Thanks again for the kind words Hyce! -36:15-- The fire temp went down because you put more coal in the firebox: In Derail Valley, adding coal makes the fire temporarily cool down, then heat back up once the coal starts burning. The effect is more pronounced if you add more coal at once.- Never mind, this is completely wrong: I must have misread the fire temp gauge. Adding coal does not negatively affect the fire temp. BTW the S282's superheat simulation means that the temperature of the steam in the cylinders is the same as the temperature of the firebox. So a hotter fire equals a more efficient engine, and the degree of superheat can be read with the fire temp gauge. (hmm, maybe I should make the rear cylinders of the duplex use cooler steam...) 41:26 it's Franklin type B2 valve gear. There are minor differences between Caprotti, Lentz, and Franklin, but they're pretty similar; the main difference is that Caprotti is Italian, Lentz is Austrian, and Franklin is American lol. So if you see an American engine with rotary valve gear, it's probably Franklin; if you see a British or European locomotive with rotary valve gear, it's probably Caprotti or Lentz.
@Hyce7778 ай бұрын
Cool to see they actual sim that. The steam temp matching fire temp.... well, that's a little silly but it gets the idea close to right. :D And thank you for clarifying the valve gear! :D
@themanformerlyknownascomme7778 ай бұрын
you should only consider haveing the rear cylinders use cooler steam if the duplex is compounding rather then being simple (ie, is the steam going from one set to the other? or are both drawing steam from the steam chest? if the former then maybe do it, if the latter then defiantly don't do it)
@satiric_8 ай бұрын
@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 the duplex is simple, but the steam has to go significantly further for the rear cylinders and might cool down a bit on the way.
@satiric_8 ай бұрын
Note that the steam goes to the rear cylinders by pipes that run outside the boiler, so on the duplex you can't rely on the boiler keeping all that steam super hot. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'll simulate it; seems like all it would do is make the rear engine use a little more steam for the same power, and the duplex already uses plenty of steam
@themanformerlyknownascomme7778 ай бұрын
@satiric_ still, it seems largely superficial so it's probably best not to bother with it.
@michaelimbesi23148 ай бұрын
Pro tip: with the duplex, you often don’t need the bar wide open to get moving, since as long as the engines aren’t synced up, there’ll usually be at least one cylinder getting steam at any given time. It’s also why it does fairly well on hills as long as it doesn’t break traction.

A day late, but: Regarding the sleep in the beginning, as long as you have the job cards in hand, they don't (shouldn't) despawn. You could travel the entire map doing jobs from other locations, but the job cards in hand should be persistent. In a similar vein, pretty sure cars from abandoned jobs (wrecked or just abandoned) are persistent once taken unless you actually throw the job book in the trash can. Throwing on the ground just returns to lost and found, but trash can will actually clear them. (Not entirely sure about wrecked cars, but I think they clear when the job is trashed.) If you really want to reroll the jobs given at a location, trashing every job on the table before leaving is a good way to make sure everything gets refreshed. (Note: DO NOT do this IRL.)

