Just kidding! Settle down :-)
So the last video I made that spoke to this machine had some great comments and support as well as some very emotional responses from some who hate the modern GT products, those who love green paint (JD X700 and X500 series), those who feel that the modern term GT should mean PTO shafts and 3-point arms, those who hate Husqvarna and those who hate... well.... everything.
Luckily, my skin is thick and I don't chase into the comments section looking to argue or educate the world. I understand some of the points that are being made.... and I feel that as time has moved on, the concept of the old day GT is still alive and well..... in what we call a SubCompact.
Today, a GT is a HD riding tractor. It's not a tiller, it's not plowing pastures. Instead, it is doing lawn maintenance on rough/sloped property and pulling 450 LB lawn rollers, 200 LB broadcast seeders and chemical sprayers. It may plow your driveway of snow, it may haul your firewood in a lawn cart. But for the big work of breaking earth, today you reach to a modern SCUT instead of the modern GT.
But hey, look at the amazing cut from that "Clear Cut" fabricated deck! Wow!

Yes sir it's the king! It still is in 2021 too! I absolutely love mine and the supposed "weak frame" claims are easily fixable with a welder and a little bit of tube steel! After that it will handle and pull any ground engaging attachments you want to put on it, front or rear. They are an absolute beast for the money and lets face it nothing else comes close to that sexy Husqvarna orange paint job! Yes I wash, wax, and ArmorAll my tractor far more often than my car or truck, lol!

I got mine Aug/Sept 2018, it is a workhorse with the locking diff. There are some 'features' that I do not care for, but mostly it is quite good. I had a large 6' across maybe 20' long and 10' spread branch come down, I tied a line to it put the tractor diff into lock and pulled that down into the ravine that I dump yard waste into. I also have ≈3 + acres and other than no ' maint manual' avail I like it. The blades hold an edge very well, I didn't sharpen until 25 Hrs. Best of luck to you with yours.

Nice video. I currently have a Poulan 700EX I've had for 13 years and still runs fine, and am looking at the TS 348 XD. The Poulan looks just like the Husqvarna but lighter. I've not had any problems with the Poulan now owned by Husqvarna so figure it will be a good mower as well.

TS354XD has cast iron front, commercial grade ground engaging transmission and 25hp Kawasaki. With 3point hitch, plow, disc, front bucket, and rear tote its just fine for 1 to 2 acres. Dragging trees, preparing the garden, toting cut wood and rock/gravel. Sounds good to me for 3800 bucks + 1600 for all attachments.

That did a fine job Larry. My Husqvarna 2654 cuts just like that. It doesn't have the updated heavy duty mower deck like yours but in the 5 years I've owned it i have never once had to level the deck. Thats saying a lot too as i have a couple acres to mow too. Really like these machines.

The 2654 is (sadly) one of the yard tractors dressed up as a GT 😥 It has the K46 rear axle, if you Google your model number you'll find endless posting of the failures. They took what could have been a great machine and tossed an extremely light duty rear axle/transmission in it.

My John Deere D-140 can not begin to handle that slope and scares me when I try to side hill it. Looks like this Husqvana TS354XD is what I need. Sure will make my life allot easier to cut the grass. Just bought a TS354XD. Great machine for $3800. One complaint is an occasional Mohawk strip left behind in the overcuts. Will look into the issue. As this review indicated the quality of the cut is near commercial grade. Very good. For $1800 dollars less than a comparable John Deere class in series, The Husqvarna with electronic locking differential and stability wins. Deere X series are a bit overpriced in my opinion.

