jokes about him, we really didn't mean to mock him, we just found the situation funny, and that He understands it that way. I base my interpretation on an interview Regina gaver where she talked about her beliefs. Really worth seeing if you are a fan or hers :)

doesn't matter wether god exists or not... she sings about people and what people do. as long as there are people laughing at or praying to god this song has its validity. it is not a song about an entity, but a song about the very people you are just arguing with... a way to interpret the song (as far as i am concerned): people are full of themselves and arrogant, when they feel good or secure; the moment things are turning bad, they suddenly discover their dignity and humility....

My interpretation of this is how no one believes in God when things are in their control; but when faced with a situation beyond their own control it's easier to look someone else to fix things, even if that 'person' is sometimes laughed at or disregarded.

She isn't hating on athiests (I am one btw). This is an amazing song, whether you believe in God or not. She's simply saying that people constantly misread religion as an excuse for terrible horrible behaviour "on the day they realise that the last sight they'll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes" or just downright selfishness: treating God like a genie who can fix their problems. She's not hating those who don't believe, she is pointing out that there are way to many people in this world who use belief or non-belief as an excuse for terrible behaviour. And also that in the end, it is the human condition to look for help in a time of need and sometimes God is the only person (even though I don't believe, I know I would prey if I was in half of these situations she lists...)

Tilda Adade I appreciate your interpretation. I've never really been able to wrap my mind around what she's trying to say in this song. It's always seemed like a weird non-sequater kinda theme. Of course no one is laughing in the immediate face of tragedy... believers in the supernatural and others alike. We keep our minds and our hearts fixed on the struggles that stand before us. There's no time for god when "hands are wrapped around your neck"

@toniduval4350

It's a pretty disastrous place to be in when you can't think clearly during a very critical time in your life - that's a recipe for abject failure. When you find yourself in a situation in life where you are completely helpless and can't better your circumstance under your own power, nobody with a heart would laugh at you for hoping there's a higher, benevolent power that could get you out of your crappy situation in a safe and responsible manner, if that higher power wanted to help. There is nothing shameful in asking anyone or anything for help when you're desperate. It is pretty heartless to mock people when they desperately need help, however.

@@xredhead7135xLol, some people do turn to Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling, the authoress of the Harry Potter was living in poverty before turning to her characters and in doing so making millions off them. Unlike Rowling, who turned to writing in desperate times, a great many more people have turned to God and have testified to having considerably more success at turning their sad circumstances around, or at the very least finding the strength to gracefully endure their unfortunate circumstances. Point is, God has a better track record of saving people than writing does. That ought to count for something, even in your secular mind.

I think that the message that Regina Spektor is trying to get across is that our opinion of God seems to change willy nilly depending on the situation we are in. The constant mention that "No one's laughing with God" whenever she is stating a depressing or sorrowful scenario highlights the fact that sometimes people believe God is evil and playing some sort of cruel trick on them when something bad happens. The phrase "But God can be funny..." tells of how, when life is good, people go back to thinking that God is just and good. The song shows that most of the time, people just want to blame god for any sorrowful event, and praise him when things are going good.

The song means exactly how it's written. People laugh and mock others who believe in God, but once a tragedy happens, they're no longer laughing. She mentions how non-believers call him a genie and how they say he hates us because he allows bad things to happen (they forget about how he gave us free will). Sometimes they'll actually turn to God and pray during a crisis. The ending when she says we're all laughing with God is because it's like God and the believers saying "who's laughing now?" Because if he's real, believers and God are no longer the joke. I saw in another comment about an interview how she said "I love myths, and I love stories, and I love religion, and I love traditions, and I love atheism, and I love existentialism, and I love all kinds of things, you know." I think she's trying to confirm that she's not trying to be preachy and she respects atheists. But just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean you should make fun of it. There are times I question if God is real, but I wouldn't ever have the gall to mock him.

But God could be funny At a cocktail party while listening to A good god-themed joke Or when the crazies say he hates us And they get so red in The head you'd think they're about to choke God could be funny When told he'll give you money If you just pray the right way And when presented like a genie Who does magic like Houdini Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket And Santa Claus God could be so hilarious Ha-ha, ha-ha No one laughs at God in a hospital No one laughs at God in a war No one's laughing at god When they've lost all they got And they don't know what for No one laughs at God on the day they realize That the last sight they'll ever see Is a pair of hateful eyes No one's laughing at God When they're saying their goodbyes But God could be funny At a cocktail party while listening to A good god-themed joke Or when the crazies say he hates us And they get so red in The head you'd think they're about to choke God could be funny When told he'll give you money If you just pray the right way And when presented like a genie Who does magic like Houdini Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket And Santa Claus God could be so hilarious No one laughs at God in a hospital No one laughs at God in a war No one laughs at God in a hospital No one laughs at God in a war No one's laughing at God in a hospital No one's laughing at God in a war No one's laughing at God When they're starving or freezing Or so very poor No one's laughing at God No one's laughing at God No one's laughing at God We're all laughing with God

When you pray, your are talking to yourself. All prayer is, is positive self talk. That's why it works (sometimes). There's no man in the sky helping you because you asked him to. In fact that's a very selfish and naive way to think. God answers your prayers but, not the straving child's, for food, or the parents with a newborn with cancer. Only an evil God would do that. Take a simple philosophy class.

