The company I worked for put a 90% single vent furnace in the basement of a beauty shop. Had to go clean or change the sensor every month, ignitors too. Too many chemicals floating around and kept gumming up the sensor and ignitor. Lost the customer. Boss wouldn't fix it. Places like that try to get the most sealed system you can find. Run both vents.

You did a great job and please dont think im trying to knock you in any way, but dont use a wire brush on a flame sensor. Agreed. If you have had work done on the unit before, though, it's always worth it to keep the paperwork handy. I keep such records in a gallon bag or office plastic sleeve taped to the side of the unit, typically. A bill that shows the parts replaced and the notes from the repair person can be very useful to the next person who comes along. Some things that were done may not be documented, though. But at least it gives the next repair person a decent starting point. Keeping the papers in order, separated by job date, also can help, if you have an older model that has had more than a couple repair calls on it.

Came across SCAM and I always watch those LOL which is how I ended here. Great video and honesty! I am Corvette's you tuber and DIY'r and I guarantee you I do a better job than many proclaimed "professionals". I find myself fixing their mistakes often during a 17 year old 3 story town home remodel I am under way for my home. Pulling out wires from gang boxes that have 9 (yes 9) commons and grounds pigtailed. One with 7 hots. Original construction. When I do have to call someone I take before and after pictures. I have replaced HVAC motherboards, and motors. Last year 1 unit died and I opted to replace the entire HVAC system (were 15 years old) 2 heat 2 AC units. 3 months in a motor dies. Pulled out installation package and realized installers made some mistakes. No charge to replace but this is why due diligence is critical for any home owner. Educate yourself, read manuals, know what the pros are talking about. Won't even get into the "shorted AC condenser" scams I see around where I am at. Test and replace my own as well as neighbors. Ok taking a breath.

I’ve had one experience with that part . I have been an HVAC tech for the past five years and only one incident where I had a furnace (Goodman) to install a 20 amp resistor for some reason that particular unit was too high. I tried taking it out and even with a new flame sensor it would be Out of range cutting the unit off within minutes, but I’ve only had to use that one piece one time and even my superior said that is a rare occasion to this day that unit we have a maintenance plan on and runs fine. Good job . Keep up the good work and nice video.

Electronics tech here. The resistor was labelled '20M OHMS'. That 'M' means Mega, in electronics, as in million and that resistor should read 20 MILLION OHMS if it really is what it appears to be and is correctly marked. It's also possible it's mislabelled or whoever made it doesn't actually know about electronics and just made the label up to look plausible in which case the actual 'resistor' value could be just about anything, including not actually a resistor at all. However, it depends on the exact nature of the detection electronics as to the effect of a particular external resistance and it's effect and what value would be required to achieve a particular desired result. You may have been able to measure it with your meter to see what it actually was. There is a chance that if this value showed up when testing wiring continuity reasonable to suspect something similar in the sense of an obscure 'repair' may have been applied to make things appear to be something they are not. In this application, it appears it was there to make a decent flame sensor read on the threshold of 'no flame' from the view of the control board. This would appear to make a unit need regular 'cleaning' (which may actually be nothing more than a discrete change of resistor value) to the unnecessary expense of repeated flame sensor 'replacements', (again, in reality just a change of resistor rather than an actual new flame sensor) in a short space of time. If this is what is happening then it makes a lucrative scam as the customer is charged for labor and parts when in reality only a few cents resistor is actually changed in a couple of seconds, creating the illusion of some actual repair work having been done.
@GhostscastNoshadows
@GhostscastNoshadows 26 күн бұрын
I read an article last night this a resistor in line with the sensor could be there to fine tune the signal to the board . I was thinking it may have come with the new board? Maybe a goodman patch/band aid? Anyway I could not find a replacement anywhere I looked online. Should probably call goodman...and they very well may say leave it off.
@DelticEngine
@DelticEngine 26 күн бұрын
@@GhostscastNoshadows I agree with you in that there's a chance the presence of it could actually be correct and necessary because of the possibility of faulty combustion not causing the flame detection circuit to safely shut the system down like it should. It's quite possible there's a problem somewhere else causing the board to not quite detect the presence of a proper flame. It's better to have things safely shut down than make something less safe, which is what removing the resistor would do. If the board is a genuine Goodman part then it may be an idea to contact them and ask them about the resistor. With it being specifically labelled up like that it does look like a legit component. If it was a scam I think it would have been much less obvious and the absolute cheapest method used, rather than go to all the time and effort of putting this together when most likely it's only going to be a HVAC tech that ever sees it. Unless they were going for a 'hidden in plain sight' approach. Funny thing is, the more I think about it the more I think it's likely to be legitimate. It's certainly unusual, though. I certainly think it needs investigating further, particularly as it involves safety aspects.