Purchased a Husqvarna TS354 XD in 2019 new. Purchased with the 54 inch mower deck and the 42 inch two stage snow thrower with power lift. This garden tractor replaced my Toro 269H with the same features that I bought new back in 1998. The Husqvarna has been mowing and snow blowing for 2 seasons now, 121 hours. A couple of comments to make based on my experience with the TS354 XD. The engine exhaust is an issue. If you stop the tractor for even 2 minutes while mowing you will get a 6X6 grass burn on your lawn. The grass does not die but will take about 3 weeks to come back green. The engine exhaust is pushed straight down to the ground and this really heats up the grass. The exhaust port does not point down to the ground but all the brackets close to the exhaust redirect the air down as it comes out. Also I can melt a good section of my driveway letting the tractor idle during snow blowing. I have found that I make sure to drive the tractor onto my driveway before letting it sit and idle or turn the tractor off for even short time periods when working in the garden. No more grass burn doing this. I have been reviewing how to redirect the exhaust but have not found a modification that I like yet. 2nd issue is the front tire clip used to hold the tire on. I have had the front right tire fall off three times now. Turning puts pressure it seems on the tire clip used to hold the front tire on. This clip pops off and the tire slides off the spindle. My old Toro 269H had a cotter pin on the wheel spindle. The Husqvarna TS354 XD uses what my Dad always called a "Jesus clip" because each time you would try to put it on or take it off it would shoot off and slide somewhere on the garage floor for you to try and find. I have replaced the clip just this week to see if it was a bad clip. I am not the only one that has seen this occur based on different forum posts I have read. Recommendations I have seen online is to drill a 1/8th hole in the spindle where the clip goes and replace the clip with a cotter pin. Going to try that this summer if I have the tire fall off one more time. Also bought the replacement front bushing wheel bearing conversion kit off of Amazon for the front tires to see if these two things resolve the tire falling off issue. Wheel bearing conversion kit: www.amazon.com/Husqvarna-AYP-Craftsman-532124959-Conversion/dp/B073YFSYM9 3rd issue I have run into is that when mowing I seem to have a strip of grass that always seems to be missed as you turn during mowing. I mow our 3 acres of grass fairly high so this may be the issue. Have reviewed leveling the mower deck and have sharpened the blades every other mowing, swapping in my spare blade set that I bought. Still working on this bug to find a solution. 4th issue gas tank gas gauge is a window just below the driver seat. Cannot really see the gas level very well. Again I was spoiled by my old Toro 269H it had an indicator light on the console that would go on when gas was low. I just attempt to religiously top off gas after each mowing. Now if I could get my boys to do the same would be great when they mow for me. 5th issue, although minor, I cannot put on the front brush guard in the summer that came with the tractor now that I have the snow blower attachment/electric lift setup without fully removing the front lift kit any longer. Minor really I guess but now the brush guard just hangs in the garage during summer mowing as it does not seem to be worth the effort to pull all the brackets on and off each season. I was spoiled by my old Toro 269H it was a hydraulic lift for the snow blower and mower deck. This made the transition from mowing to snow blowing very easy. The number of brackets to take off and put on the Husqvarna for each season is going to take time to get down to where it is second nature. For the price I do believe the Husqvarna 354 XD is a good garden tractor for the first 2 years of use. The next 18 will tell if it is as good as my old Toro 269H.

I feel that this type of machine would be totally cool for plowing sidewalks, and as a backup mower... It's not as speedy as your ZT, but it will more up, down and around anything you point it at. The engine is great, assuming you can even find one. They were supposedly going to come out with a Yamaha V-Twin to replace the Kawasaki. I've not looked at the latest 2020 versions, but the Yamaha powered one may be out in the market.

Thanks for the compliments Neil! I'm at just over 80 hours now, and around 14 months owning it. It's mowing my 3.5 acre yard on the hillside I live on, it also pulls my 25 gallon boom sprayer and 200 lb broadcast spreader. I've pulled the 42" plug aerator last year, have not done it this year yet.... So far it's pulled the simple yard/lawn care implements that I require. Like many, I'm not trying to replicate a Kubota BX or similar Sub-Compact tractor while using a $3800 lawn care tractor 😉 , instead I'm using it as intended for lawn care. I've had zero issues, and truly don't expect to see any. I did call the dealer to ask if I can bring it in at 60 hours (before this season started) to pay him to drop the rear axle and flip it, drain it, refill with hydraulic fluid and reinstall it. I really wanted to toss him a couple hundred dollars to get the break in hydraulic fluid out and changed. He talked me into waiting until after this second year where I'll be about 120 to 140 hours, since he recommends it at 200 hours. I'm weird about early break in fluid changes.... I like to do a quick change on all fluids with new equipment.

