The switch in this video is sticky, however you can do the same if you have ISM related codes or the car does not start due an ISM fault.

Great video. I would recommend that before closing it all up connect the switch and the cables and try the key first so you don't have to open it all up again. Haven't read all the comments. Someone probably already mentioned that

Thanks for the video! My personal experience with a non-starting SAAB (and solution) described below. Please read all before starting any steps, as I did encounter problems. But seems like this is the right thing to do for 'steering wheel lock' and other issues. I had been having problems with my SAAB 9-3 Aero (2009). I was getting the steering wheel lock malfunction, then the door lock/unlock functions started to screw up and not work using my key fobs, then it seemed like even though I had removed the key the car still thought the key was in (open door caused warning chime, possibly also causing a slow battery drain?). Eventually the key would not turn past lock. Unplugging the battery, waiting 5-15 minutes and then trying again did not seem to change much, but I could often get my car to start by removing and reinserting the key quickly and vigorously until something happened. Batteries in the fobs were fine. I read a comment suggesting that an old dirty Ignition Switch Module (ISM) could be causing it and saw the related videos on KZbin. - I unplugged both terminals on the battery (some have suggested not doing that) - Removed the ISM - Cleaned (mostly with isopropyl alcohol) and re-tensioned the switch prongs to ensure good connections - Put it back together and plugged in the battery Still a problem: Without the key being in the car, the daytime running lights came on. No more steering wheel lock warning, but I could not turn the key past lock. Somehow the car thought the key was still there when it wasn’t (??). I unplugged the battery again (maybe just the negative?) to avoid a drained battery. My solution was to: - Remove the ISM again, - Manually pull back the pin on the bottom of the ISM that normally prevents the key from turning so the key can be inserted and turned to the ON position. - Put they key into the ISM while it has not yet been installed in the car, turning it to ON position. - Plug in the car battery again - Plug the ISM together with key in ON position back into the car Fixed. Once I did that the car would start. No more steering wheel lock warning. Steering lock click sound on key in and out, and key could be removed properly, the key fob lock/unlock worked again. It’s only been a few days but so far so good. Hope this can help someone out there. I certainly appreciate the videos trying to deal with SAAB issues. Cheers, Joel

How did you get the car to crank with the locking spring bypassed, or did you unblock it after you put the key back in? Let me know ASAP. Thanks!

@@sigmamale7241 Hi. I moved the locking spring to get the key into the ON position while the the ISM module was not yet installed. I think the locking pin doesn't spring back and lock when the key is in at the ON position. It seems that starting with the key in the ON position worked to get me past the locking pin and crank it (if I recall correctly). At the time my car thought that it was on (sort of?) even before the crank. But I believe it was the re-tensioning of the ISM prongs that did most of the important work.

June 5, 2019First of all, thank you very much for this excellent instructional video. Mine is a 2008 model 9-3 convertible 2.0T, and was experiencing key lock issues. I followed your video step by step and was able to get it done without major hiccups, and saving a ton of money I'm sure. The only suggestions I would add are: 1) A must - Disconnect the car battery terminals as STEP#1. I've read that if you don't, it can cause key issues later, a major headache to resolve.2) Detaching the plug attached to the cable to the ISM socket was slightly tricky; you have to rotate the plug lever tab 90 degrees before you can release the plug. (this was out of view in your video)3) I did not have to remove the two torx screws inside the compartment under the armrest.4) I did not have to remove the passenger side console wall panel since the ISM is removed from the driver's side.5) It's tricky removing the covers off the ISM; it helps to have the right tools and exercise a lot of patience, especially trying to wiggle the ISM out of its place. It turns out the gold finger contact plates on the ISM PCB were worn down. I used Q-Tips and solvent to clean the gold fingers as well as the contact prongs. Somewhat dirty. I suppose I could find a PCB lab somewhere to have them re-plate the contacts, but it might be cheaper to just buy a new ISM.If you decide to buy a new ISM, here is a link to the lowest cost ISM I could find, that was an OEM part. I would not trust them used units off ebay.www.saabpartscounter.com/oem-parts/saab-ignition-switch-rebuild-kit-32021815?c=Zz1ib2R5JnM9Y2VudGVyLWNvbnNvbGUmbD01NSZuPUFzc2VtYmxpZXMgUGFnZSZhPXNhYWImbz05LTMmeT0yMDA4JnQ9Mi0wdCZlPTItMGwtbDQtZ2Fz

When you're getting steering lock malfunction message, and disconnecting battery for 30 secs fixes it, is it more likely to be the CIM or the ISM failing?
@luuhax
@luuhax Жыл бұрын
Don't know if you're still active here or if you remember, but I have a question. I opened it up and it's clear as day this is my issue. The contacts were very worn. I scuffed them up gently to restore some yellowish sheen to the plates and then used some electronics cleaner spray to rub them down. There was a lot of dirt that came off and the previous silvery color was gone. Not perfect but a lot better looking. However it seems that the lock is now permanently in "unlocked" mode. I can start the car no problem, but the steering lock never engages. Not when I remove it and then ofc it doesnt unlock when i put it in again. I was wondering if you're any better with electronics than me and might know what's going on. I assume the "unlock circuit" is in a constantly closed for some reason.

