Im from Sweden and learned to sew with my mom´s Husqvarna Zig-Zag (in Sweden theese machine isnt named Viking). 35 years old I found a Husqvarna Automatic for very little money, and I dont think it has been used much either. It is a wonderful machine and I have much more to learn about it! :)

Hi Carmen, If you're piecing leather, go with a LONGER stitch length, and use straight stitching. Certain soft leathers accept a zigzag, and you can get a stronger seam depending on the application. As far as needles, my preference is a Schmetz UNIVERSAL 90/14, which has great piercing power and strength for general leather sewing. Schmetz also makes a 110/16, and also a leather specific sewing needle, but I like the 90/14 best I'm glad you found my video informative. Warm regards, Scott

The maximum stitch width setting is 5, which generates about a 7mm wide stitch.
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair11 жыл бұрын
Hi Katrina, So sorry for missing your question! What a cool business, with so many poor quality collars out there. :) The best thread to use for this type of application would be Kevlar, which would give you excellent tensile strength, with minimum stretch. As a rule, do NOT want to use heavy thread on the TOP and bottom for feed and tension control reasons. Generally, the heavier thread will feed better through the bobbin, and a lighted thread will be used for the top stitch.

DECO stitching is a much more contemporary term, and typically applies to embroidered work. In particular, Bernina embraces this language, and is now labeling machines with this badge mark, such as the Bernette Deco 600.

Great machine and very good video. Have a problem with mine, with the needle not going down far enough for the bobbin case hook to catch on. I may have moved the part that decides where the needle is in height/depth of needle, when giving it a very much needed clean and oil when I bought it. Any hints or tips? I would be gratefull. Thanks!
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair10 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, Timing the machine may not be the distance the needle is traveling, but the position of the raceway in relation to the needle when it's in the down position. Do you recall loosening the set screw adjacent to the hook? If so, you can try SLOWLY lowering the needle with the bobbin removed to determine the timing position, and with the set screw slightly loose, make minor adjustments until the needle down corresponds with the joining hook regions where the thread is caught. Once positioned correctly, tighten the set screw, and with the bobbin inserted, BY HAND, gently turn the balance wheel the same direction as the motor drive to determine clearance, The needle has only milliseconds either way, and it is a very fine adjustment process. This may ultimately require a visit to your local machine technician, or should you pass through Wisconsin, let me know! Good sewing, Scott

Hello! =) I just got a sewing machine: Husqvarna automatic 21. And my question is: How do i get it to sew strait lines? It many sicksack lines, and mine its on B with a very tiny riny sicksack on right now, and i think its to hard and tight to sew on my projekt with dubbelchloth in wrinkels. I am trying to do a schabbychic inspired white chairpillow coat and in that its many wrinkels. ;)

I have had this sewing machine for several years and I love it. I recently just went to use the zipper foot to sew some piping and it completely throws off the tension so I'm getting loops on the top side. I have tried adjusting to no avail, any ideas on trouble-shooting this? Thanks! Its hard to find info on vintage machines! I have the original booklet as well.
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair9 жыл бұрын
+Chels m - I'm glad my videos on vintage machines have proved informative. If you haven't yet, please consider checking out my Swedish Machine Playlist on the home page of my channel. As far as your tension challenges, I'm not sure if you've been trying to adjust upper and lower tension together, or only one, but you clearly have an issue of inadequate bobbin tension - could also mean your upper tension is set too high. Try lowering your upper tension in VERY SMALL increments, while modestly increasing your bobbin tension, by turning the screw IN on the carrier. After each change do a sew off on the desired material, and make modest adjustments, as needed. Remember, if you have looping on the TOP, your bobbin tension is inadequate. If the looping is on the bottom, your UPPER tension is inadequate. Please let me know if you need anything else, Scott

I'm so excited to see this video! A Swedish friend gave this to me, it was his deceased mother's - I know nothing about sewing machines and am about to sit back, watch and listen. I've decided to learn how to sew, and I got it out of the box and it's sitting on the table waiting to be used. It's in perfect condition as far as I can tell, all tools included, and my ex-partner used to use it for sewing heavy materials. He tried to steal it, actually, but that's another story. Is the instruction manual you have in English? The one I have is only in (I assume) Swedish. Oh, I'm so excited! Right, watching now.

@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair10 жыл бұрын
Hi Tapio, The bulb you want is 25W, but make sure it's rated approximately 10MA (milla-amps) and 110 Volts. I believe the bulb nomenclature is G3, which gives the bulb an output of about 1/100th of an amp.

Hi, I bought a 21E and the reverse and the stitch length is not working. Can you help me. The machine is in perfect condition. It came with everything. Can you run the machine with out the cam.
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, Assuming nothing is broken, try opening the back hatch where the cam goes, apply high heat from a hair dryer at a distance of about 6-8 inches from the back side of the stitch length and reverse. While applying the heat, try moving the knob and depressing the reverse. Lubrication inside would also be helpful once the area cools off. You can perform a STRAIGHT STITCH without a cam, but avoid operating the ZIGZAG, because the cam limits the horizontal swing, and without the cam, the needle can hit the throat plate and potentially damage your machine. I do have a CAM available for sale, if you have an interest.....not cheap. Happy New Year, and good sewing, Scott

Is the husqvarna automatic the same as the husqvarna viking 21-a?
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair10 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis..... The "Automatic" is a feature of a select number of Husqvarna Green Machines, to include the 21a. By automatic, they are referring to the function of disengaging the clutch for bobbin winding by simply snapping a bobbin on the machine.I illustrate this in the video, and it's a huge advantage and time saver! Please let me know if you have additional questions, and enjoy your Swedish Beauty!!
@iknownothing-m8c10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer! I don't think Husqvarna branded their machines with "viking" in Sweden. I've found a green Husqvarna Automatic 21A, a ZigZag, a grey Husqvarna Zig-zag. I'm going to learn how to dart and take in the sides of a shirt. But more important, I need a machine that can handle taking in the sides of a pair or jeans. It's hard for a total novice to know which of these old (or new) machines can handle denim. Especially withe the name confusion. :}
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair10 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis, Any of the Husqvarna Viking Green machines (if properly serviced) can handle multiple layers of denim. You can obviously choose a denim specific needle, and if you intend to use a heavier thread, put that thread in the bobbin rather than feed it through the upper tension. Good sewing, and thanks for sharing!

Hi, i need help again what kind of Oil can I use for my sew machine please thanks...
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair9 жыл бұрын
Hi Yuleima, Standard machine oil for most friction points is fine on your Swedish Beauty. With heavier use, I also recommend a few drops of kerosene at the top lubrication points which also serves to clean those high friction points to increase the effectiveness of the oil, and reduce wear on your machine. You can also use kerosene to lightly wipe painted services that develop oil residue as well to spruce up your machine appearance, and protect the luster of the machine. Gently apply with a cosmetic pad, and stroke the surface in a single direction, changing the pads frequently. Good sewing, and thanks for your questions...always glad to help! Scott.
