Just found your channel from the OM617/OM6XX Swaps FB group. I just subscribed and watched a couple of you older vids. Good stuff. Cant wait to follow along on the JKU swap. I have an 07JKU and I'm looking to solve my 3.8 problem as well. I wanted to say thank you for all the little details you discuss on the 617 and the various options. This is a great video, thanks! ON EXHAUST STUDS Heating is great, penetrating oil is great also but the real trick is using two nuts to remove the stud. vice grips are fine but i have struggled much more with vice grips than with the two nut method. If it isn't obvious to whoever is reading, you put one nut as far down as you can to avoid twisting the stud which could be brittle, then thread another nut onto the stud over it.... You know have a bolt when operating the lower nut. you can switch between lower and upper for threading a stud in or out... FWIW i have done this job on several on these 617 manifolds.

Nice job on the Turbo fitting. One question about the In line Pump. Do you happen to know if the Bosch inline pump was different for the Naturally aspirated engine and Turbo Variations? I have a NA OM617 from a UK model W123. I would like to upgrade it to a Turbo version. Will I need to replace or upgrade the Pump in anyway? BTW great video. Well explained. Thanks for sharing.👍🏽👊

@MrVictory13 thanks brother! Yes I believe the fuel pumps are different, the turbo version requires more fuel supply. You will likely have to upgrade

Hello I have a question I have a om617 I have swapped into a 16-foot boat I'm currently have it running quite well but I'm looking to upgrade to the 7.5 mm fuel pump and I was wondering if this hx30 turbo would be the best option for me. I was having slight issues pulling out a skier and I just need a little bit more push at the bottom end and overall more horsepower. So I need a moderately quick spooling turbo and I am planning on doing a intercooler. This video was quite helpful.

In my opinion, an xh30 is going to give you max power output. But something such as a holset HE221W will spool quickly and give better bottom end at the sacrifice of top end capability.

I usually use an ax15 transmission, I used to get the motor mounts from koch enterprises, but they are out of business. Doomsday diesel has them

i see the egr blockoff on your intake but what do you use to plug that exhaust port?

I just put a small block off plate in the place if the metal pipe and clamp it on. I believe you can buy a kit from doomsday

@protecsafes6642 yes, upgraded bosch injectors and bosch fuel pump. I didn't do it to this particular one, but I have removed the rack limiter one one before. I don't recommend it as you can have catastrophic failure due to over revving .

are you using the Jeep TJ tach? If so how did you do that?? mount magnets somewhere for the Jeep magnetic pick up to pull signal from orr?

I actually used an aftermarket tach from autometer. They bolt to your alternator

@normahalteman7253 to be honest, I haven't delt with the Rangers much. I do know if it's the m5r1 trans, they aren't very strong and i would recommend swapping something in its place to give better reliability

Heya! What inch studs would you recommend going intercooler route? With the one inch spacer. 2.50 inch studs?

Yes, 1 in spacer with 2.5 in studs will be perfect if your running am intercooler

Hello I just found your channel and subbed while looking for turbo info on my newly acquired low mile 1 owner 83 300sd. I currently have a 87 300d in great condition but I prefer the older body style mercedes. What turbo to you think is best for daily driver. Not looking for drastic mods just want to get a bit more power out of it and still be a good daily driver and geek engine longevity. And advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hey Robert! Thanks for the subcription. Honestly, the he221 is one of the best user-friendly turbo's for daily driving. But if you want a lot more power , it's definitely an hx30

Hi, nice build! I have an OM603a six-cilinder in my W126. I convert it to six-speed manual to make a autobahn-runner out of it --> low engine rpm at high speed. So I need a good spool at around 2500rpm. The HX30super has just 6cm2 turbine housing. Is it too small for my OM603? I'm preferring the HX35 but I am afraid it won't spool enough at 2500rpm... can you make any suggestions? Greetings, Marlon

Thanks! A 603 would still be a good fit for an hx30 super for sure. I would not be afraid to run an hx35 as well though. I spool at about 3k rims with a 617 with an hx35, I would think you would spool by 2500 with a 603 in my opinion

Any hp/torque numbers on an OM617 with that turbo setup, requisite fuel and an inter cooler? does the NA intake manifold flow better?

I have run an intercooler and it is a pretty noticeable power difference. I haven't run mine on a dyno yet, but plan to in the future. I don't think the n/a manifold flows better, however it works much better for hook up if your running an intercooler

@augustus5151 they are awesome engines.I sell one every once in a while, but I do not normally source them out for people. Shipping is a pain and expensive. The engines are getting more expensive and harder to come by with the popularity sky rocketing as well

@drmachinewerke1 i usually make my own. I bought several from mercedes 4x4 back in the day but he went out of business. They were bad about breaking to ,so just started making my own

Isn't the adaptar going to add dimensional restriction?

Its actually just a spacer, not an adapter per say. The openings on the spacer are the exact size as the flange on the turbo, so there are no air restrictions

I have seen a couple people who have done it. The only issues are, it's not an easy nor cheap swap, and it will wear it out very quickly. The turbo model has oil squirters, sodium filled valves, nitrogen hardened crank, and a better injection pump, all which the non turbo lack. You would also have to swap the exhaust and intake manifold to accept a turbo. You then have to make an oil feed line for the turbo, then find a way to make an oil return to the pan. Your much better off getting a factory turbo model, but I always say go for it if it's what you want to do, it is possible.

I used to pay right around 1k from benzforce. They stopped doing them for a while, not sure if they started back up, but I'm sure it's over 2k now with everyone else. MBZ parts offers m pumps , I believe they are a little over 2k

This is an engine I pulled from a 1983 mercedes 300sd. It's an om617 3.0 inline 5 cylinder turbo diesel

When running the hx30 at what rpm does it spool compared to the hx35 at 3k rpm?

I typically start to pick up descent boost at around 2200- 2400 rpm with an hx30

Are you running the OEM OM617 water pump, with the longer neck?

Yes I always use the factory water pumps, I don't recall the necks being really long though. Maybe stick out a few inches

@Steel-Gunner there is a pump from late 60's Mercedes that also fit, which are about 30mm/1.25" shorter. That's what I used on my swap but I had to rebuild the pulley with that shorter offset

No I use the Vaccum pumps for my brake boosters and shut off switches.

@@huzaifaahmed9109Beware of benzfarce, he does not do quality work. He farms the pumps out to a generic pump shop that does no tuning to them. He also sells chinese counterfeit turbos.

Yes always upgrade your fuel pump with a new quality Bosch . They are pricey but well worth it

It depends on what transmission you use and how much your sourced engine costs. I typically find om617's here in Ohio around $1200-$1500. Doomsday diesel usually costs around that for a transmission adapter kit. A safe assumption would probably be $3k - $4k
