I was aware that this happens, especially on a long walk around outdoors in the cold, but never seen it so well illustrated. Nice one.

That makes a lot of sense now. I took my hw100 out shooting in the cold the other day and it was shooting low. And got lower and lower the longer I was out. I will do some more testing now and see what results I get. Cheers for that my friend 👍🏕🔥🇬🇧

Confirmation shown, just going by whats shown on video, did that first shot after you swapped cylinder already had warm air in from previous cylinder? You didnt show if you purged the air for a shot or 2 to acclimatise the regulator before the 3 degree shots. Great video 👍

Great video that explains some strange fluctuations with the air pressure in my Lyra recently. I thought it was leaking air, but on some occasions I'd check it to find that the pressure had climbed rather than dropped. Cheers 👍

Good Demonstration... Cold air is denser and heavier, that is why Ballistic Calculators, and some Scopes have a place for Temperature, to compensate for it. Then there is Humidity, Humid(Damp) Air is denser, again why Ballistic Calculators, and some Scopes have a place for Humidity, to compensate for it.

Myself and some club members understood that the cold and heat affects the pressure in pcp's so we waited until the summer around 27'o celcius left the rifles for an hour or so in direct sunlight.Oh boy be very careful every single one of them tested on the chrono in that heat was over 12 ftlb and i mean way over the legal uk limit,so in a nutshell a 11.5 ftlb shooting .177cal 10.34 grain pellets in winter is fine,but in summer time you could end up in deep trouble if caught.Keep up the good work.

@@dconner13 Thank you for your comment. I only really shoot in either very early mornings or late at night so I generally avoid the hottest part of the day but that said I'm looking at investing in a decent springer for the coldest and hottest times of year. 👍🇬🇧👍

barrel at room temp on first set. barrel cooler on second set, due to being outside? pellets at room temp on first one? pellets colder due to being outside on second one? Different cylinder type used on second set(rat works aluminum, what is HW orginal made of?) Like george also says below maybe try with a chrono, cold air is going to increase pellet drop over range due to thermal current, when its warmer the warm air rises so must how ever small decrease drop. There seems to be a lot more things that could effect the drop.

Just subbed mate, cool channel. Thinking of grabbing a HW30 or 99 for target and plinking fun. Does air temp affect springers?
@OutdoorsBritain5 күн бұрын
Thank you for your comment, if you're interested in the HW30 then check out the video I did on one if you haven't already, the HW30 is a junior sized rifle and produces less power, the HW99 is an adult size rifle and produces around 11.5ft/lb of power. Thank you for subscribing, as for cold temperatures affecting springers if it does then I wouldn't have thought it would be by as much as it does PCPs. 👍🇬🇧👍

I am guessing that the first shot from the cold cylinder was not as low as the rest because the reg had already replenished itself from the warm cylinder before yo fitted the cold cylinder ?
@OutdoorsBritain5 күн бұрын
@@eskimojulie Thank you for your comment, I'm pretty sure the first shot from the cold cylinder was a flyer, the air in the regulator on the HW100 drains out instantly when the cylinder is removed and when I put the cold cylinder on I dry fired it a few times just to make sure too. 👍🇬🇧👍

I’ve similarly known PCPs increase in power in a hot sunny summers day, by up to 2 ft/lbs when set up on a cold day , reg/hammer spring etc . Not many folks realise this.

A little more than a 2 MOA drop at (was it 20 meters?). The first one went high because the air in the regulator/metering system was still warm. I didn't hear you clear the first shot. The gun itself being cold on the night would also have had an effect, so It's a shame you didn't leave the entire rifle outside to cool down. I'm thinking the reason is the same as the reason for the speed of sound in air being higher at higher temperatures. Heat is energy so higher temperatures result in higher velocities. It's counter intuitive because cold air being denser, you'd think it would result in higher velocity for both but it does not. I'd like to see it replicated with other designs of PCP to confirm that it's not something specific with the mechanics however. Maybe something like a Gamo Coyote which uses a balanced cylinder system rather than a conventional regulator. (It's an excellent engineering solution which is not inferior to a regulator, just different) The more you learn...

@@Chris_the_Muso Thank you for your comment, the air immediately drains out of the HW100 regulator when the cylinder is removed also I dry fired the rifle a few times when I put the cold cylinder on. It would be better to leave the full rifle with the same cylinder ...do your room temp group and then get the full rifle down to the outdoor temp and use a thermometer direct on the cylinder...would be even better if you could get the outdoor temp a bit lower that 3

It is not the pressure that causes the drop in power in a regulated gun as the reg pressure remains the same, it is a drop in the volume of air when released. Just being a Nerd.😜😜😜