@@GhostscastNoshadows York does that on some of their airhandles for the fan speed. You can cut the resistor out and it will still work. But the ECM won't change speeds. It'll just run high speed no matter what mode the equipment is running it.

@stevengabalis4986
@stevengabalis4986 16 күн бұрын
Not an expert on this, but larger units have more burners, usually 20k BTU per burner. My top floor furnace is 40K with 2 burners, lower level is 60K with 3 burners. It's likely that with 4 burners your Rheem is 80K BTUs, and if you replace it with an 80K of any brand it will have 4 burners. Your HVAC installer can calculate the correct size for your house, if you're replacing a lower efficiency unit with a better one, you may not need as large a furnace. Four burners is not necessarily better than three, and the correct size is more comfortable and efficient, even though it may be smaller.

The things people come up with... The number of burners makes no difference, it's the capacity of the unit. If they can get 80k out of 2 burners at 90%, what's the difference, except doubling the opportunity for the heat exchanger cracking and requiring more materials to manufacturer the unit?

The flame resister u pulled out looks like it might possibly be for commercial/industrial applications... Like if your using a uv light flame sensor with a universal control for example. Flame sensor signals on residential heating equipment are all the same. Fun fact, I carry a carrier/Bryant straight flame sensor on my van at all times because it has enough length to be cut or bent to temporarily replace a bad flame sensor on any furnace to get the heat up and running if you don't have the correct one. Then the customer has heat while waiting for the part.. as long as it has never been heated before.. if it was heated then it can't be bent anymore. U might have to drill the hole the sensor goes thru a tad bit bigger so the porcelain fits but that will have no negative affect on things once you get and install the OEM sensor

I'm a tech and work on a lot of different brands. I'm about 9 years in on repairing hvac units. I see more problems with Carrier, Trane, and other "top end" brands than anything. Yes, I know the same manufacturers make the "lower end" models too. But the problems with Goodman are the same as any other brands from what I see. Wrong sized for the house or apartment, faulty install, other problems that aren't because of the brand. If you have a good install, proper duct sizing, and change the filter regularly Goodman is just fine! In my experience anyway. I'd install one in my home with no hesitation.

I was gonna say, I've never seen a flame sensor go "bad" unless the connector separates from the rod itself. You can check continuity on a flame rod too, from the rod to the spade connector should read 0 ohms. First time I've ever seen a flame "resistor".

I remember a control board i replaced one time had a flame sensor resistor included with it. I remember a list of certain boards that required the resistor. Sometimes old equipment had weird ways of flame sense. That equipment didn't look old enough to have the weird flame sensor setup. An example of a unit with weird flame sense is a rheem furnace from the 90's that used the common from the ignitor jumped to the flame sensor. When replacing that control board you must run a new wire for the flame sensor because it is not shared anymore. These are few and far between but just last week i had to help another tech with that exact problem. I carry that OEM rheem flame sensor kit on my truck for these weird situations.

That's a legitimate part but that is not the intended use, sounds like an idiot was out there. Fantastic job man. I have ran 3 service businesses and the last one I had when I started I had a whole slew of competitors but every time major Contracting companies would send me out the commercial sites to work on them I found dumb errors which I probably corrected and reported when I finally exited the business I had no competition. Looks like at the rate you're going you'll probably be the same way in a few years keep up the good work!