Warning: This comment ended up way, way longer than I was expecting. I just bought the game earlier today and have been having a lot of fun with it so far :) I've tried one silly switching thing so far, which was trying to put the back job of 3 in front of the 2 DE2s by doing something kind of like a dutch drop on the entrance to the Harbor because the front and back jobs both had to go to the E yard and the middle one had to go to the D yard. However, it went horribly wrong (as expected). I had the front section go to the right (towards the military area), and thought I had left the back part with enough speed to make it past, but apparently it just barely wasn't enough, and the back car stopped on the switch. So I decided to decouple the engines from the front section and move them around the triangle to pull them just a bit forwards to clear the switch, not realizing that the military yard has a gate that's closed without the license for it. So the front engine crashed into the gate at a decently high speed (luckily not derailing, just taking 50% damage), and there wasn't enough space on that side of the switch to be able to flip it to go around as I was planning, so I had both of my engines stuck, one partially damaged, completely blocked in by the other set of cars without an engine. I tried pushing them with the handcar, just in case it worked somehow, but the handcar can't push 450 tons of train, unsurprisingly. So I explored the harbor, and found a third DE2 after about 5 minutes of looking (it's really easy to get lost, I've learned). I was able to use that to get everything unstuck, then left it in the D yard just in case my second dutch drop attempt failed. Then I tried to dutch drop the D yard cars all the way from the main track to the yard while trying to kick the set of cars that was now in front of the engine into their track in the E yard. The first time I forgot the switch and everything ended up on the D yard track, but I was able to just reverse and try again. And it almost worked, but yet again I didn't give that set of cars enough speed, so they stopped halfway to the D yard. Luckily, I had that extra engine waiting for it! Yay for thinking ahead :) Putting the last two jobs on the E yard track went pretty smoothly after that, so I finally turned in the jobs, 15 minutes after the time bonus (it should've been easy, I barely had any licenses unlocked, so the time bonus was still very long). Somehow still made a profit though. And since then, I've been running very heavy trains with all three DE2s around the harbor and steel mill, including two in the rain that I was very close to getting stuck on the hill out of the harbor on. I managed to use all of the sand from full just to get to the steel mill from the harbor, but it just barely made it. I've had one derailment so far, and I still have no idea what happened, because just the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd to last cars, but not the very last one, derailed at the entrance to the harbor (apparently that place is dangerous). Except for the cars just behind those that were disconnected, which was another failed dutch drop attempt, that never even made it to the switch because they were going so slow they stopped at the bottom of the hill. The rest of that job went fine though, and I got the time bonus still somehow. I hope I got the terms I used in that comment correct... Anyway, I just felt like sharing my first experience with the game. I'll get back to watching the video now :)

26:16 - Well the little one is among others used to shove ICE 1s with (in their original setup) close to 800 tons of mass in the shop. So yes it does pack a punch ☺️ Should you be interested, I can translate the description of the notches from German Wikipedia (I'm not trained on the class, so I don't professionally know the details). It's an interesting nine notch setup with only 3, 6 and 9 suitable for constant use and they work by having different setups of parallel or serial motors **and** battery cells. Clever simple layout. 30:07 - Not that a whole lot of shunters would care, but in recent years it has been banned to wait between the buffers. Now you have to wait outside till contact is made and then climb in-between (and there you have the reason why so many don't care, obviously 😂) 33:40 - "Bad practice" as in "ripping the wheelset out its bearing bad practice", yes 😝 Though you can get away with it in modern electric traction since asynchronous three phase engines don't get stupid fast when spinning. 36:50 - So in short; you have to use pressure to get pressure 😄 Sounds counterintuitive at first glance, but obviously it makes sense with the draft. 43:50 - Oh I hate killer switches … there's one junction where you are allowed to run at 130 km/h through the switches in the diverging section. You can, too, it is safe - but after that I wouldn't recommend ordering a coffee from the restaurant coach as the train driver, you can assume both the gastro personnel and the conductor/guard bringing it to the loco will spit in it =P You really don't want to take it at more than 115 km/h unless you're empty stock. 1:02:00 - With all that slippery when wet business and sand and such; is my reasoning correct that under slippery conditions you might be better off with a high cutoff and low throttle, resulting in a lower peak force and thus lower chance of breaking loose from the static friction? Or is the whole steam expansion thing evening the resulting force out more than I think? 1:11:00 - You could always sleep on the couch in the station office next to you so it gets light again 😄 1:20:10 - That's the release times we work with over here 😄 45 to 60 seconds release time from a full service brake (! not from dumped) in the brake setting used in goods trains 😁 1:39:50 - That does look like a decent choo choo now 👍 1:45:30 - Yepp, really enjoyable episode 🥰

Yeah I suppose climbing in between isn't so much fun either. I see. 130 km/h through a switch must be a long switch! In my experience, higher cutoff and lower throttle is better in slick conditions. Likely for that reason.

@@Hyce777 Yes, but not as long as it should but the feels of it 😄 Though in seriousness I guess it's something with the gradient of curvature change that's wrong there and makes it so unpleasant. We have way faster turnovers, too, for 200 km/h in the diverging track, in France and Spain there are even some for 220.

Can you do a video explaining valve gears?

It's been on my list forever to do! Lol. I am trying to learn them better myself so I can really explain them on a deep level.

Obviously non operational but you can go in the cab. Lot of neat trains there. Even the Dwight D. Eisenhower A4 is there with some cabs. Loved going there

45:45 is why I always make sure to set my radio back to Switch mode after using it for something else. Not that it would have helped here.

1:07:59 I know it probably won’t work but could you use the handcar for shunting because you can summon that for free