Heard this before The Leftovers but was a great placement in the season for this song. I love Matt. Not because he is a Christian but because he tries so hard to maintain his integrity. He walks the walk that so many other Christians simply talk. He is flawed, he makes mistakes, he is a human being but he never gives up on trying to be better than he is. Whether a person believes or doesn't believe in God is irrelevant in a way. It's about leaving the world a better place than when you entered it and treating others you encounter with kindness. In the episode he was asked what his favorite book was and he said Job. Everyone says Job when asked that question because it implies that you strive to be faithful. But Matt, the character, is himself a metaphor for the book of Job. God has "allowed" Matt to suffer and when something can be taken from it usually is. But, he never curses God. He doubles down he presses on with the good fight when others would have given up on God.

He does not walk the walk. Matt Jamison is a classic example of a false convert. He drops the F-Bomb with zero conviction and says he swears proudly when talking to Garvey. He´s also Episcopal, one of the worst unBiblical denominations under the umbrella definition of "Christianity". No one born again, would act like that let alone, be apart of such an evil organisation. No one can leave the world a better place than when they entered it since the world is a fallen creation and we are sinners who inherently make it worse. The only thing, we can do to be saved from the hell we deserve, is to repent of our sins and have faith in Christ whose blood is the atonement for our evil deeds. God bless, amen.

The first song I had ever listened to by her was Eet. Then Us and so on.. But once I listened to this one I felt something so moving. I am a bit religious but when I listen to this song it's not fully about that for me. It's a image she presents through the song that captures my emotions. Yes, I have my views about what she is saying but the song is so beautiful and everytime I hear it..I get so overwhelmed with emotions. Truely great musician.

I interpret her lyrics as "You pull god from your head as something to help you to get through hard times, and you don't need it otherwise". So, when you are mentally weak, you need a "god" (something in your head) to help you, that's why you laugh with it when you are OK, because it's always there in your head, it's your strength. She also criticizes believers, especially the bold ones. Very atheistic song if you ask me.

this song is soooo biblical. in my opinion, shes saying that people (even christians) have created their own version of "God". (when presented like a genie who does magic like houdini line). Shes saying that people want to believe in a God that caters to our wants, rather than our needs. And that people think it's okay to laugh at God because everyone has a misconstrued idea of who He is.

You do know that there are a ton of religions and even versions of the same bible, right? Not only that put from church to church pastors and priest use (not all) their congregations the bible to their own wants, spreading not just religion but their own truths. In some instances hate. Everyone does not have a misconstrued idea of whom he is, to say that means that your idea, your truth is correct and everyone else is wrong. Which adds you to that list. True everyone does have their own Idea whom he is, but who is wrong? Only god knows the true.

Israel Rodriguez I don't really agree with you on that. Yes, there are different versions of the bible and people do twist it to fit into their own beliefs, but the message of the bible (directly translated from the original Hebrew version) is explicit in a lot of areas. But, it's also full of paradoxes, contradicting itself all the time. So I see what you mean, but not completely. You can't just dismiss the bible as uninterpretable.

Paetyn McAleenan People say that the Bible contradicts itself "all the time", but I've yet to see an example of this that isn't wildly misconstrued. I can't help but think that people who say this feel like they see something obvious that all the genius Bible scholars haven't seen over the years. I'm not trying to argue with you, but could you just back up your statement?

Katie Schultz I found this chart quite interesting. Perhaps a bit of an eye opener for you, no offence intended. www.project-reason.org/bibleContra_big.pdf Also "Genius" is an entirely subjective stance is it not? I don't hold that any person who picks up one book becomes a genius on any subject at all. The mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on folly.

Many of these (ex. Where is says "what did the centurion say to Jesus) are like saying "Which country is in North America?" If I say Canada is in North America, but I also say the US is in North America. I'm not contradicting myself. The problem that people run into when they try to say LOOK AT ALL THE CONTRADICTIONS in the Bible, is that they are largely ignorant of the teachings of the Bible. Which is understandable; The Bible is massive and holds hundreds of accounts of events. But I'm a firm believer that before you make a judgement call, you need to understand the context of the thing you're making a judgement about.

No matter what the real reason for the song is, I think we should all just take it and savor it in our own ways. The true beauty of this song is not what it means to each individual person, but in fact the idea that it can mean so much to so many people. Because if we each take it in our own way, and never question what others think about the exact same thing, then we can be happy and the song will be heartfelt without all this arguing. So please, I only ask that we enjoy what's been given.