Question; what degree slope do you estimate you have, and do you cut across the slope? No issues with flipping sideways? I was nervous about that way, and cut my slope up and down, with the down part going in reverse so that maximum traction is maintained. Scary going downhill backwards, but seems to be the safest method. Comments suggestions? Thx.

Most of those light-duty tractors have a k46 transaxle. It's non-serviceable (unless you want to remove it from the tractor to change the fluid-which can substantially increase the life of the unit) and it won't handle much in the way of hills, towing, or any ground-engaging implements. But they generally do just fine for mowing relatively flat ground. Many people report problems at less than 500 hours. But like I said, if you're willing to do some extra maintenance and change the fluid and avoid abuse, they'll probably last a lot longer.

Most all companies use similar blades, I don't expect you'll get lifetime of unit service from them. I do sharpen and balance my blades 2 times a season, and I'll replace blades every few years... just because. I bet you will get 10 years out of them if sharpened, balanced and not used to crush stone. I typically stick with gator high lift blades. They cut well and do a good job cutting smooth.

Use a quality synthetic oil, change it every 40 to 50 engine hours and it should last a long time. If you bought from an actual dealership, at near 200 hours take it in and have them pull the K66 and replace the fluid. My dealer charges $200 labor for this service, so likely around $250 with the synthetic drive oil. Even if you never do it again, I would strongly suggest you do it that one time.

It wasn’t purchased from a dealership, I’ll go ahead and tell you the story of how I got it for only $3,000. It was actually purchased new from a Lowe’s on a Memorial Day sale for $3,550+tax the Lowe’s receipt show $3,788.56 out the door. I however was not the one who bought it from Lowe’s... we will call the guy who bought it Joe. (Not his real name) Joe mows his lawn with it one time putting exactly 1.1 hours use on it. A few days later Joe sees a listing for a nice used John Deere X570 tractor for $4k with less than 200 hours on it and decides he has to have it. The JD dealership only offers Joe $2.5k in trade for his 1.1 hour Husky he impulse purchased from Lowe’s. Joe refuses to take the trade offer but still buys the X570. I am online searching for a good deal for the Kawi 354XD Husky (inspired by one of your videos) and see Joe’s listing for his new Husky 354D (technically used once) for a little over $3,000. It’s not the Kawi version I really wanted but I offer him $3k cash for it. Joe accepts and for an extra $50 delivers it to my house. So in summary Joe’s lose is my gain but I’m not really sure how the warranty is going to work in this situation. I have receipt from Lowe’s but it has Joe’s credit card number and name on it. I guess Ill just call Husky support and ask them.

Hi Larry. Thanks for the videos and your continuing to provide your comments. Very informative. What I don’t yet understand is how Husqvarna can offer a machine with this spec in the mid $3k range when all the competition are in the $6k+ range for similar spec transmission/engine etc. anyone know where these are made and are they made by Husqvarna or by someone else under license?
@LarryMusgrave
@LarryMusgrave 4 жыл бұрын
Alan, They are made by Husqvarna. Husqvarna lawn mowers are manufactured in the United States at Husqvarna Consumer Outdoor Products N.A., Inc. factories in Orangeburg, South Carolina and McRae, Georgia. Part of why the cost is lower is that they are not made with heavy frames that can accept the work load of front buckets, pulling a disc or other actual garden ground working tools. Where this machine shines is where you want to pull sprayers, spreaders, aerators, work on long, hard, steep slopes.... Things that almost every new machine in this price range will see transmission failure while doing. You need to know your needs. A John Deere or Simplicity set up with a K72, think and heavy frames and water cooled engine (for thousands of dollars more) will obviously smack this thing around and steal it's lunch right off the plate. But for mowing and doing lawn maintenance tasks like fertilizers, weed control, aerators and such.... This thing is very well equipped to give you a beautiful property.

Honestly, with the chains, it no longer matters what the tire tread is... And you'll never ever wear the tires out!

Commenting from 2022.... this unit is now $4500 - 5000, and I'm surprised to learn that Simplicity is a division of Briggs & Stratton, and their products feature, no surprise, Briggs engines.