I've been in the trade for 40 years. I hate when scammers give of all a bad name. I'd like to think his meter only read milliamps and he put a resistor in to read micro and forgot to take it off. Not even sure if that works though. I've forgotten much of the electronics stuff I used to know. I remember in the old days wrapping thermostat wire 10 turns around a pencil to set heat anticipators with old analog meters. Not sure if a resistor would work the same way on a flame sensor for the DC amperage opposed to the AC on the heat anticipator.

I have rebuilt both my furnace and AC unit myself. The furnace is 34 years old and in fantastic shape! MAINTENANCE!!!!!! The AC was added later, but is going on 20. Clean, check and replace the run capacitors as needed, OIL the motors every few years, just good and regular maintenance. Stuff can last a LONG time. It's a shame that finding an honest contractor of ANY kind has become a challenge instead of the norm. But..... that's also why I became very adept at doing things myself and being very picky about doing it RIGHT. NO BODGES!!!! I order the correct parts and keep everything factory. It's a pleasure to watch an actual pro work, not a scammer.

In my opinion its better to break the red going to the thermostat rather than the Y going to the outdoor unit. You can put compressor time delays on the thermostat preventing short cycles on the compressor and also will let the customer know theres a problem as the thermostat will be blank.

Great job checking the sensor. You need to check the diagram and see if is supposed to be on there. May have come with the board but I have not found anything. If you get a chance call goodman. I see they have the door to the mechanical room blocked with insulation. This worries me . I am pretty sure the water heater may down vent if it runs at the same time as the furnace blower. Had this happen in a building full of condos and every unit did it. Check the water heater.

A resistor can be use to adjust the amps between the board and flame sensor. It rare to see. but it could be possible If one is using aftermarket parts. I have see a few systems using them. I've done HVACR for 20yrs. but even still only seen a few of them. Granted I most of those systems I ended up removing them. So the system would work correctly. but they all did have new control boards. But I have Seen some on systems still working When I've done PMs. So I really never thought about it being a scam. I just learned If there is one installed and my amps were to low. to just remove it.

What if he's not the one called back? Almost any service tech is going to start at the board in the furnace or airhandler. At the very least they're required to check all parts of a system for liability reasons to cover their own/ companies. But also you don't jump any safety and leave it unhooked in a running condition. It doesn't matter how small of a safety switch it is.

Not trying to troll, but when you went to the outside unit and opened up it's panel, I asked myself: "why didn't he pull the shut-off switch before opening that?" as like a general safety precaution. You know, like in case of loose/frayed/faulty wires inside - I always do that myself even though it's almost never really necessary - I just REALLY hate when I get shocked because of someone else's negligence and that's happened to me enough to where I just go ahead and disconnect power before opening any panels so I can inspect the wiring first before giving it juice again. Then it turns out that it wasn't even plugged in to begin with and I proceeded to have a giant facepalm moment. 🤣

I always replace the flame sensor after I get it running from a cleaning. Generally it takes years for the flame rod to get build up on it, and cleaning the rod introduces scratches in the metal called nucleation sites that lead to faster build-up. If you clean it only, you will be back or the homeowner will have to clean it every time the furnace fails, pretty much annually. If you replace it, you won't be back for a flame failure for much longer, usually about 10 years or more. Which do you think saves the homeowner more money? Cleaning annually will cost a minimum of $75 per year. Over 10 years it adds up to $750 or the inconvenience of cleaning it themselves when they don't have heat. Replacing it should be around $200 over 10 years. I'm doing more good for the homeowner by replacing, but those of you who clean them are just ensuring you have future work for yourselves. The scam is cleaning them!

I could be wrong but I suspect that resistor is for bypassing the flame sensor. One side goes to ground, the other to the flame sensor wire. A flame sensor is about a megohm at room temp and much higher when hot. Someone probably bypassed the flame sensor at some point.
