I am nobody's friend. My name is gossip. I have no respect for justice. I maim without killing. I break hearts and ruin lives. I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age. The more I am quoted, the more I am believed. I flourish at every level of society. My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and no face. To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become. I am nobody's friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same. I topple governments and wreck relationships.I ruin careers and cause sleepless nights, heartache, and indigestion. I spawn suspicion and generate grief. I make innocent people cry on their pillows. Even my name hisses. I am called gossip, party gossip, Telephone gossip, and don't forget CHURCH gossip. I make headlines and headaches. Before you repeat a story, ask yourself, is it true? Is it fair ? Is it necessary ? Half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can't, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it..Dynamite is stored, and moved with great caution, because of the knowledge we have of the power that it possesses to destroy. Likewise, Christians, we have a tongue as powerful as dynamite; yet, very often it is handled as if there is no danger at all. We should, rather, hang a sign on our tongue that reads ---"DANGER, HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE AND DAMAGING." David said in Psalm 39:1, "I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my tongue with a bridle." Scripture clearly condemns, warns, and is full of examples of the dangers of an unbridled tongue. Many times we fail to learn all the facts about a situation or about a person and we jump to conclusions, speak to others about our conclusions, without the realization that this is considered in the sight of God as Gossip. To murder character is as truly a crime as to murder the body, the tongue of the slanderer is brother to the dagger of the assassin. Character assassination is at once easier and surer than physical assault, and it involves far less risk for the assassin. It leaves him free to commit the same deed over and over again, and may, indeed, win him honors of a hero even on the country of his victims. God help us if the church is made up of such people who call upon the Name of the Lord with the same lips that destroy another brother or sister in Christ. As we reflect on ourselves, we must have an honest heart to examine our lips and speech to see that we are not guilty of destroying, or encouraging the sin of misusing our tongues. The Bible is directing us to restrain our speech. A wise person controls their tongue; what they say and how they say it. The Bible goes on to say that people who spread gossip have malicious intentions as much as the people who start the gossip in the first place. This malice leads to the destruction of property and persons, just as bad as a fire would destroy a home or a church. The important truth we must learn is the church is not a building, but the people of God who just use the building to meet in. Remember this important truth; when our focus is to be mean to each other and find fault with each other, all we accomplish is the shooting of ourselves. How many times have we not gossip of the church leaders ? Remember, church leaders aren't politicians elected to do the will of the people. They are called to do the will and work of God.If the church leaders do not provide authoritative leadership, the church ministry can be undermined.People need to sense that the pastoral team setting the vision for the church is both competent and confident. The responsibility of church members to their leaders is to “know” and submit to their authority.Believers are to hold leaders in high regard because of their work. The ministry is a high and holy work and believers are called to place proper value on their leaders-esteem them for their work’s sake. The church body is to submit to leadership for their own spiritual welfare. When a church does not adequately care for the material needs of the pastor and his family his freedom to minister most effectively is hindered.Instead of passing irrelevant news of the church leadership, church members should support and obey the decision made.God’s people must love God and their leaders.Church members must remember their leaders.Believers are to constantly call their leaders to mind. One of the best ways to fulfill this command is through prayer. Paul pleads with the believers at Thessalonica, “Pray for us” (1 Thess 5:25). Perhaps there is no greater way for church members to love their leaders and remember them than to keep them before God’s throne of grace so that they may receive grace and mercy for their every need. Believers need to remember their leaders by means of encouraging words and expressions of appreciation for their ministry. In my experience there is nothing a child of the devil hates more than a child of God. If you are a faithful Christian you can expect people to come against you, even other Christians. But God is on the side of the faithful and true and not on the side of those who cause division and destruction. So take comfort in His grace, for He will be with you and they will get what is coming in the end. How many people have left active service to Christ because of unfounded charges and allegations made and received by others? Our duty is to obey and pray for godly church leaders. If we have complained or maligned our church leaders, let us come to God in repentance. Let us seek not to be guilty ourselves. Let us not sanction those who do it. No, you’re not perfect. But neither am I. And by the grace of God, we’re getting better because of the work Christ is doing in us through the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit.May God's grace bring light to the sin we so often commit that destroys one's life. Let us speak words of encouragement that brings healing and hope. Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.
