Obligatory Bri'ish correction: From Wiki: Bubble and squeak is a British dish made from cooked potatoes and cabbage, mixed together and fried. In the real world, it's basically the non-meat leftovers from Sunday Lunch all smashed together, extra potato added if necessary, reheated and served with the leftover gravy, watered down to make it stretch, plus whatever meat you happen to have handy.

Another little fun fact. Some coasters feature an electro magnetic that rolls along a powered strip on the lift hill that keeps the pawls raised to keep NIMBYs quiet. If the rate of speed slows, the electro magnet drops the pawls.

I've driven a traction engine, and it was a lot of fun. All you really need to do to drive them (provided your fireman is keeping the fire going enough) is make sure the clutch is engaged (Yes they have a clutch, it lets you spin the flywheel without moving the engine, and if you loop a belt over said flywheel, you can run a threshing machine or something), put the johnson bar in the corner, and open the throttle all the way. From there you only really need to worry about steering, and you need a ton of steering input to make the wheels turn remotely far. Their ride quality is also absolutely atrocious, and they're way to slow for their own good, the one I drove tops out at 2.4 mph, though apparently most British traction engines can do 5-6 mph.

I work with someone out of southern Michigan that has one of those massive chase ones and it can go about 10 mph but it's terrifying

The ffestiniog and maybe other railways in North Wales also had things called ratchet brakes used on gravity trains where the ratchet was used to set the amount of brake applied on the car using a handle a bit like a reverser/Johnson bar attached to the side of the waggon

Fun fact/expansion upon the Chaudron piece: Chaudron (because of it's former use as a volumetric measurement for them) is also British slang for very old fashion ore cars. For the record, a Chaudron's weight actually was somewhat subject to change over the years (because originally the railroads were taxed 'per Chauldron' and found a temporary loophole in it) but it comes out to 2.97 tons (5940lbs)
@MachRacer4 Жыл бұрын
There were a bunch of wagons known as Chauldrons in early railways in the UK. Accurascale makes some in OO Gauge.
@SkorjOlafsen Жыл бұрын
Oh, because they carried 1 chauldron of coal. Neat.
@themanformerlyknownascomme777 Жыл бұрын
Chauldron does kinda have the double meaning of referring to old fashion British ore cars (not nessisarly coal, but most commonly coal). Fun fact: back in the old days the railroads were taxed 'per Chauldron' and as a result a Chauldron grew from 1 ton flat to 2.97 tons before British authorities caught on.

Bubbles and squeak (south wales version because areas of the uk can't do stuff the same) is basically your Sunday roast veg left overs chopped up mixed and sort of mashed and you then spread it out and pack it in a frying pan 7/16" ish thick and fry till browned on both sided and then serve with left over meat and ketchup or brown sauce or cranberry

If anyone is wondering, "bubble and squeak" is basically whatever you have left over. It was created during extreme rationing in WW2 as a way to make maximum use of every bit of nutrition. In its modern form, it's usually made with potatoes and garden veg (carrots, peas, that sort of thing). Also, you forgot that most quintessential of British foods: fish and chips.

Some cog railway‘s don’t have an uphill brake so they have to add power to the motors first bevor releasing the brakes.
@JamesPattersonGeepfan Жыл бұрын
The modern stuff doesn't have this anymore as the rollback protection is handled by the computer now. Our new Hm4/4 units are setup to hold in place with the motors until both brake sets are released. If you somehow manage to move more than 20cm in the wrong direction, you get an emergency brake penalty. Swiss regulation book has a whole page on how it all should work if not using a mechanical system.

You folks ab-so-LOOT-ly don''t read enough classic literature! Samuel Pepys mentions coal by the chauldron in the famous Diary, sometimes to say that he's buying it in quantities of ten chauldrons (1661), other times (1667) to complain of the high price of 23 _s._ per chauldron. The weight of a chauldron of coal varied over time, from a ton to a ton and a half, because it was a measure by volume rather than by weight.

Haha. You critique the literacy of 1920s United States and joke that we had learned to spell by then but I would like offer food for thought. The U.S. Constitution and particularly the bill of rights was written in a manner that the average American could and should be able to read and understand. Take a perusal through this document and I think you will find the implication that the “average American”’ spelling and reading comprehension would have been excellent. Once upon a time at least. But in fairness the potato famine, war with Mexico, Louisiana purchase, California Gold rush, some other world changing events that I know I’m forgetting but Jesus look at what I already listed, it would be weirder if America didn’t take a hit to it’s spelling and reading comprehension. …of course that doesn’t excuse the people of today who pretend they can’t read the second amendment.
@catfish552 Жыл бұрын
The average American overall, or the average American who could vote and participate in political life at the time? Because those're two very different things.
@jeffreyhallam5517 Жыл бұрын
@@catfish552 Hmmm. Good point. That is two very different things. Land owners could vote due to the known stake in the nation and the Land deed filling the role of an Identification card. I feel I can generally stand by my words due to early America being a merchant society and placing an emphasis on contract comprehension and thorough maintenance of accounting ledgers. I say with certainty that early America was far better educated than it is given credit for. This is evident in every colonial American town that can still be visited today. Skilled metallurgist, carpenters, tool makers, sailors, ship wrights, paper makers, tannery operators, etc were common place. These are skilled labor industries and in early America they were the rule not the exception.
