as a european tech i REALLY dont like the "financial restraint" used with that 2 pole contactor instead of a normal 3 pole. for my sanity i am completly ignoring the open hot terminals. just shoving your hand in that electrical box by accident would probably kill you on the spot.

I had an old boss who did this on a new A/C install we were doing one time. He forgot to pull the disconnect for the condenser. Next thing that happens, he started pulling the high voltage wires off the contactor and shocked himself. Left a pretty nasty burn scar on his finger.

The contact points on that motor contactor / relay are made with nickel plated copper. Sanding bad contact points only exposes more of the soft copper. This will lead to a greater chance of the contact points welding together in the closed position. Don't do it! Just replace them!
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 6 ай бұрын
exactly, the good contact material is only a thin layer of plating, once it pits and burns, it's game over for that contactor. never file or sand them, because the materials below can and will arc together and keep the compressor(device) running.

Chris, funny thing is you post a video and I'm having to replace a failed contactor and capacitor on my carrier air conditioner aka condenser unit. Thankfully I keep parts on the shelf at home. And as you know I'm in I.t. not HVAC but I know enough to do basic repairs. Even put a new condenser fan motor and blade in. motor bearings sounded a bit rough. gotta keep the house cool here in Florida. even put a soft start on it. That way if I get knocked onto generator power it'll help with starting while running on emergency power. I've got a 20kw stand by generator and id rather not slug it too much with the inrush of both the main house system and my mini split for my home office in my garage.

Curious, couldn't you have adjusted the blower pulley in (while monitoring motor amperage) to increase your air volume? Is there a reason you didn't do this and/or mention it? Really enjoy ALL your videos and I'm asking because maybe there is a reason I'm not aware of as to why you didn't. I would do this quite often in the past when I had airflow issues, but I'm always open to why others maybe do something different than I do.

First, if possible, I would have replaced with a 3-pole contactor to prevent single phasing should a contact weld together. The compressor, as you know, has internal protection. Cost could not be that much more. Next, did you clean the return air grid if that is what it was. lastly, I hope you were back-flushing top to bottom. Good video.

It may need to be addressed. Not to pick on ya but those edges of the fan housing are sharp could cut the roof membrane. Some restaurants pick a few nights out of a .24 of the yr to clean, and do updates, but have a High stipulation that work has to be done at a certain time, night or real early in am. As small as the possibility is I'm just a wee bit worried that you could have a dust explosion. . Just curious...Have you ever run into that? We had one on an outdoor broadcast telecom communication installation during wind gusts of 60 mph when filters failed on a hi-flo cooling system there to remove residual heat produced by the racks of packed in modula aux components. The whole place looked like a missile hit it due to the electrostatic explosion. Holey Moley...it was almost, not as bad tho, as a tower losing a guy wire. A runaway Tube rf section is not anything you want to be anywhere close to when the rf is making the hair on your arms and head sticking up in all directions. We had to call in the electric company to shut down all the burnt arcing carbon tracked feeds..The grounding spikes even reached melt down temps and we could hear sizzling coming from the mini-sub station power 3 phase closed delta. With the newer transmitters the voltages are much safer to work on. and a failure won't be prone to blow to pieces. Like your videos. You have taught a lot about what's involved with industrial A.C. Service. Guy's that take pride in their work are a pleasure to watch doing the job. And, from what I've seen, You're one of those guys' Good Job as always. 🙂

I am still so confused how contactors are used over there. Over here in Europe we classify devices, casings, hoursings etc for the environment they should work in. Even for me working with less critical things it is important to use the correct things. We have IPXX on all of the things where the last X is for water and the first X is for dust etc. The first x, a 4 would make sure that anything larger than 1 mm can't get in. A 6 would be completely sealed from dust etc. That would keep the sand away. Shouldn't be hard to install the contactors with IP64.

If you just sand these contacts, it could work as emergency fix for a couple of days, but not more. If the coating on these contacts has been destroyed that badly, sanding it will not work for long time and you risk a sticking contactor (because the contacts can weld themselves to each other if you have a bad connection between them), causing further damage which can be very expensive to repair (like a single-phased burned compressor). It's not worth it.
