I just served first time ever (by my own hands) my Husqvarna Cl 21 with your help. The longer band required replacement and it was a bit work to find one. With luck one lady gave away a similar, half emptied machine in the city nearby. I oiled my machine as well and now it purrs so nicely. Thank you and greetings from Finland!

Most of the people showing machines are always hiding knowledge.. like Scott from CowCountryVintageSewing.. guy always says his machines are the best...come on the machines are only as good as they were designed. In this video you really help out the sewing community for this particular machine. Owe some on you part.. truly thank you.

Nostalgic memories of this pretty machine! Dad had bought it in 1963 after its life as a show piece at a dealer. From the beginning I was ultra interested in this electrical marvel, like you called it. All of us kids were allowed to sew on it early on, like at 8 yrs. One day mum revealed that you can sew an array of decorative stitches on it. By letting me figure everything out by myself, it became a lesson well learned. The most amazing thing is the straight / zigzag presser foot. I hope everybody had the opportunity to experience it. It gives multiple possibilities to align stitching adjusting one’s gaze on the different notches between the ’toes’. Amazing piece really. Thanks for this video, I'll save the link for the future! edit: year of purchase.

1981 - I walked into a sewing machine shop in Howick; "I'm after a machine, don't care how old if it works, for mending duty." "OK, I'll keep an eye open." A few days later and it's "Colin, I've got your machine." In I went and he seats himself behind this green machine that was purring away really slowly; a click and it took off at what seemed like 3000rpm, with virtually no noise! (Mum's Bernina Rekord of 1957 noisy and slow by comparison) "That's way too good for me!" "Have you got $120?" So I coughed up the dough and left with this rather hefty machine before he could change his mind. It is virtually identical to the machine in your video and condition-wise, if you can imagine a pampered 2 year old car offered for sale after grooming, that's what I got. I'm now 75 and will only part with it when I kick the bucket! Col, Bay of Islands.

It's so cool to see that not only husqvarna's gardening tools has spread around the globe but also these (in sweden) classic green sewing machines. I recently bought my own CL 21 from a local sewing machine shop since I grew up using the very same machine. I've not had the chance to use it a lot yet but I know it was a well made investment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

The waer on this machine in the video is visible but it still does the job. I learnt how to sew on my mothers "Crocodile" as we call them here in Sweden and was very sad as she changed is for a newer machine. I have now bough one for myself and it is very nice to sew on. The machine i bought for 35 USD was with all the extras but did not work properly. Some oil later the machine was back in working order with no extra maintenace needed. Amazing quality. The gearbox for slower and more powerful sewing is a feature that i really like but lacks on newer machines. The automatic disengagement of the machine when vinding the bobbin is also one step ahead of many machines even today. I think the quality of this machines is at the pinnacle of machanic sewing machines. Bernina and Pfaff have thier own take on failfree high quality, undestructable machines from the same period, but i find the "anti jamming feature" on the Husqvarna one point above the rest. The only downside is that the Zig-Zag is not especially wide compared to modern machines. But you can´t have it all for 35 USD. (Going rate for a working machine like this in Sweden is about 150 USD.)

This video was wonderful and a huge help in guiding me in the maintenance and cleaning of a 21E that I found out on the street for trash pickup with the pedal, bobbins and extra feet. Looked at the belts and the motor brushes which were all fine. Also had someone check the electrical which was also good and after an oiling its running very well with a new needle and thread. The plastic covers are pretty cracked but overall a neat find that now has a new home. Again Thanks so much! Cheers from Germany

I'm another who found a thrown -out machine in the street complete with everything. Could hardly believe my luck. Just overjoyed. Though unfamiliar with this machine i could see immediately its high quality. After almost 40 years with the little Elna portable, never a comfy machine, my 'new' 21e is a serious upgrade. This is a really superb vid. Many many thanks. It's great to see stuff in real time, with sometimes several attempts to do things. So much in mechanics is physical-like screw tensioning, reaching into tight spaces, moving things against resistance, jiggling and maneuvering tricky bits to fit. Orientation. The nature of the materials. Just excellent. A small question: if oil gets on the white gears is it a problem?

Thank you a lot for your great vids about old Husqvarna machines! I have a H Automatic 21 A and I just oiled and cleaned it according to the manual and your video. There are still couple of problems I have faced that I couldn't solve. First, the zigzag.... the needle doesn't move sideways fast enough. Therefore, in order to sew zigzag I have to run the machine slowly and keep the width at 4. I have tried to figure where the problem is but I haven't succeeded. Second, now I use weird words, since I don't remember what the parts truly are in English... so second, the little knob that should be turned to the right, half turn to 6 o'clock, in order to sew buttons or embroidery or freestyle. To keep the teeth down and be able to move the fabric wherever I want to. That know only moves a bit, around to 1 or 2 o'clock. I've had the plate in the bottom open, so I have seen the small plate that hits the thin bar when ever I turn that knob, but I simply don't get it, where the problem is. Any suggestions? I would take the machine to the service but I don't think they know much about these machines anymore....

