Hi David. This past Spring I planted 3 of the IR hydrangeas. They grew rapidly but after heavy rain they would all flop to the ground. I had to cut off the pretty blooms to avoid this from happening. I hope after doing a hard prune coming Spring will promote stronger stems. They are super easy to grow.

Yes, we agree they are super easy to grow and very beautiful too. Sometimes when they are growing in rich conditions they make a lot of rank growth that can be thin and weak and results in flopping. To reduce this there's several things you can do..... First make sure they are out in full sun, grow them in average soil and do not over fertilize or give them automatic irrigation. In other words, grow them on the "hard" side. Also we've had some success, giving them a second trim when the new shoots get to near their final height, this sets the flowering date back a bit, but it also stimulates woodier stems and bushier side shoots that are not as prone to flopping over with the heavier heads. Then there's the old Victorian trick of inserting branches in amongst the emerging shoots as they grow. It takes a bit of guess work, getting the eventual height right, but once the branches are stuck in the ground, the shoots grow up through them to give them support during summer storms and if you get the height right, you don't really see the branches. Also, keep an eye out for more of David's videos because there's some newer selections coming that are naturally stockier and bushier and in a little while when we have the plants ready David will be featuring them and telling you all about them. Thanks for watching, posting your comments and your continued support. .

Thank you for the information! I would have never known to prune it next Spring! I’m right here NC near NC State and did not know someone from NC State developed this amazing plant! I bought my first one this year and it’s planted right in front of my limelight hydrangea.

I have a invincible Ruby and the flowers flop over when it blooms. Is there anything I can do to make the flower stems stronger?

You could try growing it a little "harder" - in other words cut back on any fertilizing (including nearby lawn fertilizing), automatic watering etc. (providing the plant is well established), and perhaps reduce the dept of any mulch you put around it. The trick is to reduce the nutrition and grow them a little drier, that way, the growth will be shorter and probably more stocky and sturdy. Another thing would be to try not pruning it back in spring, instead allowing it to grow up through the old previous years stems for extra support. They will look a bit unsightly at first in spring, but as the new growth develops they will be disguised - and of course you could just just remove the tips and old flower heads. Another thing we do in the nursery is that we give them a second trim! Prune them hard back (as normal in early spring) and then take them back by about half to a third when they grow out in late spring and early summer (but before they start forming flower buds). This will cause them to flower a few weeks later, but the plants will be shorter and bushier. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we are in the midst of the main planting season (spring through late Fall) try to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.

How long does the bloom last? Can we expect color from summer to fall in this variety?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 жыл бұрын
The flowers persist well (even often into winter). They fade to paler shades and become "papery" (which is why they last so well), but at least they extend the period of interest well into the latter parts of the year. Sometimes the garden centers that stock our plants: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ may have a few that remain unsold, so if you visit later in the year (which is a good idea anyway), you may be able to see them at that time of year for yourself.

I planted 3 of these in May of last year on the east side of my house. They bloomed in June of this year, but the color didn’t last long before fading to a lighter pink, and then the greenish color. I will cut them back in spring next year, but you’re saying I should also trim them after their first bloom cycle is done? This will cause them to rebloom?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 жыл бұрын
Cutting them back next spring will be great, that will stimulate plenty of strong growth and bigger and probably longer lasting flowers. Trimming off the old flower heads now in mid-summer will divert the energy that would be spent making seed heads into making the clumps stronger. Whether they rebloom or not remains to be seen. It may be (now) a little late in the season, I usually do it earlier (just as the color is fading to the greenish color you describe). At that point, the plants are still juvenile and growthy enough to kick into another round of flowering. You might consider, cutting one of the plants back harder as a little experiment and see what happens! if we get good growing conditions and a mild autumn there might be enough time for a second round. Don't forget to keep us posted, it is good to share information so that all of us can get better results.

@@OverdevestNurseries Thank you! I actually did cut all of the blooms off on one plant to see what would happen, and I’m just now getting one new bloom. It looks like it will be the only one I will get, and it’s going to be rather tiny. Thanks again!

Is there a hydrangea with color you’d recommend for zone 8 (DFW) in a north facing foundation garden (3-4’ tall)? It gets a lot of light from late afternoon to evening in the summer.
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
In your zone there's lots of possibilities, but selecting the ones that you'll be enjoying every day for (hopefully) many years is a very personal thing, so its worth taking your time and picking the ones that appeal to you most. This link will introduce you to over 60 types: studio.kzbin.info/door/gfi7rt7jLrh4Hg01wKScdwvideos/upload?filter=%5B%7B%22name%22%3A%22TITLE%22%2C%22value%22%3A%7B%22name%22%3A%22CONTAINS%22%2C%22value%22%3A%22Hydrangea%20%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22name%22%3A%22VISIBILITY%22%2C%22value%22%3A%5B%22PUBLIC%22%5D%7D%5D&sort=%7B%22columnType%22%3A%22date%22%2C%22sortOrder%22%3A%22DESCENDING%22%7D that we feature here on this channel. So, you could start off by taking a little time to see which ones "strike you fancy"! Then probably the best thing to do is visit your local garden centers (and some local parks and gardens) to view the plants in reality for yourself. Seeing and touching etc. them in your actual locality is a great way to narrow down your choices and at the same time get the benefit of local experts. We suspect your garden is probably outside of our normal shipping region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/, so unless you are planning to make a trip, these places may not be practical, however there should be plenty of highly regarded garden centers and nurseries in your area, and the best of them would be worth a visit and ongoing consultation. To help you a little more, here's a couple of possibilities from our line up that will get you started on your exciting selection process: Hydrangea Ruby Slippers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIevpqugap54apY Hydrangea Lets Dance Can Do: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWrQhJWeod55oac Hydrangea Zorro: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnu8mmCZftGoeMU Hydrangea Cherry Explosion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i52soayKo9Fpja8 And, that's just a few..... So, take your time pick the ones that you like best. Meanwhile, heave you thought about subscribing to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. I am looking for a pink hydrangea that gets 4ft tall and wide that has color interest from summer to fall..could u recommend one for foundation planting thats reliable and reblooming?

A lot of what we choose usually comes down to personal preference, which is why it is so good to be able to go along to one of the hundreds of garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ that carry our plants and see them for ourselves. Unlike the owners and garden designers that created the famous gardens of past eras. we today can view and compare the plants at their peak (and if some of them are still there, we may be even able to see them at different times of the growing season too), and then pick the ones that appeal most to our tastes. This one would probably do the trick for you but you might like to scroll through this link to our website: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Hydrangea (where we list over 100 other different types), and then when you visit the garden centers you may wish to consult with one of the experts there to make your final selections.