@@Romans8-9 Yes it's correct to say that "truth" is not based anyone's opinion. However in my view many of us are seeking a path towards truth and the insights of artists can be helpful signposts. As can heavily contested scriptures, philosophy, psychology and so on. I personally find the notion of a punishing , vengeful God to be ultimately incoherent but I recognise that others have a different view.

I know I’m late to this but I really love this song. I’m a person of faith but always keep an open mind to others & never judge & have been fortunate to have atheist friends who respect my faith as much as I understand why they don’t believe. I kinda feel this song is a lil tongue & cheek way of that saying that a crashing plane can turn an atheist to religion joke. I don’t think it’s a hating on any side but just an objective observation. I think it’s about how people tend to laugh at the absurdity of the belief when bad people of faith spew hate or the idea of the granting of wishes mentality(which I very much agree are a problem), but then get angry & blame god when bad things happen. It points out both sides. It hits me home because even as someone of faith, I’ve dropped to lows where I got angry at god when things went wrong, particularly with this past year when everything was going wrong from deaths, breakups, & financial ruin. I’m not like that now & now keep positive, but this song really puts things into perspective

Some of the truest lyrics I've ever heard! I'm agnostic and I do like the occasional God joke (come on, they can be so funny). But oh when those terrifying moments in life come, logic goes out the window, my Christian upbringing bursts in through the door and I catch myself praying, doing the cross sign and feeling slightly guilty about all the God jokes. [The Leftovers brought me here too, btw]
7 жыл бұрын
Well I could tell you it's ok to have humor. If you're christian then your God is full of love & wouldn't be mad at you and send you the plague to punish you for being a foe. It's GOD, He doesn't need to prove anything to humans because he is not human, ergo, he doesn't have low self-esteem issues. Joke around, say your prayers. Everything will be fine :) But it's totally understandable because religion feeds from people's fear, maybe that's why you feel guilty.

Regina addressed the meaning, or lack thereof. It was basically a conglomeration of thoughts and she said that she doesn't have any set belief, that's she's suspicious of people who do. lol She said she loves atheists and existentialists and that she writes based off random thoughts or experiences. I'll quote the interview below: --- Some of your listeners have said that your latest album, Far, had too many religious undertones for their liking, and some have even called it “preachy”. As a listener myself, I feel your references are just drawn from your philosophies, maybe related to your background or to myths and stories that you enjoy. What are your thoughts on this? *Spektor: Well, I mean, to tell you the truth I haven’t seen a lot of people saying that, but maybe you know more about it because you’re in the blog world. (Laughing) So I guess there’s a lot more talking there. Sometimes people treat records as if, “you sit down and now you write a record”, so they say stuff like that. I always hear people say, “Oh, Begin To Hope is such a more maturely written record than Soviet Kitsch,” or something like that. And to me it’s like, half of the songs on Begin To Hope are older than the songs on Soviet Kitsch! Right! And it’s the same on Far, isn’t it? Some of those songs, you’ve been playing live for years, haven’t you? *Spektor: Some songs on Far are older than both of them, because I included some of the songs from the time of my second record. I think the way a record comes together, it’s not really like, a reflection. Nothing is like, “and now I sit down and I write a preachy religious record”! I think I just end up… You know, I’m always thinking about philosophy, and religion, and spirituality; and how those things go together or how they really don’t go together, and where they help each other and where they really push on each other. And I love myths, and I love stories, and I love religion, and I love traditions, and I love atheism, and I love existentialism, and I love all kinds of things, you know, and my thoughts kind of fluctuate. So I think I’ve always written songs that are looking at it from all these different ways and so you know, it’s just like, it’s all over the place. Your songs always have some sort of social commentary, whether it’s a criticism or just an observation. So what are your views on humanity and our society? *Spektor: They’re all over the place! Just like my songs, you know? I mean, I think that’s why music is there, you know? In like one show, you could express 10 different viewpoints on the same thing because to me, I feel like I’m looking at it differently. In a show I’ll play “Laughing With”, and “Man Of A Thousand Faces”, and “Machine”. Those are three different ways to look at the world. You know, I don’t have, and I don’t really like-(pauses, probably to avoid offending). I don’t have any kind of set beliefs and I’m very suspicious of people who do. To me it’s like, you know, there’s a lot of people that hijack religion, for example, and try and sell it-spiritual economics, I think there’s a name for it. I hate that shit! But I’m also really very interested in religion and really I think that some of it really… brings a lot of good, you know. It’s like one of those things, when you’re reading a book, and the first paragraph is really great and the second paragraph sucks, but it’s [neither evil nor] good. I think music is just there for people to go into. So I will always write songs about anything that I think about. To look at a song as a thesis, is kind of silly to me. Then it’s just like, it’s what you were talking about, “being trapped in your art”. I think there are enough preachers out there; I’m not here to preach. I’m not telling people how to live, but I like thinking about how people live and looking at different things, and I will always do that.