Hi Flying Monkey! (BTW, I"d rather by flying too). I removed the switch, cleaned the contacts just as you did in the video.. All seemed to go well. I reinstalled, inserted key, got "Key not recognized" error.. Then got "Steering wheel lock malfunction" error. Key will not rotate in ISM and steering wheel malfunction message will not clear. Neither key will activate door locks.
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, this procedure will not resolve the key not accepted msg, if you receive this msg, your ISM has an internal fault and cleaning will not help, however the procedure will not make it worse unless you touched by hand or metal while you are charged with static electricity any part of the board or used improper cleaning agents. Your ISM need to be replaced, when replacing it you might want to disconnect the battery as well. Good luck

Thank you for all of your Saab videos, They have helped me tremendously! I am having a weird issue with my ignition switch and had a question. Can a bad ignition switch cause the ECU to fail?? My ECU recently went bad with codes p0606 P1606 p0605 and a couple others. The car still started and ran but with a very rough idle and very little power. After getting a used ECU cloned to my car, the car ran with the exact same conditions but no check engine light or codes. I took it to my mechanic for diagnosis and he discovered that while it is running, if you switch the key from the run position back to the on position, and quickly back to run position the car would immediately idle better and regain all of its power. He said he checked relays and they were good and he suggested I install a new Ignition switch. I then felt like the ECU replacement was a waste so I put the old ecu back in and I could not remedy the condition by switching the key position, so i know there is a problem with the old ECU. The situation seems a bit odd to me. I could only find a ignition switch rebuild kit online and it is on its way to me but I am not sure if there is anything else I should consider checking.....Any input would be greatly appreciated!

@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY My mechanic said the same thing. He cant understand why the ignition switch would cause rough idle and low power but it is the only thing we manipulate to make it run properly. I had mailed the ecu to a shop in Illinois called Your parts source. From what I gathered from them they use computers to clone the ecu. I didn't understand how they could clone my damaged Ecu. The other odd thing was that the new ecu had a different part number but it seems to be fine and i was assured it is compatible. I am just scared there is another underlying issue and i really dont want to lose another ecu. If the new ignition switch fixes it I will have to assume it is all good. Firstly thank you for the video, I have followed it and fitted and replacement ISM in my Aero, it was easy to follow and very informative. The reason I needed to replace the ISM was somtimes on the old one when I removed the key the car would chime and I wouldn't be able to lock it or arm the alarm. I would have to reinsert the key until upon removal I would heard a clunk and the ISM would "pop up" , this would then enable me to remove the key (no chime) and lock the car /arm the alarm. Now I need your help if you would be so kind. I have a question, the new ISM works perfectly except I do not hear the clunk or "pop up" from the ISM, however the car still locks, unlocks and i can arm the alarm (red light flashes) can you please explain why fitting a new ISM has removed the clunk and "pop up" that I experienced on the old one. Many thanks in advance.

@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I assume the clunk u r used to hear is the steering lock , and that doesn’t always click when working correctly indeed, it depend on factors. Now let me ask u, did u disconnect the battery during the procedure ? And do u have access to a tech2 to read any faults stored in the car ? Finally although it could be a faulty new ISM but chances are slim. U can always disconnect the battery for half an hour and try again, the first time u insert the ignition key after battery disconnection u inly insert the key then remove it and do not turn it. Cheers

@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Thank you so much for your reply it so valuable very to have someone with such knowledge who is prepared to help others. The new ISM was not new but in fact a used one from ebay and although the seller assured me it was 100% working it could indeed be faulty however all functionality is present or at least so it seems. The clunk could well have been the steering lock but I always felt it came from the dash around the red light area I always thought it was alarm or immobiliser related as without the clunk on removal of key I couldn't even lock the car with the fob. Regarding the battery I did disconnect the battery negative first HOWEVER I forgot to do this until after I had disconnected the main connection block underneath the ISM , the big block, not the small one directly on the ISM. I do not have a tech 2 but I do intend on buying one from ebay in the near future due to a right and left dipped beam failure messages I get when starting car despite both dipped beams and headlights working fully. I will disconnect the battery and see if that will reset it in anyway. I will follow your instructions about the key. I wonder if the ISM came from a newer saab and therefore functions slightly differently when put on a 2003/4 aero Ss? My concern is the the electronic "pop up" was so important on the previous ISM for functionality, the car thought the key was still in it unless the "pop up" occurred. Strangely enough I miss it, it was quite a nice sound almost like and electronic lock releasing. Can I ask does your make this noise when removing your key. Thank you once again for your help. Mike

Ue Mackay, yes it does that sound but it is randomly, it is not every-time .. so it has conditions to occur, but dont worry about it if it doesnt thats absolutely normal unless there are other symptoms, it is for sure the steering lock and nthn else. Hi, I had this problem with the ignition, soon I pop the key , key not recognised contact service, so I buy a used one from eBay , I done the same job like you done , but still nothing , what it can be the problem ?
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY

Its hard to tell without reading fault codes from the car.. Try to disconnect the battery negative cable for few minutes, this might solve ur issue temporarily. There was few models with bad software, but other than these u might have a bad CIM ..

The Flying MechanicDIY so even if i had buy another ISM and replace it,the real problem it can be the CIM ,as I don’t need to programming the key or stuff like that and still got the same problem like at the begging ?

Victor Bebe u cant tell without reading faults and u might even need tech2 solely to be able to diagnose the car. The ISM is cheap enough as used to try though. By the way, the basics, did u try different key

I get key not accepted on my Saab and it doesn’t let my move the key from the lock position. Any thoughts on that?
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY
@TheFlyingMechanicDIY 5 жыл бұрын
The most common reason for that is usually an old, or low charged car battery. Check u r car battery voltage with the headlight ON, if it read less than 11.5, replace the battery, or try to jump start the car, but give it some time to charge. 2nd, try a different key, i hope u have one, its really not a good idea to own a car with a single key. Beyond that, ur CIM could be failing. U might be tempted to disconnect the battery to try solving the issue, if u do so, u will erase the stored fault codes in the car and it maybe become impossible for a technician to point out which component has failed. If u have access to the factory scan tool Tech2, i can guide u further, or actually watch my other video about STEERING LOCK MALFUNCTION