Does your tractor ever feel like it's going to tip over mowing on that incline or is that why you added the wheel weights?
@LarryMusgrave
@LarryMusgrave Ай бұрын
The weights help greatly with lifting the uphill tire. The weights and chains combined help greatly with traction, it will climb embankment that is steep enough that the front end lifts if your body isn't positioned as forward as possible. I recommend both the weights and the chains if your living on a hillside, like I do.

@@LarryMusgrave Thanks for the suggestion. I have the same tractor, a 2023 TS354XD, which is over kill for our property. We have a small yard that is sloped on one side and my tractor feels a bit light when I mow on it's incline. Sometimes I even mow up and down rather than horizontally in that area just to be safe. 🙂

She's still doing great. Last year (2022) it ran double duty on my 3 acre yard and my 16 year son was hauling it in a utility trailer to mow grass for money. So while I run 2 garden tractors (splits the annual hours) we still have put 130 hours on this one. I believe that I'm going to take it to my selling dealer and have the rear axle dropped, cleaned, flipped over and fluid drained, refilled and reinstalled. That will far better set it up for success seeing that Husqvarna cheaped out and saved $50 by not getting the version with a spin on filter and drain plug. That's ignorant. My 2011 Craftsman Xcellerator GT with the Hydro Gear G730 has a drain plug and large spin on hydraulic filter. It takes standard off the shelf Cub Cadet axle service kits available at every Cub dealer in the country. I really wish that Husqvarna had opted for the serviceable version as they were specifying parts from suppliers. Like i mentioned, you have to remove and flip this one to drain it. Not exactly fun and easy. But my dealer charges $120 to do it..... I can do it, but for a buck twenty.... nope.

What is the difference between the TS354X and the TS354XD
@LarryMusgrave
@LarryMusgrave 4 жыл бұрын
If memory serves me, the XD had the Kawasaki prosumer/light commercial engine and the K66 transmission with locking differential. And the X was a Kohler consumer grade engine and the Hydro Gear G730 "fast cut" 8.5 mph transmission. I own both the K66 and the G730, the G730 is a brute! It may not be a locker, but toss chains and weights on the wheels and you'll climb a wall! The G730 has hydraulic drain and fill ports as well as a automotive style spin on hydraulic fluid filter. The Tuff Torque K66 does not have a filter, not does it have a drain port. You have to remove the entire rear axle/transmission, clean it well, remove the fill port plug, flip it upsidedown and allow it to drain, flip it back up and refill it and then reinstall the transmission. It isn't a massive job, but what a pain in the butt compared to a simple drain, filter swap and refill on that G730!

@@LarryMusgrave , I'm looking at this mower vs a JD 500 SERIES? Thoughts? Also, recommendations on these 2 transaxles?
@LarryMusgrave
@LarryMusgrave 4 жыл бұрын
@@timphilmon8573 you would have to look at the specific X5?? And see what it's got. I'll tell you this right now, the X500 and above will have a thicker frame and do more/longer heavy work such as snow plowing, pulling heavy. The Husqvarna frame is not intended as a frame to drag a disk or potato row planter.

We have the John Deere x739 and we can plow with it we can do almost anything with it but it comes with a price. I would consider it a subcompact with the transmission that is equipped it has the k92 and it is reallllly powerful never had a time it would not pull and we pull huge auger wagons with 80k lbs of grain in it I would recommend saving then getting a at least x710 for about 8 or 9k unless you want to pay 15k for a 739 and it is 4x4

Garden tractors are a dying machine.. I have garden tractor which is 1963 953 wheel horse.. It weight pretty close to the same as my 1025R deere. They were built for heavy ground engagement.. 1 or even 2 bottom plows. But this day and age, the garden tractor are pointless.. The deere X series is pointless.. And simplicity stopped making the legacy because no one wants a worthless gas garden tractor. Garden tiller can be run off pretty much any tractor, even if it has a k46 rearend. Doesn't take much effort moving a 42" garden tiller. So you are correct, yard tractors are todays big mowers. But the bigger mowers are all gonna be sub compact tractor size. Especially when they are almost same cost as a x700 series.