I was so thankful for this video since I solved the problem with the handwheel not moving (but I could still sew using the pedal). Now the handwheel works BUT I cannot sew with the pedal anymore... I opened it and the belt (long/main one) doesn't move at all when I press the pedal. I just hear the sound of the motor. I checked multiple times by "toggling" the bobbin on and off and the bobbin belt works, but not the main belt... What to do? :(

Hi there, loved your video. I, like many others, have inherited my machine from my mother-in-law. And I do not have instructions so your video on how to thread the bobbin and thread the machine was most helpful. Everything seems to be working on this machine other than it does not advance the fabric. Do you have any ideas on why the fabric is not advancing and just stays in place as the machine starts the stitch?

PLEASE HELP: Hi, and thanks for a great and very informative video. I wonder if you could use your tons of experience to help me sort out a few questions. I recently picked up a Husqvarna Classic 21e at a flea marked (didn´t know anything about it at the time) for about $15 (blood price, I know) . It virtually looks like it´s been purchased as a wedding gift, tried and then left in a closet for 60 years (which is probably pretty close to the truth). Finish looks brand new, inside bits and bobs look unused apart from a little lint under the stitch plate and all the woolen oil pad thingies are bone dry. In short, pretty darn close to mint condition. NOW:Lately I´ve tried to find out as much as I can about this little gem. What baffles me is that all the american versions of this machine (the Vikings 21E) seem to be much more powerful than the european versions (Husqvarna Electric 21E). The Vikings seem to come in 1 or 1.5 Amp versions, while all the Husqvarna Electrics say 80W on the backplate. What gives? Why are the Vikings so much more powerful? Or are they. Can they do the same heavy duty tasks? Is it even the same machine? Please help me get my head around this if you can. Thanks in advance. Grunde

I have a 21E that I love and have sewed with for more than 45 years. Yesterday, I had a loud bang, some smoke and a burning smell. I found that a whole lot of silver paper and plastic had been caught up in the belt and from what I can see, the drive belt appears to have contacted a wire and ripped it out shorting out the electrical system. The light is still operating. Do you think this could be repaired? Where are you located? Great video on this wonderful little machine by the way. If it can not be repaired, what on earth would I replace it with that can just about sew anything, especially in low gear. Cheers

Got this same machine in excellent condition, though I’m bummed out that it refuses to run. It’s either the pedal (which has something clinking around) and/or the stuck cam (the locking arm won’t move all the way down since someone pushed a cam all the way in. Thus making it stuck in place). I’m trying to hype myself up to take the machine apart myself so I can fix the cam area.

And then if you do press the Foot Controller, will it detect a fault in the Foot Controller? Also, is that a detector that detects 90 to 1000 volts of fault, or is it the one that detects the smaller amounts?

Hi Mr In Stitches, My Dad bought a Viking CL21A Serial 2177, at a thrift store about 25 30 years ago. It sat in the car port for about 20 years. I aquired it about 10 years ago. It came in original carry case, warrenty documents stating that it was first sold in Sept 1961 and who it was sold to, ha! However, no users manuel. I thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial videos, thank you. I have learned so much about this wondrful machine because of you. I need to replace a control knob, the knob with the numbers 1-5 that moves the needle left, center, or right. The plastic material the knob is made of has crumbled and broke. I still have the screw, metal pin, and the metal slotted slide attatchment that fits at the bottom of control knob. Question, I have looked for this part on the internet, so far to no avail. Do you have one I could buy from you? Could you possibly direct me to someone in the western part of the United States who deals with parts for our beloved Husqvarnas? I have had the machine for about 50 yrs from new and it has been very reliable. Recently I wanted to make a mask for supermarket shopping during Covid 19 lockdown. I found the machine's stitch selector cam locked so couldn't do zigzag. I unscrewed the knob on the front and after a bit the whole lot fell off and I still couldn't release the selector cam until taking the back off. My problem is I can't seem to get the front knob and metal slide back on. There is also a small spring that flew out and I don't know where it belongs. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The bulb sits in it's fitting which is located inside a chrome cage under the arm of the machine. The chrome cage is hinged on the right side and if you pull the left side of the cage down, it should swing down on the hinge, exposing the bulb and its fitting.

