In this HVAC Training Video, I show Furnace and Air Handler Blower Fan Motor Operation, Speeds, Wire Colors, Electrical Resistance Values on the Windings, How to Rest for Shorts, and How These PSC Blower Motors are Affected by Airflow Restrictions. PSC means Permanent Split Capacitor Motor. This Means that the Motor Requires a Capacitor to both Start and to Run. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

Out of all the channels teaching heating and air conditioning, you have the very very best examples, explanation’s and detailed instructions. Your verbal tempo and rhythm are excellent. Some talk way too fast and mumble a bit leading to many many play backs. Not with you. Thanks for your time and effort’s

I purchased the AC service book and it is great. Detailed explanations and great illustrations. I've been doing HVAC since I was 15 with my dad (I'm 45 now and am the owner/operator of my dad's business) and I've picked up a lot of great information from this guy.

The most common issue service techs have when testing blower motor amperage in the field is leaving the blower door off. This will give an amperage that is out of spec and confuse a tech. And sadly, its used as a means to show a customer their motor is bad and sell them a new one. Better to plan on using a wire outside of blower compartment, even the plug wire can work by deducting inducer voltage from total if the heat is on.....Awesome video.

Thank you Professor Mig. Seeing the higher ohm reading I would have thought it must be a higher speed. Key information. Need to go back and study my Ugly right? And now it makes more sense. Less resistance means more voltage delivered to the fan. TY Just bought the paperback version of your Refrigerant Carving and Service. It is my new Bible

The great thing about videos like this is the way they challenge preconceived notions. From your video I spring boarded into better understanding of how PSC motors allow variable speed. A standard formula to determine synchronous speed of a squirrel cage induction motor is to multiply 120 by 60, then divide by the number of poles in the motor. Most, including most shaded pole motors, have two poles. Am I correct to assume that the speed control of those extra windings is because the extra windings effectively create more poles in the stator, resulting in a slower synchronous speed? Is the slip % of slow speed significantly more for slow speed operation in PSC motors?

I have a 1/2 HP,GE motor from my Rheem furnace (this is a spare motor) Its got 2 brown wires for the cap, a white wire which is the common and then black (which should make the motor spin the fastest) and it also has a blue, yellow and red wire. (red should make it turn the slowest) Depending on which of the colored wires I pair with the white, I should get a different speed (RPM) out of the direct drive motor. I hope to use this HVAC motor for another task but need to understand the RPM So I set up my stop watch on my Iphone, I put a piece of tape on the shaft and set up my camera to record video which Im able to slow down to very low speeds so I could count the turns of the shaft. It did not matter which wire I paired with the white wire, all of them made the motor spin the same speed (1200 RPM) which is faster than the rated speed on the motor label which is 1050 RPM. After talking with a friend, he thinks it might be because Im free wheeling the motor with no load on it, (no impeller and no duct work) Im stumped. Im not an electrical guy. All my engineering work is on the mechanical side of things.

Great tutorial, thanks! So now that we identified our speeds, how do we find out the RPM of each speed with out a rotation meter. The reason I ask is my motor at home on my condenser was an 860 RPM motor. I only had a 1075 two speed motor on the truck to replace it with. So naturally i put it in so my wife could have some air conditioning. I wired it to the low speed, but it still seems to be a bit too fast. I searched some for the answer to this, without much luck, any help would be great, thanks again.

Craig, is there a way to tell if the blower motor is getting weak, like not blowing as hard as you think it should? Also if you want the fan to always blow on high speed for everything, can you put a dual connector or y adapter on the black wire to both the heat and cool terminals?

Hello. Thanks for your videos. A question...if im checking resistence between any of the wires of the blower to ground, and i get a value differento to OL. What should do? Replace motor? Or what step?

Can you explain what was happening in the motor when air flow was blocked? Why got higher speed yet current went down? It was already at its highest set speed. Will motor be dead sooner when air flow is consistently blocked? Thank you

@chriseh09
@chriseh09 2 жыл бұрын
Were you adding a restriction or adding static pressure? A duct system will,add static pressure without adding a “restriction” but a PSC running without static pressure will over amp, get hot and shut down.....am I correct?

1: 120v PS motor is easier to be burned out since it has higher current? 2: You showed the motor current is much lower when its air flow was blocked, which is good for motor since its current is much lower? In reality when insulation pad fell off and blocked the air flow it normally caused the motor to be burned out. Can you explain that? Thank you

For instance in terms ohms law and watts law, you are reading 4 ohms and 10 amps with black wire that means there is 40 volts present and according to watts law that means there is 400 watts also! Can you reply about that?

If the outlet was blocked off you would read a higher amps. Because the motor is struggling to move that air forward. It reads lower when restricting the intake side because their is no air to move
@lnk4328
@lnk4328 2 жыл бұрын
MG, wrong. Blocking either the inlet or outlet results in the fan moving less air which means the motor is doing less work which equals lower current.