Would you recommend later models too. combina/practica 3010 4020 etc? I also love my bernina 530-2 and my mother has a 19e. I think the bernina has better precision, stitch quality and decorative stitches while the huskies handle heavier material. I love the bernina’s removable top/bottom covers.

I haven't had a very good run with the later models. They seem quite weak in the pattern cam area and motor. Just about every one I come across has a split pattern cam assembly.

Hi Brad here. Best video! Great "How To", everything I needed to know...... I bought second hand the exact same model as this, (CI21) and I noticed the serial number inside the front cover of your machine (K2120153) and I was wondering if there is a code within these numbers, like there is for "Briggs and Stratton" engines, for working out the date of the machine? Mine is "L2127402". The 20 series from what I can find out was built between 1955 and 1966? I just would love to know everything about my machine... When I bought it from a second hand dealer in country South Australia in a little known town called Cobdogla, or Cobby as the locals call it, it was missing a few accessories; the bottom part of the bakelite accessory container, a couple of presser feet, the attachable work table and the precious manual. I found a downloadable pdf for a manual for model "21 A" but I dearly want the users manual for a "CI 21". I just want as close to original equipment as I can possibly get. I'm not bothered if its not an original manual, just a printable pdf will do. Even the site husqvarnaviking doesn't seem to have it. Anyone who finds one in an old draw should post it on ebay right away! Lol. Again great instructional video, I will be returning to it in the future!

Hi , just wondering if you could kindly tell me how to remove the capacitor and reconnect the wires . When I attempted, I found the lower set of wires going to the coils of the motor and as I am not a “professional electrician “ I felt uncomfortable to proceed further. I would appreciate if you could kindly tell me how to proceed removing the capacitor and get started with the motor. I am really “ cheesed off “ with the complex connection of those wires . Further, I fail to understand why are there 4 wires ., two on top and two at the bottom of this capacitor? My other Viking ( Viking 5220 ) has just two prongs and to remove them was “ literally a cakewalk “ . While this one on my Viking 21A is not only complex but giving me heartache, let alone the machine is totally nonfunctional! I look forward to your early reply and help. Thanks, Ramana .
@InStitches
@InStitches 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'll try to explain how the capacitors are set up but I would recommend taking your machine to an electrician or sewing machine repair person. From memory, the capacitor set can be bypassed. Don't quote me on any of this because this is from memory and any modifications you make could make the machine dangerous. You have four wires, two on top and two on bottom of the capacitor set. From memory, you clip the wires top left and bottom left and join them and do the same for the top right and bottom right. Make sure an electrician checks it before plugging it in because, as I say, I'm working from memory.

Wonderful video. Thank you! I collected my new 60s model of this machine this morning and was able to follow along and get it all clean, oiled and running beautifully. A question... I fixed the needle position following your directions, but the feet are still slightly left of centre. Are there any adjustments for this?
@InStitches
@InStitches 5 жыл бұрын
This may be because the foot bar is slightly askew. It's easy to adjust but it may upset another adjustment which may cause an issue with feeding. You can try twisting the foot by hand but I wouldn't use much force and if you can move it, that would indicate the foot bar clamp screw is a little loose and needs tightening.

I am in the UK. Would you have any tips, please? If I cannot fix it I am looking at a class 19 on Sunday. In the photos it looks as good as new so I am hopeful it will be in good working order. Would you recommend a class 19 too? Thank you very much

Hi! Thank you for this excellent video! I'm renovating my Grandmothers' old Husqvarna Automatic 21 that I inherited about 10 years ago. It's in great shape except it needs new belts (I found a set of new original ones on ebay) and one of the gears in the reduction gearbox has lost some teeth. These are hard to find for the Automatic 21 but I found several for 6430. The assembly looks different to me but I just need the plastic gear and those look at least very similar. Are they interchangeable between these models?

Thank you so much for this video! Im in the proces of buying this machine and this was very helpful. Could you tell me whether this machine can sew with thick denim thread?
@InStitches
@InStitches 5 жыл бұрын
I find it does struggle to sew denim jean hems where you turn the hem under twice; it can't quite handle the felled seams when you've effectively got 12 layers of denim. Even when the tension is very high the top thread tends to jam in the hook area and even with good belts they tend to slip. You can turn the machine over by hand through the extremely thick parts but it just can't handle it. You may get away with just turning the hem under once. I have found the best domestic machines for hemming jeans are the very old Singer machines, like the treadle and hand crank type, or a 201K and the like. The Bernina semi industrial also does a good job. An industrial if the best way to deal with jeans sewing.
@InStitches
@InStitches 5 жыл бұрын
Within reason. I tried it and it will do light denim. It doesn't handle hemming normal jeans with a double turned in hem on the lumpy seams very well even with the tension cranked up.
